Hello Ali,

This is Gillian. Im sure you figured that out, though. Im not sure whether youll find
this right away, or not for a while, but I figured I might as well write this. Its an
unofficial guide to the playlist I made for you. Also, spell check is a little bitch and it
trying to tell me that playlist is not a word, so I added the word to the dictionary in my
version of icrosoft !ord. I like it better as one word. It is currently "#$"%am on
August ", #&"". I apologi'e in advance for the rambliness (fuck you spell check,
rambliness will be a word if I want it to be) of this message. Im pretty much typing out
whatever pops into my head.
*o, I sent the +, the first time, but then the mail returned it back to me because I didnt
put enough stamps on the envelope. I took this as a sign to add some more music.
+hances are Ive already told you this through some other form of communication, but if
I havent, then you should know that there werent as many songs the first time around. I
told myself that I would stop at "&& songs, but clearly that didnt happen.
I decided to put them on the +, mostly in alphabetical order. There are a few
instrumentals on there, which are by -.plosions in the *ky, -luvium, /01ay ,og and
2iruma. *kip them if you want to listen to something with lyrics.
I included all of the songs I have from A Thorn for -very Heart because you said you
liked it once when you were in my room. I also added 3ust *urrender, because I played
them for you and you said you liked them. I tried not to include more than two or three
songs for artists I really liked. The e.ceptions for that were 4ightstar and *tory of the
2ear (that one I narrowed down 5uite a bit to the ones I like the most) because they rock,
and I think youll en6oy them. *ome other bands I included because I think you might
like them are *enses 4ail, 1ise Against, Aiden, and 4uneral for a 4riend. Another band
that Im a bit more iffy about, but that I think youll en6oy is *um 7".
8egion of ,oom isnt a band, but a mash0up group that mashes songs together. I think
they do a really good 6ob, and I think you might like I Know What You Buried Last
Summer. Im not so sure about the other two.
The only rap9hip0hop artist that I put in the playlist that I like in a non0guilty0pleasure
kind of way is :.o.: (the initial reason why I liked him is because he mentions ;intendo
<7) . The rest of the rap on there is pretty much terrible :ritish rap music that I love$
Oopsy Daisy by +hipmunk (I know what youre thinking= with that name how is could
that be anything less than stellar?) and No ore !I Lo"e You#s# by issing Andy
(especially terrible, but I love it). Two mash0ups with >terrible? rap music included are
$ands Down %andhi by 8egion of ,oom (mentioned earlier) and Li&e Omg' Baby by ,3
-arworm.
If you want to listen to a song about an abusive relationship try In the (ough (dont
worry, its not depressing e.actly) by Anna ;alick. If you want a song about a mutually
violent and volatile relationship try Kiss with a )ist by 4lorence @ the achine. If you
want to take the abuse further into murder territory, I suggest I *an#t Decide by the
*cissor *isters.
If you are all upset and want to listen to depressing music, I suggest Bac& to Blac& by
Amy !inehouse (especially fitting as she 6ust recently died(bonus points)) Where Does
the %o by Tegan and *arah, World Spins adly On by the !eepies, +uly ,-' ,../ by
eghan Ton6es (its a cover of the original, but I prefer hers over the original), Now
0hat You#re %one by 1yan Adams, Wrec& o1 the Day by Anna ;alick(I play this one on
guitar a lot), So Long by Ingrid ichaelson and both 8es iserables songs. I think 2
Wish by Gregory and the Hawk is especially sad. I included a fair amount of depressing
music, so 6ust keep scrolling around and youll find something.
I included some older artists, like The +hiffons, ;at Aing +ole, argaret !hiting, and
Tony :enett. y aim was to limit the older music, so I narrowed it down to these guys
and girls.
If you feel as if the world is fucking you over, I suggest the song 0otally )uc&ed. Bretty
much any of the *tory of the 2ear songs fit as well.
Cn the contrary, if you want to listen to a Dfuck you, Im fabulousE song, I suggest You
Don#t Own e by 8eslie Gore, I#ll *ry 0omorrow by +auteri'e(sort of), Ne3t Best 0hing
by ;ikki F 1ich, O"er e Now by Gloriana (its country0pop, though, so I dont know if
youll really like it), Your Biggest ista&e by -llie Goulding (I think this is supposed to
be about her dad= it was the penultimate song she sang when I saw her in concert), O"er
You by Acceptance, or King o1 2nything by *am Tsui (Its not actually by him, but I
prefer his cover of the song).
