Project Summary
BMC CM Patch Management automates the collection, analysis,
auditing, and deployment of security and functional patches for applications and
operating systems. This solution also provides a powerful repository for patches across
different operating systems.
The Patch Management application contains several components, each handling different
aspects of patch management.
PatchSource : Patch Source is the BMC Configuration Automation for Clients application
that lets you access third-party and vendor patches.
Patch Manager : Patch Manager is a BMC Configuration Automation for Clients
application that lets you collect, organize, test, and publish patches.
Patch Manager enables you to:

o Automatically download patch information from third-party vendors into a

repository within your organization.
o Group patches by their function, the operating system or application they
apply to, or any other characteristic.

o Test patch deployments and simulate how they affect a given machine
before they are installed.
o Target endpoints and distribute patches across your organization's intranet
or the Internet.
o Automatically determine the sequence of installation actions and avoid
costly errors by considering the dependency relationships among patches
before they are installed.
o View reports that detail the success or failure of your patch distribution on
each endpoint.

Patch Service : Patch Service is the agent that controls patch installations on an
endpoint. It determines the following behavior:

o What patches must be installed and when.

o The installation order.
o The commands that must be run before, during, and after installation.
o Whether installation was successful.
o If and when patch-related reboots are necessary.
