Example - Reflective Practice: Learning from Doing

Describe a recent experience in clinical practice

One of my most recent experiences in clinical practice was learning how to perform different
kind of percussions. I learned why it is performed and some variations on how to practice the
treatment.

What did you do…

I performed the following percussions: …and why?
-Pincement These techniques are used to either
-Tapping sedate or awaken a client. When used
-Hacking under a minute, a client will feel
-Slapping stimulated. This is commonly used when
-Clapping/ Cupping a client is about to go for a run. When
-Beating/ Rapping used over a minute, the client will
-Pounding become sedated. This is commonly used
to relax a client.

What went well…? …and what could have been better?

I understood how the technique was I sometime can be uncertain about the
performed and how to apply the right right pressure to use, so I was using
amount of pressure lighter pressure than usual.

What (if anything) would you now do differently?

If I was to do anything different, I would have asked the instructor to demonstrate the
appropriate pressure on me.

Describe what you learnt from this experience? (Learning outcomes)

From this experience, I learned that it is extremely important to ask when you need help with
a certain aspect of massage technique.
