Standard #2: Learning Differences

The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and
communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to
meet high standards.
Name of Artifact: Multicultural Education Redefined
Date: January 2014
Course: EDUC 255: Multicultural Teaching
Brief Description:
For this assignment I first stated what my initial definition of multicultural
education was, and explained why I thought this. I then gave my new definition of
multicultural education, and gave my reasoning for my change in opinion, and also
gave some specific examples of what I would do in my classroom to give my
students an education involving lessons of different cultures and their
backgrounds/practices/traditions.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of InTASC Standards #2, Learning
Differences, I selected to include my assignment Multicultural Education
Redefined, because it gives an honest first opinion of what I thought multicultural
education was before learning or reading anything about the topic, and then gives a
new definition after my views shifted. During this shift of opinion, I started to see
the importance of learning about other cultures, as well as teaching this knowledge
to my future students. Through understanding diverse cultures and individual
differences, we can prevent a lot of hate and prejudice in schools towards students
who are socially labeled as being different.
