AP Language
AP English Language and Composition Course focuses on the development and
revision of evidence-based analytic and argumentative writing and the rhetorical
analysis of nonfiction texts. The AP English Language and Composition course is
designed to help students become skilled readers and writers through engagement of
the material. (AP College Board)
Students will need to
Compose essays about a variety of subjects
Write that proceeds through several stages or drafts, with revision aided by teacher
and peers
Write informally which helps students become aware of themselves as writers and
the techniques employed by other writers
Write expository, analytical, and argumentative compositions based on readings
representing a variety of prose styles and genres
Read nonfiction selected to give students opportunities to identify and explain an
authors use of rhetorical strategies and techniques
Analyze graphics and visual images both in relation to written texts and as
alternative forms of text themselves
Develop research skills and the ability to evaluate, use, and cite primary and
secondary sources
Conduct research and write argumentative papers in which students present an
argument of their own that includes the analysis and synthesis of ideas from an array
of sources
Cite sources using a recognized editorial style
Revise their work to develop a wide-ranging vocabulary, tone, organization, and
sentence structure.

According to the course objectives listed above, the app presents
approximately 30 passages with 10 questions for each passage. The app could use
editorial information about the various documentation styles available for students as
well as the analysis of graphics and visual images. In order for students to really
benefit from the app, I feel it needs to include examples and instructions. One of the
main components of this course is the composition of an essay. An instructive tutorial
would give students another aid. A structured outline would demonstrate for the
students and provide a visual aid. Definitions of each type of composition would give
students a reference guide.
