Chapter 2

The Basic Concepts of Backup (Backup)

This chapter explains the concepts and terms you need to know before using
Samsung Auto Backup.

What is Backing up?

Backup means storing data safely on storage devices such as hard
disks.

Backup Source (Source) and Backup Device (Destination)

Backup source (Source) is the files or folders that you want to backup.
Backup device (Destination) is the device (local hard disks, NAS, DVD-
RAM, etc) on which you want to store the backup data.

Scheduled (Scheduling) Backup and Manual (Manual) Backup

In the scheduled (Scheduling) backup, the software program runs the
backup procedure according to a schedule you set in advance. In the
manual (Manual) backup, you perform the backup procedure yourself
using the software.

Full Backup (Full Backup)

All the files and folders in a backup source you specify are backed up.

Incremental Backup (Incremental Backup)

When you back up data from the same source repeatedly, only data
that has changed or been added since the last backup is backed up.

Real-Time Backup (Real-Time Backup)

This backup procedure is performed in real time. That is, the backup
source is monitored continuously, and when a folder or file is changed
or added to it, the corresponding folder or file is backed up in real time.

Backup Log (Backup Log)

[4]
This log contains detailed information on the backup process, including
the start time, completion time, number of files backed up etc.

Samsung Auto Backup Installation

Before installation
System specifications for Samsung Auto Backup
How to install Samsung Auto Backup

1. Before installation
Samsung Auto Backup is a backup solution (Backup Solution) that allows
you to back up important data locally or through a network. This solution
provides various options that allow you to perform manual backups as
well as scheduled backups, and compress the data during the process.

When you back up data using Samsung Auto Backup, you first need to
perform a full backup (Full Backup) to back up all your data. After that,
however, you can perform real-time backups (Real-Time Backup) that
monitor the backup source and back up only those data that are changed.
Also, this solution uses a disk-based backup method. Therefore, you can
cut down the time required to restore (Restore) the backup data
significantly.

In addition, this solution increases the backup process’s speed

significantly by supporting Incremental Backups (Incremental Backup)
which back up only data that has changed or been added since the last
backup. Also, you can use removable disks more efficiently as you can
use the same backup and restoration procedures on them, even if they
are assigned different drive letters each time they are connected to the
computer.

[6]
We recommend that you check the current condition of your system and
take any necessary measures to optimize it before using this software. If
you haven’t optimized your system for a long time by deleting
unnecessary files or running ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter, you may
want to do so before using the software.

If your system is unstable, for example if it displays blue screens or error

message while booting the system, or crashes frequently in everyday use,
you must resolve these problems before using this software. If you think
your system is stable, optimize it anyway by deleting unnecessary files,
and running ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter before using this software.

[25]
※ What is Backup Information?
‘Backup Information’ is actually a database of important information on
your backups, such as which data Samsung Auto Backup backed up
and the result of the process. Based on this database, the program
performs its tasks such as backing up, restoring and deleting.

※ Why do I need to store the backup information?

If the backup information is lost in part or in whole, you cannot restore
the backup files using Samsung Auto Backup. Also, it becomes
impossible to perform further backups as important data such as task
details are lost. Therefore you need to save a copy of the backup
information in a secure location and try to keep it very safe.

※ What is ‘compression’ of Backup Information?

When a user deletes data such as a backup file and task log in
Samsung Auto Backup, the actual files are deleted. However, the
information related to the deleted files is only flagged as ‘deleted’ but
actually still remains within the backup information. Therefore, if there
are too many deleted files, the program has to check through lots of
information when performing the next backup, and so the backup
process is slowed down. Also, the size of the backup information file is
itself limited. When the backup information file reaches a certain size,
backups cannot be performed anymore. To resolve these problems, the
compression function removes useless data from the backup
information and optimizes it.

[26]
3. Icon Bar
The icon bar of Samsung Auto Backup shows icons for frequently used
functions for your convenience.

you will need to enter it when you start the program.

[Fig.] Setting the Backup Mode

E. You can set Normal/Scheduled Mode or Real-Time Auto Run Mode in

the “Set Backup Mode” menu.

Normal/Scheduled Mode
In this mode, all source files are analyzed at the time of backup
and those files that were added or modified subsequent to the
last backup are backed up.

