Styles of Management: What Kind of Manager Will You Be?

Section 1) Introduction
The two styles of management are essential for decision-making effectively but the
most important and contemporary style will be collaboration rather than command and
control. The reason is that in the beginning of my career as HR Administrative Assistant, I
have faced more on command and control, which was overwhelming and stressing work pace
and achievements. ometimes, as a manager, we have to blend the both or choose one of it to
lead staff members to make things easier and particularly decision that affects staff members
directly practiced when I was Training !oordinator and managing trainers. uch discussion
and conceptual information included in the later section. "oreover, it is depending on kind of
team that I will be leading such as members without prior e#perience and knowledge seeking
will re$uire command and control while e#perienced staff members are suitable for leading
collaboratively. I like collaboration style of management. The common management style is
command and control for fresher but there should be blend of collaboration so staff members
will participate and get involved.
According to %ee, "., and &urdue 'niversity, ())*
1
, collaboration is occurring when
there are two more people working together for achieving common work product, result and
goal. +n the other hand, during collaboration, it enables iteration and feedback that will be
providing opportunities for team members by revising and reviewing work of each other,
learning from others, making changes reflecting productivity, and producing product that is
better and greater

.
Section 2) Kind of Manager
The suitable and kind of manager should be collaborative leader, which is method or
process that is for guiding diversified group of people in solution finding to comple#
problems that will be affecting them all
3
. It is using inclusive and supportive methods for
ensuring that all staff members affected by changes due to new decisions then they should be
part of the change or decision-making process

(.,. !ollaborative "anagement tyle
/ot all the managers will be possessing skills in leading and managing staff members
collaboratively. All managers will need staff members following them but some of the
managers will not be willing to share power such as authority of decision-making with their
staff members. It is important to engage others while working together
5
. Therefore, manager
should be able to adapt according to staff members style to follow that is reflecting
organi:ational environment such as leading collaboratively even though it is command and
control working environment.
(.(. !ollaboration ;ecision-"aking

;ecision-making enabled with collaboration systems will be providing staff members
with iteration and feedback that are helping them in identification of several alternatives of
solution and making choice by them with discussion of pros and cons of each solution, which
manager alone cannot do it
6
. A decision that affects all staff members and their work process
will not be effective when managers alone will make the decision for changes. Therefore,
there will be difficulties in planning and implementing such decision for change or
improvement.
Section 3) Conclusion
In conclusion, there is no specific or perfect management style but manager should
adapt to collaboration and blend it with command and control for some decisions not
affecting staff members until members adapt to collaboration style. /one will be aware about
collaboration style because some of the managers are not willing to share authority power in
decision-making. The recommendation is that new manager working in command and control
style of management environment and wanting to bring improvement with collaboration style
of management then she should blend the both until staff members adapt to the new style of
management. The failure to do so will result in creating working conditions and environment
that will be confusing and leading to unwanted results where her boss and staff members will
become against her style of management.
