Location and General Information: Cajas
National Park is located on the Occidental
Mountain Range of the Ecuadorian South
Andes, only 35 kilometers from the city of
Cuenca toward the north east. Its altitude goes
from 3.156 to 4.450 meters above sea level.
Its extension is 288 km2 (28.544 hectares)
and includes the lake complex of 235 lakes of
glacial origin, connected with each other by
streams and brooks. Its temperature oscillates
between -2C and 18C. There are several
places of archeological interest in the park in
the area of Molleturo, where ruins exist that
possibly formed a Tambo (a place where Inca
messengers going from Cuzco to Quito rested).
Recommendations: To use the refuge you
need to take a sleeping bag. Its recommended
to have warm and waterproof clothing, sun
block, snacks, and beverages, and to visit with a
qualied guide. If you visit alone, you shouldnt
leave the set points (next to the road or in the
tourist recreational areas) and never leave the
paths.
Location and general information:
The Andean forest Aguarongo is located 30
kilometers to the east of Cuenca, between
2900 and 3320 meters above sea level. Its area
is 2086 hectares, and its climate is estimated
between 11, 5 and 12 Centigrade.
The Aguarongo forest is one of the few native
forests left in the Azuay province. Within it we
can nd ora and fauna characteristic of a low
mountainous humerus forest.
As a strategy to defend and preserve the life
of the communities, since 1995 the Ecological
Foundation Rikcharina and the Foundation
Ayuda en Accin Ecuador (Help in Action), have
worked together with the communities of the
area on recuperation and protection projects of
the natural resources found there, accompanied
by training activities and environmental
education aimed at children and adults.
The Centers facilities: The Environmental
Management Center Aguarongo has the
following services: lodging, food (this service
needs to be coordinated in advanced by calling
the ofces of the Foundation Rikcharina),
laboratory, auditorium, and interpretation paths.
Cost and recommendations: the entry
cost for Ecuadorians and foreigners is $2.00.
Children under 12 years old and seniors pay
$1.00. Sleepovers cost $10.00 and camping
$4.00 per tent.
It is recommended to use warm and waterproof
clothing, sunblock, and to have light
refreshments and hydrating beverages. Before
starting your trip, get information from the forest
rangers as to what is the most convenient path
for your outing.

Location and general information: The
Bio-touristic Corridor of the Yanuncay River
is an ideal path for those who like nature and
culture. The starting point is San Joaqun
parish located four kilometers to the west of
Cuenca. This village is known for its extensive
farming elds, its delicious typical food, and
its intensive artisanal activity where utilitarian
and decorative basketwork is made from duda
(native plant) and carrizo (giant reed). From here
visitors can go west following the Yanuncay
Rivers bank. In the area of Campanahuaico
you can nd childrens games, picnic areas, and
picturesque artisanal bridges made of wood.
On route you can observe different types of
Andean ora and fauna species. There are those
who participate in sport shing in this area in
the Estrella Cocha lakes from where you can
choose different paths for trekking.
A few kilometers before arriving to Soldados,
there are thermal waters located next to the river
on private property; if you would like to go in,
you need to come to an agreement with this
lands owner.
Linear Parks
The city of Cuenca is located within the
southern area of the Ecuadorian Andes, at
2535 meters above sea level. It is surrounded
by a spectacular natural environment, with an
average temperature of 15 C. The city is crossed
from west to east by four tributary rivers to the
Amazon River: the Tomebamba, the Yanuncay,
the Tarqui and the Machngara rivers, which
preserve numerous natural green areas.
Linear parks have been designed on the
banks of the Tomebamba and the Yanuncay
Rivers so people who go through them can
appreciate a variety of fruit trees, native trees,
cultivated owers and grazing land, as well as
a considerable number of birds of Ecuadors
southern Andean region.
Among the activities that we can enjoy in the
linear parks are: walks, aerobics, and ora and
fauna observation. The following avenues are
recommended: 1ero de Mayo, 24 de Mayo, and
12 de Abril.
El Barranco
This city area is located on the banks of the
Tomebamba River, separating the historic center
from the new city. It is recommended to walk
from west to east, following the course of the
water from Puente Centenario until Pumapungo
Archeological Park (12 de Abril Avenue).
To reach Girn and Yunguilla you have to
take the Panamericana Sur on the road Girn-
Pasaje. If you use public transportation, you
have to take a bus from the Land Terminal from
the cooperative Santa Isabel, with frequencies
starting at 05h00 until 21h00 each 30 minutes.
The cost to Girn is $1,20 or in its stead you
could take any bus going to Machala.
Girn
Canton located 44 kilometers south west of
Cuenca. One of the places of interest is the
Museum Casa de los Tratados, where you
can evidence the signing of the Convenio de
Girn, after the battle in 1829, when the Gran
Colombian troops overcame the Peruvians.
There are natural attractions such as El
Chorro, which has two waterfalls (one of them
70 meters high), in a mountainous forest of
great beauty. To reach El Chorro you have to rent
a truck in Girn: the approximate cost is $5.00,
or if you enjoy walking, it will take you about
one hour from the village to the waterfalls. The
entrance fee is $2.00
Yunguilla Valley
Thirty kilometers south of Girn is the Yunguilla
Valley. It is one of the warmest areas in the
province (1.200 to 2.000 meters above sea
level) and its characterized by its cultivation of
sugar cane and fruit trees. It is one of the holiday
centers of highest importance for Cuencanos,
with beautiful summer houses as well as areas
for sports and family time.
How to get there? You have to take the
cooperative Transporte Occidental at the South
Terminal (Feria Libre area); the schedules are
05h30, 06h15, 07h00, 10h20, 12h00, 13h30,
14h00, 16h00, and 17h 45. The cost is $1,25
to La Toreadora refuge. You can also take the
busses with destination Cuenca-Guayaquil
(through Cajas) from the Land Terminal (there
is one each hour). To get back, once you have
nished your visit, you have to take any bus
going back to Cuenca.
Activities: Sport shing, rock climbing,
camping, bird watching, hiking and trekking. To
this effect, the park has reserved ve recreational
tourist areas, which can be visited on your own
or with a tour guide. The most recommended
areas to visit are Llaviuku and Toreadora due to
their infrastructure and easy access.
How to arrive? You can take a bus from the
company Alpes Orientales from Cuencas bus
terminal. There are two departure times: 6h30
and 11h00; in the afternoon, there are ve
departure times: 13h00, 15h40, 17h30, 18h30
and 19h00. Transportation cost is $0.70. The
buses arrive at the community Carmen de Jadn
from where you can take a van that will take you
to the Center, a few kilometers away.
Activities: hiking, trekking, camping, and bird
watching. In the Environmental Management
Center Aguarongo there are three paths of
different lengths and difculty level.
Cost and recommendations: entrance
to the Bio-touristic Corridor of the Yanuncay
River is free. It is recommended to use warm
clothing, comfortable and waterproof shoes,
and sunblock and to take light refreshments and
hydrating beverages.
How to arrive? By private car, you can take
De las Amricas Avenue going south to Enrique
Arzaga Toral Avenue; follow the road to the
west until you arrive to San Joaqun parish to
nally take the road to Barabn from which the
trip begins.
In Cuenca you can take the bus line 19 on
Presidente Crdova Street, which drops you off
at the road to Barabn, in front of Cuenca Tennis
and Golf Club. The cost of the bus ride is $0.25.
Buses go by every 10 minutes starting at 06h00
until 20h00.
The cost of a taxi from the citys center to the
entrance to the road to Barabn is $4.00.
Activities: hiking, trekking, bird watching,
shopping for handicrafts, thermal waters and
typical food.
On this route it is possible to observe capul,
eucalyptus, willows, and walnut trees, as well a
variety of birds native to the urban area.
