Dear Coco,

We are learning about the six genres or types of writing. In descriptive writing, you use your five senses
to describe your topic. We wrote telling paragraphs and five senses poems about the Thanksgiving
Feast at school. Expository writers are like scientists and detectives they write about the facts. We
wrote an All About America book and instructions on how to bake apple pie! Yum! In narrative writing,
you have a beginning, middle, and end to your stories. You also need characters and a plot. We wrote a
fairy tale about Princess Rio and Tex, the armadillo who rescues her. In persuasive writing, you try to
convince your readers to do something or believe in something. We wrote a letter to Principal Snyder,
telling him why every classroom should have a writing center. He agreed to make sure every classroom
has one next year! Poetry writers paint pictures with words. We wrote all kinds of poems: cinquains,
acrostics, Haiku, poems that rhyme, and poems that didnt rhyme. Poetry writing is fun because you get
to be creative and use lots of brainpower! The last type of writing is called personal. Personal writing
includes letters, emails, and journals. We decided to write a class letter to you, Coco! What is your
favorite type of writing?
Write back soon!
Love,
Ms. Davis First Graders
