Personal Statement

My parents hard work and determination have made my life much less difficult than theirs. I live
in a house were education is as important as food. We need food to nurture our body, but education
nurtures our mind and teaches us how to survive in a complex world. ven now, in their later years, my
parents attend school in order to have a better !uality of life and not be considered "i#norant$.
%ccordin# to some people, I am "low income$ and "disadvanta#ed$. I, however, feel that I am
rich and fortunate. I am happy because I have both of my parents and no physical disability. &ortunately,
my parents have learned how to mana#e their money and can provide for the necessities of life. %ll we
have to worry about are our studies.
I have two older brothers and my parents have enormous expectations of them. %s far back as I
can remember, it was different for me. &rom the moment that we arrived in our adopted country of the
'nited States, we had to become skilled in another lan#ua#e and adapt to a new environment. It was too
much for a child. (onse!uently, my #rades were not the same. )hey dropped tremendously, but my
parents did not demand as much from me as they did from my older brothers. I still remember my mom
tellin# me that as lon# as I passed and did my best, she was satisfied. I was little and could not understand
why my mom did not expect as much from me as from my brothers. Maybe it was because they were
older or perhaps because they were males. )ryin# to imitate my brothers motivated me to do better. *ittle
by little my #rades started to improve, until I was able to surpass what my brothers had accomplished.
&amily and school have always been my most important priorities. Since I could not stand to be
idle and did not en+oy stayin# at home doin# nothin#. I did community service and became involved in
extra curricular activities at school. When I reached my senior year and put my resume to#ether, I was
ama,ed at all I had accomplished and was ready for what lay ahead.
I am a woman of few words and believe my actions will speak louder than anythin# that I say.
I plan to attend the 'niversity of )exas at l Paso and earn a bachelors de#ree in en#ineerin#. I know that
I am capable of accomplishin# my #oals because I am determined and prepared to work as hard as is
re!uired.
