HSDPA 42 Mbps (Dual-Cell HSDPA
+ 64QAM)

RU20
Feature ID(s): RAN1906
HSDPA peak rates up to 42 Mbps
User rate and capacity gains up to 100%
In Dual-Cell HSDPA one UE can be allocated
HSDPA channels from two adjacent carriers
Dual-Cell HSDPA with 64QAM allows bit rates
up to 42 Mbps
Compared to 21 Mbps HSDPA
Dual-Cell HSDPA user rate gain 100%
in low load (double spectrum)
Dual-Cell HSDPA capacity gain 20%
in full load (improved scheduling)
In real networks clearly above 20% capacity
gain depending on the traffic profile
Gains are achieved also at cell edge
Scheduling gain comes from de-correlation of fading on both frequencies
Single Flexi RF Module Triple supports configuration of Dual-Cell HSDPA 2+2+2
(70W /sector)

Higher HSDPA peak rates up to 21Mbps
Feature ID(s): RAN1643
64QAM improves throughput of UEs with good downlink channel
Minor gain in average rate and cell capacity *):
5%-10% in loaded network
~15% in low other cell interference (e.g. microcell)
Dual receiver UEs have better performance with 64QAM

*) Capacity gains assume 100% 64QAM UE penetration. Full buffer traffic model.

MIMO 28 Mbps
RU20 I-HSPA Rel.4
MIMO increases user peak rates up to 28 Mbps
Feature ID(s): RAN1642
MIMO (Multiple Input - Multiple Output):
Multipath propagation is harnessed to send two parallel data streams
2x2 MIMO peak rate is 28Mbps with 16QAM
High rates require good radio conditions and multipath
Network level gains require significant MIMO terminal base

Throughput gain
Less packet processing
RLC overhead
RLC PDU size is determined based on
the RLC SDU size, i.e. IP packet
No RLC layer padding needed
5-10% throughput gain expected from
the reduced RLC overhead
Less RLC processing both in UE and
network side for all HSDPA bit rates

Continuous Packet Connectivity
Longer battery life, higher capacity and
better user experience
Feature ID(s): RAN1644
Continuous Packet Connectivity (CPC) includes
Uplink DPCCH gating: major gain in UL cell throughput with high user amounts, major
gain in UE battery life, CS over HSPA enabler
Downlink DRX : additional gain in UE battery life (F-DPCH required)
Lower mobile power consumption
Higher capacity due to less interference transmitted
Benefits both voice and data over HSPA

CS Voice over HSPA
RU20
Feature ID(s): RAN1689
I-HSPA Rel.4
50% increase in UE talk time, 50% faster call set-ups,
50% more radio capacity
Compared to CS voice over DCH
CS voice over HSPA impacts only RAN: HSPA transport channels carry CS voice
Uplink gating and downlink DRX are used according to Release 7 Continuous
packet connectivity (CPC)
No changes to voice ecosystem: CS core, roaming, charging, etc. remain the same
Smooth inter-working between 2G and 3G with existing CS inter-system handover

Fractional DPCH
Feature ID(s): RAN1201
Fractional DPCH shares the DL dedicated code channel carrying L1 signaling
(TPC bits) of HSDPA users
DL L1 signaling of up to 10 HSDPA users are multiplexed on the same code channel
HSDPA throughput can be increased
Highest gains in case of high number of users (e.g. >60-80 voice on HSPA users)
Without F-DPCH, 15 codes available for HS-PDSCH only when 1 or 2 HSDPA users in
the cell
Less control overhead in DL
Increased HSDPA throughput

Fast Dormancy (Rel8)
RU20
Feature ID(s): RAN2136
Fast Dormancy is an optional feature in 3GPP Rel8 for UEs
UEs supporting this feature can be controlled by network and yet save
batteries
New release cause for Signaling Connection Release Indication message can be
used by UEs to indicate that active PS data transfer has concluded
Upon reception of this message the RNC triggers state transition to
Cell_PCH instead of letting the UE to go to idle mode
URA_PCH state can be selected for fast moving UEs
Cell_PCH has a very low battery consumption, comparable to idle state
HSPA setup from Cell_PCH to Cell_DCH is faster and requires much less
signaling compared to starting from idle state

Reduced signaling load and faster packet call setups