Real-Time Auto Run Mode

This mode doesn’t analyze all the source files at the time of
backup. Instead, it monitors the source files in real time (Real-
Time Monitoring) and backs up those files that are added or
modified.
[49]
12. Setting the Backup Device
Setting the backup device covers three different processes: Changing the
backup device, replicating the backup device, and recovering the backup
information.

A. Changing the Backup Device

You may need to change the backup device for various reasons, for
example, if you want to use a different Samsung external hard disc than
original one.

※ On the backup destination screen, you can only choose the

Samsung external hard disk that is connected. If the Samsung
external hard disk is not connected, you cannot choose the backup
destination.

If you select the “Change backup device” option, the Backup Settings
Wizard that appeared when you ran the program for the first time is
displayed again. In the Backup Settings Wizard, you can change the
backup device and other options.

[Fig.] Changing the Backup Device

[50]
Note
If the new backup device you specified was used as a backup device
before and contains previous backup data, a list of the users who used
it is displayed. You can continue to use the previous backup data by
selecting an entry from this list. Or you can configure a new backup
environment.
If unauthorized persons used the previous backup data, the backup
information in the data may have been revealed to them. Set a
password to prevent further unauthorized access if several people are
using the same backup device.

B. Replicating the Backup Device

You can replicate the current backup device to a different backup location.
If you select the “Replicate backup device” option, the following Wizard
appears.
※ From the “Replicate Backup Device” screen, you can only choose
the Samsung external hard disk that is connected. If the Samsung
external hard disk is not connected, you cannot choose the backup
destination.

[Fig.] Replicating the Backup Device

[51]
From the “Replicate Backup Device” screen, select the location of the
backup device onto which the backup data will be replicated and click
“Next” to navigate to the “Options for Backup Device Replication” screen.

There are two kinds of backup device replication. One is "Replicate

backup information” which replicates only the current backup
information and options. The other is “Replicate backup device”
which replicates the current backup information, options and
backup files.

When you choose “Replicate backup device”, you can select the following
options.
- Use the replicated device as the new backup device
This option uses the device onto which the backup device is being
replicated as the new default backup device.

- Delete the previous backup device

This option deletes the previous backup device after replication is
complete. This option is activated only when you select the “Use
the replicated device as the new backup device” option.

[52]
[Fig.] Options for Backup Device Replication

C. Restoring the Backup Information

This process restores backup information that was stored in another
location. The backup information is reverted to the time when the backup
information was stored. Existing backup information is then deleted.
Therefore, after restoration of backup information, you should carry out an
Integrity Check to match the backup information with the files stored on
the backup device.

For more details about the integrity of the backed up data, refer to “(15)
Checking the Integrity of Backup Data”.

[53]
13. Using Migration (Migration)

Migration is different from backup as it precisely copies the folder structure

and files from the source drive to another drive.
Samsung Auto Backup creates a new folder with a name composed of the
user account name and the computer name, and stores the files in this new
folder. But migration maintains the same folder structure. Therefore, you can
use this function when you want to replicate the folder structure of one
computer in another computer.

To use the migration function, you need to select the toggle button beside
the title of the Backup Source window to switch to migration mode.

[Fig.] Switching to the Migration Mode

A. Select a source to migrate.

Select the folders or files to migrate in the source selection window.

[54]
[Fig.] Selecting the Migration Source

B. Select “Tools” -> “Migration” in the menu bar.

[Fig.] Migration Settings Screen

[55]
C. Once you select a drive to migrate in the “Source Disk” pane and click
the arrow button, the drive is mapped (Mapping) to the “Destination
Disk” pane. Now click “Start” to begin the migration.

The migration engine shows the progress of the migration process. After
completion of the migration, you can see a list of the migrated files in the
View Details window.

[Fig.] Migration Completion Screen

[56]
If you select personalized information items (Desktop, My Documents,
Favorites etc) as the migration source, or select personalized information in
the Migrations Settings window, you can migrate the personal information to
a specific folder on another computer, as shown below.

[Fig.] Migrating Personal Information

[57]
14. Connecting to a Network Folder
When the backup source is another computer on a network, you can use the
“Connect to the network folder” function to add the source to the Source
Selection window.

You can select either Network Folder Shortcut or Network Drive as the
“Connection Type”.
“Network Drive” assigns a drive letter to the network folder to connect the
corresponding folder to the computer. “Network Folder Shortcut” creates a
network folder in My Network Neighborhood instead of assigning a drive
letter.

