Lesson 1

How to write a Procedural Text

Play the learning object: Lets make a mask
(TALE). As the procedure plays, have students
follow it and make the mask.

*Deconstruction text structure

Display the headings Title, Goal, Materials
and Steps on IWB. Remind students of the
structure of a procedure as the titles are put
into position on the IWB.

Display procedures for Lets make a mask
on the IWB. Re-read the text revisiting the
purpose of each section. Point out that the
materials are presented in a list.

Identify the steps and note the numbers used
for sequencing. Link the final step to the goal.

Lesson 3

Provide students with a
blank procedure template
for making a mask, along
with pictures for each step.
Children write the aim and
materials in the spaces
provided. Paste pictures in
the correct order and write
a sentence for each step.

Lesson 1

*Reread Make a lion mask
procedure and have students identify
and highlight the verbs.

*Students can write a simple
procedure for washing hands, using

Lesson 2

*Making slime - Display various recipes for
making slime (Notebook file created for this)
and have students identify the main parts of
the procedure and note importance of pictures
in helping us understand the procedure. Point
out and discuss the fact that verbs are written
in present tense.

adding the list of ingredients and procedural

Students make the slime and teacher takes

Students use the template provided to
write the steps for sneaking their
monster into school. Encourage
creative thinking.
Lesson 2

*Model the writing of a procedure
explaining how to put on
sunscreen.

In workbooks, students turn this
information into a procedure.

Lesson 3

Provide students with the three
ingredients needed to make sherbet
(citric acid, icing sugar, bicarbonate of
soda, jelly crystals) and explain the
functions of each element.

only using a small spoon, until they
have the perfect recipe. Students write

*Students are given the investigative
task Ice-cream in a bag. With a
partner, they must look online to
determine if ice cream really can be
made in a bag, and what the best
recipe is for it.
Students must take into consideration
Australian conversions, ease of
recipe and equipment available.

Lesson 2
(Swap Literacy groups to Thursday)

*Using research from earlier in the
week, students work with their
partner to write a procedure for
making ice cream in a bag.
Students must include all necessary
materials as the teacher will be
choosing one for the class to
follow.
Reiterate the grammatical functions
and layout of a procedural text.
Lesson 3

Teacher has necessary ingredients
prepared. Students take it in turns to
follow the recipe and make their ice
cream in a bag. Eat and enjoy!