El Paraso Park
The park constitutes the biggest green area in
Cuenca (20 hectares); it is located in the eastern
part of the city, in the delta formed by the union
of the Tomebamba and the Yanuncay Rivers. Its
main access is on Paraso Avenue, which is the
continuation of the 12 de Abril Avenue, parallel
to the Tomebamba River.
The majority of the park is covered by natural
arboreal vegetation; eucalyptus forests and
species natural of the Andean valleys stand out;
several bird species have adapted perfectly to
the area.
The park has recreational grounds and an
interpretation and educational environmental
area. Among the activities that can be done
here are: walks, aerobics, and ora and fauna
observation.
From Cuencas downtown area, you can take
bus line 14 on Calle Larga, which will leave you
in front of El Paraso Park. There are bus lines
every 10 minutes from 6h00 to 19h00. The cost
of the bus ride is $0.25.

Girn - Yunguilla
Ubicacin y Generalidades: El Parque Na-
cional Cajas est localizado en la Cordillera
Occidental del Sur de los Andes ecuatorianos a
tan solo 35 km. de la ciudad de Cuenca en direc-
cin noroeste. Su altitud va de los 3.156 a 4.450
msnm. Tiene una extensin de 288 km2 (28.544
hectreas) e incluye un complejo lacustre de 235
lagunas de origen glaciar, conectadas unas con
otras por riachuelos y arroyos. Su temperatura
oscila entre los -2C a 18C. En el parque se
encuentran sitios de inters arqueolgico, entre
ellos varios tramos del Qhapaqan (Camino Real
Andino) que conectan la costa con la sierra y que
en perodos pre-Inca e Inca servan, entre otros
muchos nes, para la circulacin de la concha
Spondylus, objeto de alto valor econmico de la
poca.
Recomendaciones: Para hacer uso del refu-
gio es necesario llevar una bolsa de dormir. Se
recomienda utilizar ropa abrigada e impermeable,
protector solar, refrigerio, bebidas hidratantes
y visitar el sitio con un gua calicado. Si se lo
visita solo, no se deber alejar de los puntos
de partida (junto a la carretera o en las zonas de
Ubicacin y generalidades: El bosque an-
dino del Aguarongo esta localizado a 30 km
al este de la ciudad de Cuenca. Su altitud va de
los 2900 a 3320 msnm. Tiene una supercie de
2.086 hectreas, su temperatura media se esti-
ma entre 11,5 y 12 centgrados.
El bosque del Aguarongo es uno de los pocos
bosques nativos que quedan en la provincia del
Azuay. En su interior podemos encontrar ora y
fauna caracterstica del rea de bosque hmero
montano bajo.
Como una estrategia para defender el bosque y
conservar la vida de las comunidades, desde el
ao de 1995 la Fundacin Ecolgica Rikcharina
y la Fundacin Ayuda en Accin Ecuador, vienen
realizando en conjunto con las comunidades del
sector, trabajos de recuperacin y proteccin de
los recursos naturales que all se encuentran,
acompaado de actividades de capacitacin y
educacin ambiental dirigidas a nios y adultos.
Facilidades del Centro. El Centro de Gestin
Ambiental Aguarongo cuenta con servicios de
alojamiento, alimentacin (se debe coordinar
este servicio con anterioridad, llamando a las
ocinas de la Fundacin Rikcharina), laborato-
rio, auditorio y senderos de interpretacin.
Costo y Recomendaciones: El costo de
ingreso para ecuatorianos y extranjeros es de
2,00 USD. Nios menores de 12 aos y adultos
mayores 1,00 USD. Pernoctacin 10,00 USD.
Acampar 4 USD por carpa.
Se recomienda utilizar ropa abrigada e imper-
meable, protector solar, refrigerio y bebidas
hidratantes. Antes de iniciar su recorrido infr-
mese con el personal de guarda parques cul es
el sendero ms conveniente para su caso.

Ubicacin y generalidades: El Corredor Bio-
turstico del ro Yanuncay, es un recorrido ideal
para quienes gustan de naturaleza y cultura. El
punto de partida es la parroquia San Joaqun,
ubicada a cuatro kilmetros al oeste de Cuenca.
