The Escape

Everything in the room screamed that she didnt belong there. The stairs seemed quite far
and crumbling fast. She and her mother were standing shoulder to shoulder, ready to run at
the slightest hint of escape. The air was a medley of blood, mould and fear. Their own voices
were blurred and they could hear only the rubble falling and the screams of the other
tenants. They began communicating with gestures over the noise.
Stay close to me! Everything will be fine Her mother yelled over the noise. Taking Gods
name, she grabbed her hand and led them through the sea of rubble and people. The sharp
bleating of a blast cut through the smoky air. The noise startled her and they jumped
looking for the source of the detonation. A man stood on a wooden chair, holding a gun in
one hand and a grenade in the other. He had a disapproving look in his eyes. He yelled over
the chaos and lifted his gun to aim at them.
Her heart pounded in her chest.
Flashback
She had worn her brand new pink cardigan and a pearl necklace this morning. She promised
her mother she will carry herself with poise when they went for dinner at the Taj. Little did
they know what was about to follow.
They were having a quiet dinner when it happened. The doorway exploded and the shooting
ensued. They scrambled to their feet and found a hiding place but not for long. Everything
around them fell to pieces.
Cut back to scene
She turned just in time to see the bullets pass by. Her mother turned too and for a moment
she thought she had dodged the blow, but the man drew close and grabbed hold of her
mothers arm and dragged her across the room. The girl reacted, and landed a solid punch
across the mans face. Blood sprayed her face and splattered down the front of her
cardigan. The man fell to the floor with a thud and for a moment the room was completely
silent.
