Short Answers Chapter #2 According to Federal Board Islamabad
1. What is Information Networs!
Information networks are the computer networks that communicate with public telecommunication
networks. Information networks, two important technologies: computing and telecommunications
work together.
2. "e#ne the Networ.
Network (or computer network) is a way to connect computers together so that they can
communicate with each other and share information.
$. What is %ocal Area Networ!
Local Area Network (LAN) is a network system in which computers are interconnected in a limited
geographical area, such as network of computers in college computer laboratory or network of
computers in oce building etc)
!. What is Networ&Interface Card"
network interface card (NI#) is used to connect a computer to other computers in the local area
network. It is a circuit board that is installed inside the computer$s internal e%pansion slots.
'. What is Bridge!
A bridge is an electronic de&ice that connects two similar networks and controls the data 'ow
between them. A bridge recogni(es the messages on a network and passes on those addressed to
nodes in other network.
(. What is )atewa*!
A gateway is also an electronic de&ice or system (collection of hardware and software resources) that
connects two networks and translates information from one to the other. It enables a computer or
node to communicate with a computer on another di)erent network.
+. What is ,o-ter!
*outer is a communication de&ice that connects two or more networks is called router and transmits
data to the correct destination on the network. It uses the routing protocols.
.. What is Networ /rotocol!
All machine+base communications must follow certain set of rules for e%change of data between
nodes connected to a network. ,he rules to send and recei&e data are called protocols.
0. What is 1thernet!
-thernet is the most commonly used protocol in LAN. It uses a high+speed network cable and bus
topology, so it is relati&ely simple and cheaper.
12. What is CS3A4C"!
.efore transmitting the data, a node must /nd out if the cable is in use. If so, the node must wait.
0hen the cable is free, the node must begin transmitting immediately. ,his process is also known as
#12A3#4 (#arrier 1ense 2ultiple Access with #ollision 4etection).
11. "e#ne the term toen -sed in networing.
A token is a special electronic signal. It consists of a series of bits, which functions like a ticket. ,he
computer with the token can transmit data o&er the network. 5nly one token e%ists per network.
12. What is 5oen ring!
A computer network in which each node is connected to two ad6acent nodes or neighbors form a
closed ring or loop is called ring network topology. ,he token ring protocol is used in this type of
network. ,he token ring is closely associated with I.2, which works on the concept of a ring network
and a token.

cable, and the star topology with hub attached to the network.
1'. What is Wide Area Networ 7WAN8!
A 0ide Area Network is a network system that co&ers a large (or wide) geographical area such as
di)erent cities of country or di)erent countries of the world)
1(. What is 3etropolitan Area Networ!
A metropolitan area network (2AN) is a communication network system that co&ers a geographical
area of a single city. 9sually, 2AN connects more than one LANs in a city or town and co&ers a
smaller geographical area than a 0AN. 2obile phones (cellular) systems are often 2ANs.
1+. What is Networ Standards!
,he standards are the precise documents containing technical and physical speci/cations about the
network being designed) Normally those standards are taken into consideration and are worldwide
acceptable.
1.. What is "e Facto Standard!
4e facto means :by tradition: or :by facts:. ,hese standards were de&eloped without any formal plan
and came to e%istence because of historical de&elopments. ,hese standards are most commonly
used by the organi(ations worldwide.
10. What is "e 9-re Standard!
4e ;ure means :according to law or regulation:. ,hese standards ha&e been properly appro&ed by the
networks go&erning body.
22. Write names of some networs go:erning bodies.
,he names of most popular networks go&erning bodies are:
American National 1tandard Institute (AN1I)
,he Institute of -lectrical and -lectronics -ngineers (I---)
,he International 1tandard 5rgani(ation (I15)
,he International ,elecommunications 9nion+,elecommunication 1tandards 1ector (I,9+,,
formally ##I,,)
,he -lectronic Industries Association (-IA)
21. What is client4ser:er networ model!
In client3ser&er network (or arrangement), the clients are all computers or nodes on the network and
ser&er is a central computer that controls the network. In addition to control the network, the ser&er
also pro&ides a centrali(ed storage area for programs and data) It has hard disks that hold the shared
data /le or database. <
22. What is /eer&to&/eer Networ model!
In peer+to+peer arrangement, all nodes (or computers) on the network ha&e e=ual status. No one has
control o&er others. -ach computer stores /les on its own storage de&ices and has its own peripheral
de&ices. ,he users can share each other$s data and de&ices (or resources) as and when needed)
2$. What is ;*brid Networ model!
%akistan International #&'ool (iyad' )uly *" 2+,- %a.e #8378
Computer Networks #2 Class XI Compiled by Wasim Anjum
Farooqi (Md!"MC#$
,he hybrid network has combined features of both client3ser&er and peer+to+peer networks (or
arrangements). It has a ser&er and the users can share the data and software. 1imilarly, each node
can store its own /les, programs, and has its own peripheral de&ices.
8!. "e#ne the term networ 5opolog*.
In networking, the term topology is the way of connecting nodes (or de&ices) on a network. In other
words, a topology represents the shape of network.
2'. What is B-s 5opolog*!
In bus network, all nodes (or de&ices) are connected to a common communication medium or central
single cable. ,his single cable is called bus. ,he de&ices or nodes are attached with the central cable
(or bus) through interface connector.
2(. What is ,ing 5opolog*!
In a ring network, each node is connected to two ad6acent nodes or neighbors for communication
purpose and forms a closed ring or loop. In this way the last node connects to the /rst node to
complete the ring. In this network, all messages tra&el through a ring in one direction (clockwise or
anti+clockwise) from node to node.
2+. What is Star 5opolog*!
In a star network, each node or de&ice is directly connected to a central connection point known as
$>ub$. ,he central connection may be an actual >ub or a switch. ,ypically, the nodes or de&ices are
connected to the >ub with unshielded twisted pair (9,?) -thernet.
2.. What is tree topolog*!
In tree network, the nodes are connected to each other in such a way that forms a tree like structure.
,ypically to form a tree network, multiple star topologies are combined together onto a bus. In this
simplest form, only >ub de&ices connect directly to the tree bus. -ach >ub functions as the root of a
tree of de&ices.
20. What is 3esh 5opolog*!
In mesh network, each node is directly connected to all node on the network. ,his type of network
in&ol&es the concept of routes. In this type of network, each node may send message to destination
through multiple paths.
