Top 5: Places to Eat

DECEMBER 2013
MILWAUKEE WAY

from the editor

his issue that youre holding in your

hands is the first of Milwaukee Way. Its
a remarkable acheivement for me, if I do
say so myself. After many years trying to find
my niche, I recently decided to start my own
firm. Ive had an unbelievable amount of passion for writing and design so why not combine the two and start my own magazine? Its
particularly exciting given the current economy, which has left many magazines struggling. What our success here at Milwaukee
Way tells me is that even in the toughest of
times, products can not only survive but also
thrive - as long as they are useful and relevant. And these days, what could be more
meangingful for young adults in their 20s and
30s to know than how to navigate a beautiful
city, such as Milwaukee? My initial thought
was: There are numerous people who are fed
up with their professional lives because of a
lack of their personal one. I surveyed over
two-thousand individuals in that age range
and over 77% did not know the large array
of activities Milwaukee has to offer. Well, Im
proud to deliver the Milwaukee Way of Life
through this December edition. Our December issue offers insight on where to eat, visit and go out. For many ways to keep yourself well-fed, fit, more energized and less
stressed, please read on. Theres so much to
learn about and be inspired by in this issue
that we have a feeling youll be referring to
it again and again. Whatever you do, dont
recycle it too soon - living green is great,
but youll want this one around for months to
come. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Q: Why is the mascot of Wisconsin a badger?

A: The teams nickname, Badgers, was borrowed
from the state of Wisconsin. The territory was dubbed
the Badger State, not because of animals in the region, but rather an association with lead miners in the
1820s. Prospectors came to the state looking for minerals. Without shelter in the winter, the miners had to
live like badgers in tunnels burrowed into hillsides.

Bucky Badger is the mascot for the University
of Wisconsin-Madison. Bucky Badger first appeared
in 1949. He is also known as Buckingham U Badger
and he wears a striped sweater with the letter W
printed on it.

Q:

Im going to my first-ever visit to Madison this

weekend. Do you have any ideas where to go?

A: Of course! You cant go wrong visiting the best

Big 10 school in the nation! If youre looking for something specific to do, theres a UW-Madison mens basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Kohl Center.
Tip-off will be at 1:15 p.m. CT. Go Badgers!

OUT ON
THE TOWN

ts Friday night. You just

got off work and have the
weekend free. Youre tired
of that monotonous life you lead five days
a week. Its time for a night out on the town.
The upside: you dont have to be up at 6
a.m. tomorrow. The downside: you have
nowehere to go and there are several bars
open. Where are you going to go?
If youre looking for a chill yet memorable night, you should always start with dinner. If youre looking for a cheap, elegant
and beautiful restaurant, go to Maders in
Milwaukee. Its a perfect German Cuisine
that will fulfill your expectations. With all of
that drinking youll be partaking in later in
the night, youll thank yourself later. I highly recommend Maders most famous dish,
the Pork Shank. Its a wonderfully delicious
skinless shank with an apple demi-glaze.
Its erved with sauerkraut and red potatoes; you just cant go wrong with it!
Once dinner is finished, you would go
down to ComdedySportz in downtown Milwaukee. If you want to grab some drinks
while having a few laughs, its definitely

the place to go. ComedySportz is an all

Improv, all suggestion based comedy
show, fun for all ages. Two teams of Actletes get suggestions from the audience,
create scenes onstage, and compete for
your laughs! You decide what each scene
is about, you decide who you think is funnier, and you decide who wins! If you havent guessed yet - the most important part
of the show is YOU!
Next youre ready for cocktails, but you
want a little bit of mystery. So you head
down to Safe House, down by the lake.
The Safe House in Milwaukee is one of a
kind, unique, difficult to describe! Many
say this spy haven can be only be experienced, not defined. Its licensed to thrill!
Now one interesting thing about Safe
House is that there is a password required
if you arrive after 8 p.m. Hint: Control never turned away agents on the run because
they didnt know the password.
If you want to continue on with your
night with some cocktails at a fine lounge,
then Bryants is the place to be, especially
on a Friday or Saturday night. Bryants is
Milwaukees Oldest Cocktail Lounge. Indulge yourself with exotic lighting, plush

velvet walls, and tunes from the vintage

McIntosh powered audio system. Cozy
up in a booth while sipping on a classic
signature cocktail and enjoying the finest
service in Milwaukee.
Now youve had all of these drinks and
you want to avoid being hungover. Wheres
the best place to eat around 2 a.m.? Ians
Pizza. Hands. Down. With two locations in
Milwaukee, one on the east side and one
downtown, theres no excuse. Chance is,
though, that youre downtown if you were
just at your last bar before heading home.
After deciding you want some pizza before
heading home, you can choose from over
13 different choices. One thing thats cool
about Ians Pizza is that you can purchase
it by the slice, which is as cheap as $2.75.
I guarantee if you have a night like this,
it will definitely be one that will provide
memories for years to come!

he experience of attending a Brewers

game starts as soon as the car is parked.
Just like a Packer or Badger game, everyone comes together as if it were a family
gathering. The parking lot, weather it be
general or preferred, is one big party. The
smell puts anyone in the mood for baseball.
Bag toss and other tailgating games are
common. Everyone is decked out in Brewer
gear; if you own any Brewer attire, wear it.
Whats nice is that you can walk around the
entire park yet at the same time not miss
a single pitch. Fan favorites include a wide
range of activities but the sausage race
ranks high. Great energy, great fans, beautiful exterior, great seating no matter where
you sit; this is an awesome park to see a

RESTAURANT Picks

ilwaukee is beginning to earn its keep

when it comes to dining. As restaurants
continue to step up their games in terms
of artful, fresh seasonal dishes, its getting more
and more enjoyable to dine out. But, its also getting more and more difficult to choose favorites.
Fortunately, there are plenty of spots that do deserve acclaim; And I hope I can capture at least a
glimpse of them by sharing my picks.
Karl Ratzschs
Karl Ratzschs roots go back to 1904. Its hard
to walk into this Old World dining room and not
imagine the generations of Milwaukeeans who
dined here on German dishes before us. Hope
they enjoyed the crisp-skinned roast goose and
duck as much as I did, with sturdy red cabbage
and wild and white rice on the side, along with
dressing (heavy on sage). The green pepper
added to the pickle-onion-bacon filling is unconventional, but the beef rouladen is delicious. Its
served with tender spaetzle and red cabbage.
Youve come this far; might as well have apple
strudel for dessert. You wouldnt be the first Milwaukeean to do so.

tiny curls of cucumber, compressed melon and

heat of chile; amazing rabbit roulade filled with
carrot and leek and wrapped in brilliant green
savoy cabbage; and olive oil cake, layered with
lemon curd and topped with blackberry gelee, so
light it seemed to defy physics, served with blackberry ice cream.
Kopps
In a crowded and diverse field of desserts, Kopps
came out tasting sweet victory. A Milwaukee tradition for more than 60 years, the king of custard
resoundingly defeated the rest of its competition,
including the former two-time winner of best dessert, Honeypie.

Cafe Benelux
If youre looking for a great view, the Cafe Benelux rooftop patio is fantastic when the weather
is warm. Of the three locations in the Milwaukee
area, the Wauwatosa locations menu is a favorite
