Zakes Mda talks to Oxford University Press Southern Africa about his book The Madonna of

Madonna of Excelsior Part I

The small town of Excelsior in 1971 saw fourteen black women and five white men arrested
under apartheid's Immorality Act which forbade sex between blacks and whites. The saga
attracted media attention all over the world. The director of The Madonna of Excelsior, Roel
Twijnstra, journeyed to the dorp with his entire cast and crew finding that not much has
changed. The play, adapted from the lauded novel by Zakes Mda, gives voice to the
complexities of veiled truths and unresolved history. cueTV gets director Roel Twijnstrato
