WEEK 1 - What's in a name?

Discover how much your first name is worth if every consonant has a value of $5
and vowels are $10. Compare the value of your name with those of your family
members. Graph your family results to see which names have the greatest and
least value. Find the range of numbers (the difference between the greatest
and least value). What do you notice on the graph about the names with the
greatest and least value?

WEEK 2 Gauss the Mathematician

Carl Gauss quickly solved this problem when he was 10 years old: "Find the sum
of the first 100 counting numbers." Try it. How long does it take you to solve
the problem? Look up information about Carl Gauss and see if you can find out
how he solved the problem.

WEEK 3 Can you canoe?
Kid Kongo is building a canoe to use on the Limpopo River.The new canoe has
three seats, one at the front, one in the middle and one at the back. He has
invited Victoria and Jinja to join him on the journey. How many different
seating arrangements are there for Kid Kongo, Victoria and Jinja in the canoe?

WEEK 4 Pineapples & Figs
Albert unpacked 19 kilograms of pineapples and figs. The pineapples came in 4-
kilogram bags and the figs came in 5-kilogram bags. In all, Albert unpacked 4
bags of fruit. How many bags of pineapples and bags of figs did he unpack?
Attempt 1 problem each week for homework. Read the problem carefully.
Decide on the best strategy to use to solve the problem eg trial and error;
diagram, algorithm etc. In your homework book show neatly and clearly how you
worked out your answer.

WEEK 6 Plenty of Pens
Amy went into her local stationery shop. Her mum had given her $2.50 to spend.
Amy liked the look of some luminous pens, which cost 15c each, and some fancy
pencils, which cost 10c each.
She bought four times as many pens as pencils and was given 40c change.
How many of each did she buy?
WEEK 7 Flash Harry
In April Flash Harry bought a saddle for $100.
In May he sold it for $200.
In June he was sorry he had sold it.
So he bought it back for $300.
In July he got tired of it.
So he sold it for $400.
Overall, did Flash Harry make or lose money?



WEEK 8 Age Old Problem
1. My age this year is a multiple of 8. Next year it will be a multiple of 7.
How old am I?

2. Last year my age was a square number. Next year it will be a cube number.
How old am I?
How long must I wait until my age is both a square number and a cube?

3. My Mum was 27 when I was born. 8 years ago she was twice as old as I shall
be in 5 years time. How old am I now?

WEEK 9 Money bags
Rami divided 15 cents among four small bags. He could then pay any sum of
money from 1c to 15c, without opening any bag. How many cents did Rami put in
each bag?

WEEK 10 Presents
Gen paid $21 for five presents.
For A and B she paid a total of $6.
For B and C she paid a total of $10.
For C and D she paid a total of $7.
For D and E she paid a total of $9.
How much did Gen pay for each present?