Este poblado, es conocido por sus extensos
campos de cultivo, por su deliciosa comida
tpica y por su intensa actividad artesanal, pues
se confecciona cestera utilitaria y decorativa en
base de la bra de duda y carrizo. Desde
aqu el visitante, puede dirigirse en direccin
oeste siguiendo las mrgenes del ro Yanuncay.
En el sector de Campanahuaico, se pueden
encontrar juegos infantiles, reas de pic-nic y
pintorescos puentes artesanales de madera.
En el recorrido se observarn diferentes es-
pecies de ora y fauna andina. Hay quienes
realizan pesca deportiva en este sector en las
lagunas de Estrella Cocha desde donde se
puede optar por tomar diversas rutas para rea-
lizar senderismo.
A pocos kilmetros antes de llegar a Soldados,
existen aguas termales ubicadas junto al ro en
una propiedad privada, por lo que si se desea
ingresar en ellas se debe llegar a un acuerdo
con el dueo de estos terrenos.
Parques Lineales
La ciudad de Cuenca, est enclavada al sur del
callejn interandino ecuatoriano, a una altitud
de 2535 msnm. Posee un espectacular medio
natural que la rodea, con una temperatura pro-
medio de 15 C. La ciudad esta atravesada de
oeste a este por cuatro ros auentes del ro
Amazonas: Tomebamba, Yanuncay, Tarqui y Ma-
chngara, los que conservan numerosas reas
verdes naturales.
A las orillas de los ros Tomebamba y Yanun-
cay se han dispuesto parques lineales donde
las personas que lo recorran pueden apreciar
una variedad de rboles frutales, rboles nati-
vos, ores cultivadas y pastizales, as como una
considerable cantidad de aves de la zona sur
andina del Ecuador.
Entre las actividades que podemos realizar en
los parques lineales tenemos: caminatas, acti-
vidades aerbicas, observacin de ora y fauna.
Se recomienda recorrer las siguientes avenidas:
Primero de Mayo, Veinticuatro de Mayo y 12 de
Abril.
El Barranco
Este sector de la ciudad se encuentra a las ori-
llas del ro Tomebamba, separando al centro
histrico de la ciudad nueva. Es recomendable
recorrerlo de oeste a este siguiendo el curso de
sus aguas, desde el Puente Centenario hasta el

viaje lo realiza a travs de transporte pblico, de-
ber tomar desde el Terminal Terrestre, buses de

a partir de las 05h00 hasta las 21h00 cada 30 mi-
nutos. El costo a Girn es de $1,20.
Girn
Cantn ubicado a 44 km al suroeste de Cuenca.
Uno de los sitios de inters del lugar es el Museo
de la Casa de los Tratados, en el cual se evidencia
la rma del Convenio de Girn, luego de la batalla
de 1829, cuando las tropas Gran Colombianas
se impusieron a las peruanas. Existen atractivos
naturales como El Chorro, el cual consta de dos
cadas de agua (una de ellas de 70mde altura), en
un bosque montano de gran belleza Para llegar a
El Chorro, deber rentar una camioneta en Gi-
rn: el costo aproximado es de $5.00, o si gusta
de las caminatas, le tomar aproximadamente una
hora desde el poblado el llegar all. El valor de
ingreso al Chorro es de $2.00.
Valle de Yunguilla
A 30km al sur de Girn se encuentra el Valle de
Yunguilla. Es uno de los sectores mas abrigados
de la provincia (1.200 a 2.000 msnm) y se carac-
teriza por el cultivo de caa de azcar y rboles
frutales. Es uno de los centros vacacionales de
mayor importancia de los cuencanos, con hermo-
sas casas de veraneo, as como lugares de espar-
cimiento deportivo y deleite familiar.

