V. IDENTIFIKASI

A. Sasaran Pembelajaran
1. Agar mahasiswa mampu memahami dan menjelaskan cara-cara
melakukan identifikasi ikan berdasarkan data morfometrik dan meristik.
2. Agar mahasiswa mampu memahami dan menjelaskan cara-cara menyusun
kunci identifikasi.
3. Agar mahasiswa mampu memahami dan menjelaskan cara-cara menyusun
hirarki dari kategori-kategori taksonomi.

B. Identifikasi
Identifikasi adalah tugas untuk mencari dan mengenal ciri-ciri taksonomik
individu yang beraneka ragam dan memasukkannya ke dalam suatu takson.
Pengertian identifikasi berbeda sekali dengan pengertian klasifikasi. Identifikasi
berkaitan erat dengan ciri-ciri taksonomik dan akan menuntun sebuah sampel ke
dalam suatu urutan kunci identifikasi, sedangkan klasifikasi berhubungan dengan
upaya mengevaluasi sejumlah besar ciri-ciri. Menurut Mayr dan Ashlock (1991),
klasifikasi merupakan penataan hewan-hewan ke dalam kelompok-kelompok
berdasarkan kesamaan dan hubungan di antara mereka. Ditinjau dari segi ilmiah,
identifikasi sangat penting artinya karena seluruh urutan pekerjaan selanjutnya
tergantung kepada hasil identifikasi yang benar dari suatu sampel yang sedang
diteliti.
Pada saat melakukan identifikasi ikan-ikan yang berasal dari perairan di
Indonesia, diperlukan bantuan buku-buku identifikasi. Beberapa buku kunci
identifikasi yang dapat digunakan antara lain adalah:

Pada buku-buku identifikasi tampak bahwa pada setiap nomor terdapat dua
sampai empat pilihan yang berbeda. Kita harus memilih salah satu pilihan sesuai
dengan ciri-ciri yang terdapat pada sampel ikan yang kita amati. Jika pilihan
pertama sesuai dengan ciri-ciri yang terdapat pada sampel tersebut maka kita
dapat meneruskan sesuai dengan nomor yang berada di sebelah kanan pilihan
tersebut. Sebaliknya, jika pilihan pertama tidak sesuai maka kita harus mengambil
pilihan kedua, ketiga, atau keempat. Pada nomor ini kita juga dapat meneruskan
sesuai dengan nomor yang berada di sebelah kanan.
Salah satu contoh dalam menggunakan buku kunci identifikasi, berikut di
bawah ini diberikan langkah-langkah yang harus dilakukan untuk mengidentifikasi
ikan opudi, salah satu ikan endemik yang terdapat di Danau Matano, Sulawesi
Selatan. Langkah-langkah identifikasi ini berdasarkan buku identifikasi Saanin
(1984).

Huruf-huruf yang tercantum sesudah nomor-nomor di sebelah kiri masing-
masing menunjukkan pilihan yang tercantum pada nomor-nomor tersebut. Huruf a
menunjukkan pilihan pertama, huruf b untuk pilihan kedua, huruf c untuk pilihan
ketiga, dan huruf d untuk pilihan keempat.
Berdasarkan langkah-langkah yang telah dilakukan di atas, maka kunci
identifikasi ikan opudi berdasarkan buku identifikasi Saanin (1984) adalah:

Setelah memperoleh kunci identifikasi maka selanjutnya dapat disusun
hirarki dari kategori-kategori taksonomi. Hirarki ini pertama kali dicetuskan oleh
Carolus Linnaeus dan hanya meliputi lima kategori dalam dunia hewan, yaitu:
kelas, ordo, genus, spesies, dan varietas (Mayr dan Ashlock 1991). Jika
menggunakan kunci identifikasi sebagaimana tersebut di atas, maka kategori
taksonomi ikan opudi adalah sebagai berikut:

Pada bidang iktiologi, nama ordo mempunyai akhiran formes, subordo
dengan idei, superfamili dengan oidea, famili dengan idea, subfamili dengan
kata inae, dan suku atau tribe dengan kata ini. Pengertian varietas, subspesies
(anak jenis), dan spesies (jenis) dapat dilihat pada Glosarium.

C. Catatan
Untuk melakukan identifikasi, terlebih dahulu harus disiapkan buku-buku
kunci identifikasi. Buku kunci identifikasi yang sering digunakan di Indonesia
adalah buku-buku identifikasi yang disusun oleh Saanin dan buku-buku yang
disusun oleh Weber dan de Beaufort sebagaimana yang telah disebutkan
sebelumnya. Selain itu, saat ini sangat banyak buku-buku identifikasi yang
dikeluarkan oleh FAO berdasarkan kelompok ikan-ikan tertentu. Salah satu contoh
buku tersebut adalah tentang ikan merah yang tertulis dalam buku FAO Species
Catalogue Volume 6 (Allen, 1985).

D. Soal-soal Latihan
Setelah membaca materi di atas, bentuklah kelompok diskusi (5 orang per
kelompok). Di dalam laboratorium, setiap kelompok menentukan kunci identifikasi
dan kategori taksonomi ikan lundu (Arius maculatus Thunberg, 1792) dengan
menggunakan buku Saanin (1968). Presentasikan hasil masing-masing kelompok.
