GUIDELINES FOR BUSINESS NAME APPLICATION

1. A business name represents a style or topic that is used to

recognise the identity of the business carried out.
2. A business name can be categorised into two (2) types :
a) Personal name as stated in the identity card is not required
to apply for approval of the business name.

b) &rade (ame is the name of the proposed business and must
obtain prior approval from the "egistrar of )usiness at

Procedure
1. /omplete the )usiness (ame Approval 1orm (1orm P(A.22)
with three (3) proposed business names. )usiness names will
be approved according to priority and will be attached to the
(ew )usiness "egistration 1orm (1orm A) at the counter.
2. &he person responsible$ either the business owner or partner$
must submit the application to the counter or vi a online at
the %%# e4 .odgement services in the %%#5s website at
ww w .s sm .co m .m y
Additional Information
1. )usiness name should not be too long and not more than
fifty (67) characters including spaces between words.
2. &he use of numbers$ sign and symbols are not allowed as part
of a business name.
3. 8a9etted words under 8overnment 8a9ette (o. :1; dated 37
<anuary 1==:$ 8a9ette Amendments of 2771 and the names
that administratively controlled under the /ompanies Act 1=;6
will also be considered controlled for a business name.

2. )esides obtaining approval from %%# for the use of the words
(urseries$ /are /entre$ ,indergarten$ &uition /entres$ /olleges
and %chools as part of business name must obtain the approval
of business names$ business owners must also obtain written
permission from other relevant agencies prior to registering the
business.
6. )usiness name registered must be in accordance with the type
of business.
;. &he business name registered cannot be altered or changed
once the business is registered.

(c) contains any word suggesting connection with any Asean$
/ommonwealth or other foreign government or with the 0nited
(ations or any other international organisationA
(d) contains the word ?/hartered@ or any words suggesting
connection with any %ociety or body incorporated by "oyal

(f) contains any word that is blasphemous or li+ely to be

(h) contains any word that is offensive to any race or religion.
(2) &he "egistrar with the consent of the #inister may restrict the
usage of any other names which in his opinion is undesirable and the
"egistrar shall cause such names to be published in the 8a9ette.

Pursuant to section 22(1) and 321 /ompanies Act 1=;6$ the #inister
directs the "egistrar of /ompanies not to accept for registration any
name of a company or a foreign company that is a name or a name