Como llegar? Se debe tomar el bus Coope-
rativa Transporte Occidental en el Terminal Sur
(sector de la Feria Libre); los horarios son 05h30,

16h00, 17h45. El costo es de $1,25 hasta la
entrada principal: La Toreadora. Tambin puede
tomar los buses con destino Cuenca - Guayaquil
(va El Cajas) desde el Terminal Terrestre (hay
frecuencia cada hora). Para el regreso, una vez
terminada la visita se deber tomar cualquier bus
cuya direccin tenga como destino la ciudad de
Cuenca.
Actividades: Pesca deportiva, escalada en
roca, acampado, avistamiento de aves, rute-
rismo y senderismo. El parque ha destinado 13
zonas de recreacin turstica, 5 para sendersmo
(fcil) y 8 para ruterismo (exigente), antes de
iniciar su recorrido infrmese con el personal
de guardaparques qu es lo ms conveniente
para su caso.
Cmo llegar? Se puede tomar los buses de
la empresa Alpes Orientales desde el Terminal
Terrestre de Cuenca. Existen dos frecuencias
en la maana: 6h30 y 11h00, en la tarde cin-
co frecuencias: 13h00, 15h40, 17h30, 18h30
y 19h00. El valor es de 0,70 USD. Los buses
llegan hasta la comunidad Carmen de Jadn
desde donde se pueden tomar camionetas que
le llevarn al centro, ubicado a pocos kilme-
tros.
Actividades: Ruterismo y senderismo, acam-
pado, avistamiento de aves, en el Centro de
Gestin Aguarongo existen 3 senderos de dife-
rente duracin y nivel de dicultad.

Costo y Recomendaciones: El ingreso al
Corredor Bioturstico del ro Yanuncay no tiene
costo. Se recomienda utilizar ropa y calzado c-
modo e impermeable, protector solar, refrigerio
y bebidas hidratantes.
Cmo llegar? Si se dirige en vehculo priva-
do puede tomar la Av. de las Amricas en direc-
cin sur hasta la Av. Enrique Arzaga Toral, se-
guir la va en direccin oeste hasta la parroquia
San Joaqun, para nalmente acceder al camino
a Barabn desde donde inicia el recorrido.
En Cuenca se puede tomar la lnea de buses No.
19, en la calle Presidente Crdova, la cual le
dejar en el camino a Barabn, frente al Cuenca
Tennis y Golf Club. El costo del pasaje es de
0,25 USD. Existen frecuencias cada 10 minutos
desde las 06h00 hasta las 20h00.
El costo del taxi desde el centro de la ciudad
hasta la entrada al camino a Barabn es de
4,00 USD
Actividades: Ruterismo y senderismo, avis-
tamiento de aves, adquisicin de artesanas,
gastronoma tradicional, aguas termales.
Parque Arqueolgico Pumapungo (Avenida 12
de Abril).
En el recorrido se puede observar rboles de
capules, eucaliptos, sauces, nogales, as como
una variedad de aves propias de la zona urbana.
Parque El Paraso
El parque constituye el rea verde ms grande
de la ciudad de Cuenca (20 hectreas) se en-
cuentra en el sector este de la ciudad, en el delta
que forma la unin de los ros Tomebamba y
Yanuncay. El acceso principal se encuentra en la
Av. Paraso que es la continuacin de la Av. 12
de Abril, paralela del ro Tomebamba.
La mayor parte del parque esta cubierta por
vegetacin arbustiva natural, se distinguen
bosques de eucaliptos y especies propias de los
valles interandinos, varias especies de aves se
han adaptado perfectamente al lugar.
El parque cuenta con zonas de recreacin, rea
de interpretacin y educacin ambiental. Entre
las actividades que se pueden realizar en el rea
podemos mencionar: caminatas, actividades ae-
rbicas, observacin de ora y fauna, etc.
Desde el centro de la ciudad de Cuenca se
puede tomar la lnea de buses No. 14, en la
calle Larga, la cual de dejar frente al Parque
El Paraso. El costo del pasaje es de 0,25 USD.
Existen frecuencias cada 10 minutos desde las
06h00 hasta las 19h00.
