The rate will be dependant on the number of bedrooms you require as given by the size criteria below and the
area in which you choose to live. Local Housing Allowance is a means tested benefit so the rates shown are the
maximum amounts that you may be able to get. Also if the rent charged is less than the local housing rate
applicable to you then the surplus will be capped to a maximum of £15 per week.

The size criteria is calculated by working down this list, the number of living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms is
ignored. From 6 April 2009, the LHA rate is capped to the five bedroom rate. This means that no one will be
entitled to LHA for six or more bedrooms.

One bedroom for:

• Every adult couple


• Any other adult aged 16 or over
• Any two children under the age of 10
• Any two children of the same sex aged 0-15
• Any other child

So for example a couple John and Janice who have two children Robert and James ages 5 and 8 would be
eligible for the 2 bedroom rate.