A song with really cool drums is Wa&e to the Sun by +auteri'e.
I also included a *panish song that I like and learned my 3unior year in high school. Im
not sure if its an embarrassing song to like in *pain, but I used to like it (its by 3uanes).
I also included Suerte by *hakira which is the *panish version of Where"er Whene"er. I
dont know if you like *hakira, but I prefer Suerte over the -nglish version. The chorus
in the *panish version is so much better.
*ongs that I like to listen to when Im feeling a bit out of sorts are Breathe e by *ia (I
remember reading she had a mental breakdown shortly after recording the vocals. Im
not sure why thats relevant, but I like learning about things like that) Something to
Belie"e in by A5ualung (the song is one of the few non0classical songs that I have that
includes a harp, which is why I like it) Stop 0his 0rain by 3ohn ayer (I know, hes a
total d0bag, but I still like his music), Landslide by 4leetwood ac, or 0he Show by
8enka.
4or happier songs, I suggest I#ll a&e a an out o1 You, I +ust *an#t Wait to Be King'
and $uddle )ormation4
If you want to listen to a song about not being able to sleep and driving around, listen to
(oad (unner by the odern 8overs (Another fun fact$ 1oadrunner mentions listening to
A radio, because when it was written, A radio was a lot better to listen to)
I put a couple songs that I like to listen to if I want to feel alive. These include Open
Your 5yes by *now Batrol, and Sweet Disposition by Temper Trap. Swing Li1e 2way by
1ise Against doesnt make me feel alive e.actly, but it makes me think about my friends
(including you) so I hope you like that I included it.
I included three songs that make me think of airports and traveling. They are Bruised by
3acks anne5uin, Wheel by 3ohn ayer (He wrote this before becoming totally
douchey, though) and 5pic Last Song (Cne of my favorite songs ever) by ,oes it Cffend
2ou, 2eahG The song Be in Want by eghan Ton6es mentions flying in a plane, but the
song itself doesnt remind me of traveling, though.
y current obsessions are -llie Goulding, and Swimming by 4lorence and the achine,
6ust to let you know.
And if you by any chance miss college or me, I suggest listening to I#ll Be Seeing You. I
put the Tony :ennett version on the playlist. Ive kind of been obsessed with this song
since my age was in the single digits, and Im a big fan of American *ongbook *tandards
in general. *hristmas 06 by *low +lub is also a good option if youre looking for
something thats slower. I like *low +lub because they write cracky lyrics that I find
entertaining. 4or something more upbeat, and very %ill (I feel like Im channeling
,obby. $arry 7otter and the *hamber o1 Secrets was on TH last night, and I watched
the whole thing on A:+ even though I already own the ,H,) try I Wanna Dance With
Somebody by !hitney Housten or $uddle )ormation by the Go Team. 0his *harming
an by The *miths is a good one too, if you want to listen to a man talk about his bicycle
breaking down and getting picked up by a charming man (orrisey, the guy who wrote
the song, wanted to use old0fashioned words, so thats why theres lyrics like Dstitch to
wearE).
I know a lot of this isnt your usual music, and you probably already have music for all of
the possible moods you could be in, but I thought Id give you a feel for some of the
songs. I apologi'e for all the grammar mistakes and the e.cessive use of parenthesis as
well as the wordiness and length of this Iguide. I hope you like some of it, and en6oyed
reading it.
Ch, and if you want to work out and pretend youre in an J&s movie (which I totally
dont e"er do) I suggest listening to :ill +ontis %onna )ly Now. (2ou could also listen
to this right before getting on the plane, but unless youre running through the airport, I
think it loses some of the epicness)
8ove,
Gill
B.*.
I thought Id share some of what I have written in my notebook under potential
songwriting ideas.
0 geese
0 comatose man
0 that third child whos a bit dim and doesnt live up to e.pectations
0 how much periods suck 0 start off as an DI hate you songE about never coming back
0some delusional stalker song
There is a bit of *omatose an written. I guess I en6oy writing inappropriate9offensive
songs. Heres what I have so far.
*omatose man'
Why does no one understand
$ow important you are to me?
$ow I lo"e you so
I#ll ne"er let you go
Or e"er pull the cord
Thats only one of a few terrible songs Ive written this summer. Theres also Stupid
Bug, which is another song about me killing an innocent living being, and a good bye
song that has a verse that sounds like its talking about se., but is really 6ust about
watching film noir movies.
I know, theres something wrong with me.
Anyways, I hope you have a lovely time in *pain, because you deserve it. Take lots of
pictures.