[Fig.] Connecting to the Network Folder

When the network folder is connected it appears in the backup source tree.

[58]
15. Checking the Integrity (Integrity) of Backed up Data
As the basic backup units of Samsung Auto Backup are the file and folder,
you can use Windows Explorer to access the files and folders within the
backup data. Therefore, it is possible that you may accidentally change or
delete files and folders on the backup device using Windows Explorer.

If you change the folders or files in the backup device manually, there can
be discrepancies between Samsung Auto Backup ‘s backup information and
the backup files stored on the backup device. As a result, the backed up
data will become unreliable, and Samsung Auto Backup won’t be able to
restore it.

The Backup Data Integrity Check tool solves this problem. This tool checks
whether the backup information of Samsung Auto Backup is the same as the
backup data stored on the backup device, and corrects any discrepancy to
match the backup files with the backup information.
This tool checks whether the backup information of Samsung Auto Backup
is the same as the backup data stored on the backup device, and corrects
any discrepancies that are found. By using this tool, you can prevent any
potential errors that can occur while using Samsung Auto Backup, and keep
your backup information synchronized with the actual backed up data.

Ú The best way to maintain synchronization is not to change the

backup files stored on the backup device in the first place.
Also, one of the most important factors to Integrity Checks is the
time information of the computer. If the time zone of the computer
changes after a backup was last performed, the Integrity Check tool

A. Select the backup source and click the “Backup” button on the icon
bar.

Q. When I open a backed up file on the backup device, a message is

displayed saying the file format is incorrect, or a jumbled file is
displayed.

A. The “Compress files” option has been checked in the Backup

Settings. The files were backed up using compression. Therefore,
the files on the backup device have been compressed/password-
protected. Accordingly, when you open the compressed/password-
protected file, a message appears saying that the file has an error or
the file format is incorrect. To open a compressed/password-
protected file, first you need to restore the file using Samsung Auto
Backup.
[66]
For details about how to restore files, refer to “Restoring Backed up
Data” in the “Using Samsung Auto Backup” section.

Q. Can I specify more than one destinations as Backup Device and

back up the data to these destinations at the same time?

A. Samsung Auto Backup does not support simultaneous backup to

multiple backup devices.

Q. I selected the “Compress files during backup” option and performed

a backup. However, only selected files are compressed instead of all
files.

A. Check if some files in the backup source were already backed up.
Only files backed up after setting the “Compress” option are
compressed. Therefore, the backup data may contain both
compressed files as well as uncompressed files.

Q. I’d like to change the backup device. What should I do?

A. Select “Change backup device” from the “Backup device” submenu

of the “Setup” menu, and specify the new backup device.

Q. I formatted the computer and reinstalled Windows. How can I

A. First, you need to reinstall Samsung Auto Backup. Then, run

Samsung Auto Backup and select the device that contains the
backed up data as the backup device. By doing so, you should be
able to use the backup data as before.
[67]
Q. Can I connect the Samsung external hard disc containing the
backup data to other computers and restore the data? What should I
do?

A. Connect the Samsung external hard disc to the computer, and install
Samsung Auto Backup. Then run Samsung Auto Backup and select
the backup folder of the Samsung external hard disc as the backup
destination. In this way you should be able to use and restore the
backup data.

Q. How do I set a scheduled backup?

A. There are two different ways to perform scheduled backups.

Select “Backup Schedule” in the “Settings Information” window in the
lower part of the Samsung Auto Backup window and add a new
backup schedule.
You can also add your backup schedule in the “Set Schedule”
window of the "Set task options” menu.

Q. How do I check the results of a backup, restore, or delete operation?

A. After the backup, restore, or delete operation completes, you can

check its results in the task log under “Settings Information” in the
lower part of the Samsung Auto Backup window.

Q. I selected the C drive as the backup source. But the backup has
failed and the backup log indicates that the program has failed to
back up several files.

[68]
A. System files in the Windows operating system cannot be
accessed for backup. Therefore, these files are not backed up.

Q. I installed and backed up an application. After deleting the

application due to a problem, I restored the application from the
backup file. But I cannot run the application for some reason. What’s
the problem?

A. Every application has a specific environment for it to be executed in.

Samsung Auto Backup is a program that backs up data files.
Accordingly, though the files of the application were backed up, the
environment for running the application was not backed up. This is
why you can’t run the application.
