The context is a mixed ability class for Year 5 primary school
pupils in an English
class in Malaysia. The teacher has decided to begin her class with a brief 30
minutes
"pop quiz" consisting of 5 comprehension
questions that require short
written answers. The quiz will:

point for a teacher-led discussion on each of the items.
Results of the quiz will not be recorded in the teacher's record book.

were quiet, the other pupils were making a tot of noise. Ms Rhombus tried to
get the pupils' attention but none of them listened to her. Then, Ms Rhombus
gave the pupils a warning and left the classroom. The
pupils waited for a while.
When Ms Rhombus did not return to the classroom, a few
pupils decided to
look for her. Ms Rhombus left a trail for them. The
pupils followed the clues
and solved some mathematical
problems. Finally, they found her in the
gymnasium. Ms Rhombus rewarded the pupils who found her.

used by the three teachers.
Puan Salina is a teacher whose students' writing scores are
made up of a sum of the separate scores and is often a weighted
sum developed after multiplying each score by numbers
representing the relative importance of the features she wishes
to emphasize.
Mr. Tan's students'writing scores are arrived at by comparing
individual student's essay to model essays representing good,
fair, and poor responses to the assignment. He refuses to break
down his students'essays into separate problems
like
punctuation
and paragraphing
during assessment, but base their
grades on his immediate 'sense
of the whole'.
Mrs. Ranjit establishes standardisation by limiting the length of
her assessrnent for example, she underlines every mistake of the
first 250 words. Then she quantifies
the essay Conectness
score by using the 250 words as the numerator of a fraction and
the sum of the error scores as the denominator.
