1. Pump Station

The design of a sewer system must suggest an engineered system of sewers and pump stations,
complete with all appurtenant facilities. The system should be practicable, economically feasible,
and all components must be located to minimize the costs of installation, operation, and
maintenance. Here is an attempt to design a pump station. The nethod is adapted from Water
Works Engineering and Wastewater Treatment Concepts and Design Approach by G.L Karia,
R.A. Christian.

The daily flowrate is Q(d) = 5000 m
3
/d

Step A

(a) Computation of maximum an minimum sewage flow
Q (Avg) = 5000/2 = 2500 m
3
/d
Peaking factor should be between 1.5 3 (G.L Karia, 2012)
Assume an average of 2.25 as peaking factor.
Q (max) = 2500*2.25 = 5625 m
3
/d = 0.0651 m
3
/s
Assume minimum factor to be between 0.1 and 0.3 (G.L Karia, 2012). Assume an average of
0.2.
Q(min) = 2500*0.2 = 500 m
3
/d = 0.005787 m
3
/s
(b) Design of rising main
Assuming 0.75 m/s as the flow through velocity in the rising main, the cross sectional
area of the rising main at peak flow,
A
x
= flow/ velocity = 0.0651/0.75 = 0.0868 m
2

The diameter of the rising main, d
R
is determined by the equation,
d
R =

d
R =

= 0.332 m
Providing a rising main of 0.35 m diameter.
