Petroleum Process Flowsheet
The fol l owi ng i l l ustrati on shows the petrol eum process fl owsheet you wi l l work
wi th throughout thi s book:
Problem Definition: Crude Fractionation Train
The process consi sts of the fol l owi ng steps:
1. The process feed (MI XCRUDE), consi sti ng of a bl end of two crude oi l s (OI L-1,
see Tabl e 1.1; OI L-2, see Tabl e 1.2), goes to the prefl ash furnace.
2. The prefl ash tower (PREFLASH) removes l i ght gases and some naphtha from
the parti al l y vapori zed feed.
3. Prefl ash bottoms (CDU-FEED) are further processed i n the crude di sti l l ati on
uni t (CDU). The CDU consi sts of a crude uni t furnace and an atmospheri c
tower. Fi rst, the crude uni t furnace parti al l y vapori zes the bottoms from the
prefl ash. Then the atmospheri c tower separates the prefl ash bottoms i nto fi ve
cuts:

Heavy naphtha (HNAPHTHA)

Kerosene (KEROSENE)

Di esel (DI ESEL)

Atmospheri c gas oi l (AGO)

Reduced crude (RED-CRD)

4. Reduced crude goes to the vacuum di sti l l ati on uni t (VDU) for further
fracti onati on under vacuum condi ti ons. The VDU consi sts of a vacuum uni t
furnace and vacuum tower. The vacuum tower produces the fol l owi ng
addi ti onal cuts:
