SPECIFICATION FOR PRIMARY
ALUMINIUM INGOTS FOR REMELTING
FOR AIRCRAFT PURPOSES
( Thi rd Revi si on)
0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( Third Revision ) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 30 September 1980, after the draft finalized by
the Light Metals and Their Alloys Sectional Committee had been
approved by the Structural and Metals Division Council.
0.2 This standard was first published in 1950 as a tentative standard and
subsequently revised in 1959 and 1965. In the present revision, the
following modifications have been incorporated:
a) Requirements of 998 percent aluminium have been included,
b) Total impurity limits for the different grades have been specified,
c) Requirements for marking, packing and shipping have been
modified, and
d) Materials have been designated in the digital system in accord-
ance with IS : 6051-1970*.
0.3 For the puipose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accord-
ance with IS : 2-1960 . The number of significant places retained in
the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value
in this standard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard covers requirements for 99, 995, 997 and 998 percent
primary aluminium notched bars and ingots for remelting, for aircraft
purposes.
*Code for designation of aluminium and its alloys,
+Rules for rounding off numerical values ( rwiscd ).

2. TERMINOLOGY
2.0 For the purpose of this standard,
the following definitions shall
apply.
2.1 Cast - A cast shall be defined as one of the following:
a) The product of one furnace melt,
b) The product of one crucible melt,
c) The product of a number of furnace or crucible melts mixed
prior to casting,
d) The amount of melt tapped from the furnace without any
further addition having been made when a continuous melting
process is employed for the production of ingots, and
e) As may otherwise be defined by the inspecting authority.
2.2 Approved Scrap - Scrap which is:
a) derived from material the composition of which has been esta-
blished with regard to the complete range of both the alloying
elements and impurity elements appropriate to the class of
the material being made; and
b) segregated and identifiable to the satisfaction of the inspecting
authority.
3. SUPPLY OF MATERIAL
3.1 General requirements relating to the supply of primary aluminium
notched bars and ingots for remelting for aircraft purposes shall be as
laid down in IS : 1387-1967*.
4. MANUFACTURE
4.1 The material shall be produced by reduction of alumina by electric
smelting or reduction furnace, and shall be cast into notched bars or
ingots.
4.2 Approved scrap may be used for the production of the metal at the
discretion of the manufacturer.
5. FREEDOM FROM DEFECTS
5.1 The ingots shall be clean with no traces of overflows, poor pouring,
slag inclusions or dross.
*General requirements for the supply of metals and metal products ( revised ).

6. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
6.1 The chemical composition of the material when analyzed in accord-
ance with IS : 504-1963* shall be as given in Table 1.

NOTE 1 - Aluminium shall be determined by difference.
NOTE 2 - The manufacturer shall supply to the inspector, if required, the exact
percentages of the specified elements present in every cast.
7. SHAPE AND SIZE
7.1 Notched bars and ingots should preferably be supplied in shapes and
sizes conforming to IS : 1820-1963t.
8. IDENTIFICATION AND MARKING
8.1 All notched bars and ingots should bear the manufacturers mark, the
number of cast and the mark of Inspector. Alternatively, the notched
bars and ingots approved by the Inspector shall be wired in bundles, the
necessary marks being stamped on a metal label, and the label being
securely attached to each bundle. The method of packing for shipping
shall be as per agreement between the manufacturer and the customer.
8.2 Each lot of aluminium being delivered should be accompanied with
a test certificate, certifying that the delivered aluminium conforms to the
requirements of this standard with identification of:
a) manufacturers name, its location or address;
b) grade of aluminium;
c) chemical test results: and
d) cast number.
*Methods of chemical analysis of aluminium and its alloys ( revised ).
tRecommended shapes and sizes of aluminium notched bars and ingots for remelt-
ing purposes.

8.3 Notched bars and ingots may also be marked with the ISI Certifica-
tion Mark.
NOTE - The use of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the
Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules and Regu-
lations made thereunder. The ISI Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard
conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements
of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality
control which is devised and supervised by IS1 and operated by the producer. IS1
marked products are also continuously checked by ISI for conformity to that standard
a
as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of
the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be
obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.
9. SELECTlON OF SAMPLES FOR ANALYSIS
9.1 At least one sample shall be selected at random by the inspector
from appropriately 1 000 kg of metal cast. The minimum number of
analysis required may be increased by the inspector if he is not satisfied
with the conditions of manufacture.
9.2 Wherever possible, samples shall be taken directly from the stream
of metal filling the moulds, midway through the pour. Samples shall be
heavily chill cast preferably of dimensions 150 x 50 ~6 mm, unless special
spectrographic samples are made. All samples shall be suitably marked
with the identity of the cast they represent.
9.3 Where for special reasons samples are required for ingots or notched
bars, samples shall be obtained by milling or other suitable method and
shall be taken from throughout the thickness of the notched bar or ingot
after the skin of the notched bar or ingot has been removed.
10. RETEST
10.1 If a sample selected for testing fails to meet the requirements of
the specification, two further samples shall be taken from the same lot
of metal. If either of these samples fails to meet the requirements of
the specification, the whole of the metal represented shall be rejected.
