3 sides-Blue
4 equal sides-Yellow
2 short sides and 2 long sides-
Green
6 vertices-Red
No Sides or vertices-Orange
4 sides, 2 are parallel and 2 are

Defining attributes
-Plane shapes are flat NOT fat.
-They have sides (edges) and vertices
(points/corners).
Non Defining Attributes
~Color
~Size

~Provide students with pattern block mats (w/lines) of your choice along with
the 7 color crayons that are needed.
~Allow students to look at their mats and discuss with their shoulder partner
how many different types of shapes make up their picture.
~Discuss defining and non-defining attributes of plane shapes.
~Teacher will read directions to students, giving them plenty of time to color in
all the shapes with that particular defining attribute (Adjust where necessary
according to the mat you pick).
~After completion of lined pattern block mats, put students in pairs. Pass out
shape mats without lines and pattern blocks and have students work with their
partner to find ways of filling in the shapes using the blocks provided.
~As an option you may limit how many of each shape they may use.
