and her students, this project would not have been possible.

long-term projects run anywhere from six months and over.
In all of the projects of The Build-A-School Foundation, the goal is to improve the quality and

Project Number: 2
Project Partner (recipient): The School of St Jude
Project Start Date: May 2014
Project End Date: June 2014
Project Details:
In May 2014, The Build-A-School Foundation chose The School of St Jude in Tanzania as the
project partner for its second Short-term Project. The Build-A-School Foundation in conjunction
with classes 6D and 6E of Kelvin Grove State College raised $885.80 to provide 22 students with
medical and welfare support for an entire year. As outlined by The School of St Jude, the
22students will be provided with medical support for those times when students are unwell or for
when there are welfare issues at home. Nurses and welfare staffs are ready to help with
medical supplies and in extreme cases, provide essential items such as food and water.
Project Partner Details:
The School of St Jude is run by seven directors and is based in Arusha, Tanzania. The School of
St Jude supports disadvantaged children in Arusha and surrounding areas to attend school who
are living in moderate to severe poverty. As of May 2014, 1800 children and families currently
benefit from the work of The School of St Judes.
Poverty in Tanzania is endemic. Ranked 199 out of 229 nations in the world for GDP per capita,
as a nation Tanzania is unable to provide its children with a quality education. The government
school system is overstretched, under-resourced, and produces poor educational outcomes for
Tanzanian society.
The School of St Jude provides a free, high-quality education to children who due to poverty
and social pressures would otherwise be unlikely to complete their schooling. Drawn from
families who often live on less than $1.25 per day, the pupils of The School of St Jude are
shining examples of what students can achieve when they are given the opportunity to receive
a quality education.
Since 2002, The School of St Jude have added 150 students to the school each year and in 2015
the first senior class from The School of St Jude will graduate from Form 6. The School of St
Jude is working towards a model that supports its students through tertiary education and
completing the mission to create the next generation of Tanzanian leaders.

Estimated Impact on Community:
Project one resulted in the direct support of 22 students residing in the Arusha area. The
School of St Jude creates a ripple effect within the surrounding community by employing local
people, buying local produce and supporting local students to attend school. The School of St
Jude's mission is 'Fighting Poverty Through Education' which is achieved by selecting the
brightest and poorest of Arusha and is reflected in their essential selection criteria. To gain a
place at St Jude's, a student must:
- Be currently enrolled in the specified class at a government school within Arusha;
- Have not repeated a class while at school;
- Be within the right age range, and,
- Pass the poverty criteria established during house visits
One child per family is accepted into the school to enable as many families as possible the
chance to benefit from a high quality education that they would not otherwise have access to.
