Introduction
This unit is called Measuring Matters. This unit is comprised of thirteen different
lessons that help students understand the basic concepts of measurement. We will
use different measurement tools such as, measuring tapes, metric rulers, meter
sticks, measuring cups, graduated cylinders, and a balance. There will be a lot of
group work and partner work throughout this unit as there are several experiments.
We will also do whole group work where the teacher models and students
participate. For each lesson there are activity sheets that will help aid students
understanding in measuring matters.

Standards
P.PM.02.12- Describe objects and substances according to their properties (color,
size, shape, texture, hardness, liquid or solid, sinking, or floating).
P.PM.02.13- Measure the length objects using rulers (centimeters) and meter sticks
(meters).
P.PM.02.14- Measure the volume of liquids using common measuring tools
(measuring cups, measuring spoons.)
P.PM.02.15- Compare objects using a balance.
S.IP.02.11- Inquiry involves generating questions, conducting investigations, and
developing solutions to problems through reasoning and observation.
S.IP.02.12- Generate questions based on observations.
S.IP.02.13- Plan and conduct simple investigations.
S.IP.02.14- Manipulate simple tools (ruler, meter stick, measuring cups, hand lens,
thermometer, balance) that aid observation and data collection.
S.IP.02.15- Make accurate measurements with appropriate units (meter,
centimeter) for the measurement tool.
S.IP.02.16- Construct simple charts and graphs from data and observations.
S.IA.02.12- Share ideas about science through purposeful conversation.
S.IA.02.13- Communicate and present findings of observations.
S.IA.02.14- Develop strategies and skills for information gathering and problem
solving (books, internet, ask an expert, observation, investigation, technology tools.)
S.RS.02.11- Demonstrate scientific concepts through various illustrations,
performances, models, exhibits, and activities.
S.RS.02.13- Recognize that when a science investigation is done the same way it
was done before, similar results are expected.
S.RS.02.15- Use evidence when communicating scientific ideas.

Goals
The learner will appreciate that objects and substances can be described according
to their properties.
The learner will understand that objects and substances are measured using length,
volume, and mass.
The learner will discover that objects and substances are classified as single
substances and mixtures.
II
Objectives
I can manipulate simple measuring devices to collect data.
I can accurately measure length, volume, and mass using the appropriate measuring
tool and unit.
I can compare the mass of different objects using a balance.
I can measure distance and time traveled down a ramp.
I can use evidence when communicating scientific ideas.
I can make modification to designs of a paper airplane to increase distance traveled.
I can construct a simple chart from data collected.
I can measure width and length.
I can measure volume of solids and liquids and liquids using measuring spoons and
measuring cups.
I can classify objects as single substances or mixtures.
I can make mixtures by combining single substances.
I can describe properties of different substances.
I can separate simple mixtures using filtration and evaporation.

Accommodations/Learning Styles
Throughout this unit there are extensions and remediations for every lesson. Most
of the extensions require the students to do extra measuring of some sort outside of
school, and share the next day with the class. The remediations consist of students
getting extra assistance and shortened requirements if they are struggling with a
particular lesson. Its important to have differentiation for all students because some
students may need something a little more challenging, and some students may
need something less challenging. Its important to introduce many different learning
styles while teaching whole group; because each student has their own specific
learning style in which they learn best. In this unit we will tap into hands on
learning, visual and kinesthetic, as well as others to help students learn the material
being presented to them.

Hands-On Learning
Throughout this unit plan there is a lot of hands-on learning. Almost every science
lesson has a hands-on learning activity for the students to do. There are different
experiments where students will measure the length of their bodies, objects, and the
length an object travels.

Subject Integration
Throughout this unit there is subject integration of a couple subjects. The first is
reading. Some of the lessons require the use of reading a book to the students to
help increase understanding of whats going on in the lesson. Since this unit is
measuring matters, there is a lot of mathematics involved as well.

Global/Multicultural
This unit doesnt offer many global and multicultural aspects. However, all students
need to be able to measure objects and substances. Also, throughout other countries
there are different standards of measurement. Students will understand that we use
standard measurements so that when we measure something its the same for
everyone in our country. Students will also understand that other places around the
world have different standards of measurement that are different than ours.

Technology
IV
Measuring Matters is a very hands on unit without much technology. However, there
will be videos shown on measurement, as well as demonstration using the elmo and
smart board.

Affective Domain
I will make sure my students needs are being met by keeping them engaged
throughout the lessons. I will also make sure to keep my students safe by explaining
clear expectations of what is being expected of them. By making sure that students
understand expectations and by setting up a safe learning environment, my students
will comfortable with the tasks at hand that are given to them.

Classroom Set Up
For this unit, the teacher will want their classroom to have a lot of open space. The
teacher can even set up different stations throughout the room so that students
have room to conduct their experiments. For some of the experiments the teacher
will need to have the gym, cafeteria, or some large space reserved for a little while.
Some of the lessons will consist of the teacher teaching/modeling the entire lesson;
however, there will be plenty of student participation involved.

Formative/Summative Assessment
This unit offers several formative assessments, and one summative assessment. At
the beginning of the unit, students will take the pre-assessment. At the end of the
unit the students will take the post-assessment, which is the same as the pre-
assessment. Each lesson has an activity sheet that students will turn in for the
teacher to check and monitor progress. There will also be formative assessment
with exit cards. The students will receive an anticipatory set with the fayer model to
demonstrate the understanding of what centimeters are.
