SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

I think its better to start to define what development is first. For me defining
DEVELOPMENT IS A VERY BROAD CONCEPT. I encountered many proponent of development,
which tells what development must be.
According to Stiglitz (2002), development IS INTERPRETED AS BEING THE SAME
MEANING OR NEARLY THE SAME WITH ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. But if we take research
about it, economic development is ANOTHER CONCEPT OR FORM OF DEVELOPMENT same with
social development. Based on the presentation of Ms. Manjares, RSW, MSSW about
DEVELOPMENT PERSPECTIVE IN SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE that economic development and
social development are one of the perspectives or approaches of development.
I remember the concept of THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES, DEVELOP and UNDEVELOPED
COUNTRIES before when we tackle about development in the discussion. These concepts where
develop and discover because the perspective or approach apply was ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT based from the presentation is the transition of
agriculture-based to industrial economy, adaptation of new technological trends and high
standard of living.
If I am going to assess or interpret what our country and including other countries
experiencing, it is because of economic development approach that labeled our country and
other countries as developed and underdeveloped. On the other side, SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
based on the same presentation is a process of PLANNED SOCIAL CHANGE that made in order
to promote well-being of all people that at the same time joined together with the dynamic
process of economic development.
In social development, the economic growth has impact on the well-being of its people,
social program must bring economic return and at the same time there is collaboration of social
and economic investment. It is the foundation of development of social development. In this
kind of approach or perspective its distinction to economic development is it is always towards
human betterment.
