PHStat2 is Windows software that assists you in learning the concepts of statistics while using Microsoft Excel.
PHStat2 allows you to perform many common types of statistical analyses working with and using the familiar
Microsoft Excel interface.
The rest of this document is organied into sections that will assist you in setting up and using PHStat2. !ote" #n this

1 PHStat2 Technical Requirements
There are separate re*uirements for using PHStat2 and running the PHStat2 setup program. The re*uirements for
running the setup program are more exclusi6e. #f you plan to setup PHStat2$ make sure to re6iew all of the
re*uirements that follow.
Requirements for using PHStat2:

PHStat2 no longer supports Excel versions earlier than Excel 2003. Users of earlier Excel versions will be
able to install PHStat2 but will discover that the new procedures discussed in Section 7 will not function
properl.

Requirements for running the PHStat2 setup program:
>pproximately (2 M? hard disk free space while running the setup program and - M? hard disk space after
program setup.
Windows user account with administrator pri6ileges. Student or faculty accounts used to login onto networked
computers in academic settings typically do not ha6e this pri6ilege. #f you ha6e such an account$ ask your
network or la% technician for assistance.
2a Configuring !cel 2003 Securit" for PHStat2
The Microsoft =ffice macro security le6el must %e set to Medium in order to allow PHStat2 to properly function.
=pen Microsoft Excel and select !ools Macro Securit". #n the Securit" #e$el ta% of the Security dialog %ox
that appears$ click the Medium option and then click %&.
Setting the security le6el in this dialog %ox$ affects all Microsoft =ffice programs. When you are finished using
PHStat2$ you can set the security le6el to High$ for greatest security. 9#f you set the le6el to High$ remem%er to reset
the le6el to Medium %efore you next open and use PHStat2.;.
#f you cannot see the Macro choice on the Tools menu$ it may %e hidden from 6iew due to the way that
Microsoft =ffice is currently displaying menu choices. To dou%le:check this$ open Microsoft Excel and select !ools
'ustomi(e. #n the +ustomie dialog %ox$ clear 9uncheck; the Menus show recentl" used commands first check
%ox if it is checked and click 'lose. +learing this check %ox will cause e6ery Microsoft =ffice program to show
e6ery choice on e6ery menu. 9@ou can re6erse this setting at any time.; +learing this check %ox will also %e helpful
when using PHStat2 as you will %e always a%le to see e6ery choice on the PHStat menu that appears inside Excel.
2b Configuring !cel 200#$!cel 2010 Securit" for PHStat2
@ou must change the Trust +enter settings to allow PHStat2 to properly function. <ollow these steps"
(. #n Excel 2,,.$ click the %ffice )utton and then click *+cel %ptions 9at %ottom of the =ffice ?utton menu
window;. #n Excel 2,(,$ click ,ile %ptions.

notification.

=n some systems with stringent security settings$ you may need to modify step 2. <or such systems$ in step 2$ click
!rusted #ocations in the left pane and then$ in the Trusted Aocations right pane$ click -dd new location to add the
folder path to the PHStat2 add:in 9typically +"BProgram <ilesBPHStat2; %efore you click %&.
3 Setting u% PHStat2
To use PHStat2$ you first need to run the PHStat2 setup program to add PHStat2 to your system. ?efore using the
setup program$ make sure you ha6e re6iewed the details of the pre6ious two sections and ha6e 6erified that your
copy of Microsoft Excel is properly configured and updated and that your system meets all technical re*uirements
listed in section (.
Having reviewing the rest of this readme file, download the PHStat2 setup program and save the file
to the folder of your choice. The PHStat2 setup program installs the PHStat2 files to your system and
adds entries in the Windows registry file for your system. The setup program also adds Desktop icons and
a Start enu program group for PHStat2.
!un the setup program only after first logging on to Windows using a user account that include
administrator privileges. "!unning the setup program with a Windows user account that does not include
these privileges will prevent the setup program from properly installing PHStat2.#
$f your system contains Windows %ista, Windows &, or certain third'party security programs, you may
see messages asking you to (permit) or (allow) specific system operations as the setup program
e*ecutes. $f you do not give the setup program the necessary permissions, PHStat2 will not +e properly
installed on your computer.
,fter the setup completes, check the installation +y opening PHStat2. , proper installation will cause
-*cel to display a PHStat menu in the ,dd'$ns ta+ "-*cel 2..& or -*cel 2./.# or the menu +ar "-*cel
2..0#. $f you have skipped checking for and applying necessary -*cel updates, or if some of the updates
were una+le to +e applied, you may see a (1ompile -rror) message that talks a+out a (hidden module)
when you first attempt to use PHStat2. $f this occurs, repeat the process to check for and update -*cel.

@ou use PHStat2 %y dou%le:clicking the Cesktop PHStat2 icon or selecting PHStat2 from the Start menu PHStat2
program group. #f you prefer$ you can use the Excel 9<ile; =pen dialog %ox to open the PHStat2.xla file directly.
=nce properly loaded$ PHStat2 will add a new PHStat menu in the >dd:#ns ta% of Excel 2,,. or Excel 2,(, or the
Excel menu %ar in Excel 2,,-.
When you use the correct Excel security settings 9see Section 2a or 2%;$ you will see a macro 6irus warning
dialog %ox as you attempt to open PHStat2. Should this dialog %ox appear$ click the *nable Macros %utton to allow
PHStat2 96irus:free$ as shipped; to %e opened.

) Troubleshooting PHStat2.
/'ompile error in hidden module/ message. #f you get an error message that mentions a compile error in a hidden
module or work%ook when you start PHStat2$ you copy of Excel may not %e properly updated. +heck for
updates for your copy of Microsoft Excel at office.microsoft.com/officeupdate.
*rror message during installation using 0indows 1 +23 423.bit software. #f$ during installation$ you get a
dialog %ox message that notes that some components failed to self:register$ click the 'ontinue %utton in the
dialog %ox to complete the installation. @ou may ha6e to update your Windows . and reinstall PHStat2 at a later
time.
/5ne+pected error/ message when running a PHStat2 procedure. <irst 6erify that PHStat2 was properly set up
of your system. Then re6iew the PHStat2 help system topics for the procedure as well as the topic DPreparing
Cata for >nalysisD to 6erify that any data necessary for the procedure has %een properly organied in your
worksheet. Most unexpected errors arise from incorrectly prepared input data. #f this error only occurs with
se6eral procedures$ 6erify that you ha6e the >nalysis ToolPak and the >nalysis ToolPak E 8?> add:ins properly
loaded 9see Section 2;.

pro%lems of this type are caused %y user accounts that do not permission to setup up application software in a
networked en6ironment.
PHStat menu fails to open or fails to appear. @our Excel macro security setting is incorrect. +hange setting to
Medium option as explained in Section -a or -%. Aess likely$ this pro%lem can also %e caused %y certain settings
in older anti:6irus programs that ha6e not %een properly updated
