IMPORTANT POINTS
Medicine or Physiology:
Three Scientists have won the Nobel Prize for medicine or physiology
after discovering how cells precisely transport material.
Prof James Rothman, from Yale University, found proteins embedded in
the vesicles which act as the docking mechanism meaning the cargo is
released in the correct location.
Prof Randy Schekman discovered the genes which regulated the
transport system in yeast.
Prof Thomas Sudhof, made breakthroughs in how the transport system
works in the brain so that neurotrans mitters are released at the precise
time.

Randy Schekman
Thomas Sudhof
Physics:
Two European scientists won the Nobel Prize in physics for describing the
Higgs boson, a theoretical particle that may explain where mass comes from
and advances mans understanding of how the world is constructed.
The boson is named after Higgs, one of six scientists who devised a working
theory of how elemental particles achieve mass in a three-month period in
1964. Englert had been the first to publish the theory a month earlier.
The award to Higgs and Englert was for the theoretical discovery of a
mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of
subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery
of the predicted fundamental particle by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at
CERNs large Hadron Collider.

Three US scientists won the Nobel Prize for chemistry
for pioneering work on computer programmes that
simulate complex chemical processes and have
accelerated progress in areas from drugs to solar
energy.
The European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN is an international
organization whose purpose is to operate the worlds largest particle physics laboratory
established in 1954.

ECONOMY:
Three US Economists achieved Nobel in Economics this year.
Eugene F. Fama and Lars Peter Hansen, both professors at the University
of Chicago, and Robert J. Shiller of yale University have been pioneers in
studying the behaviour of asset prices using large amounts of detailed
financial data.
While nobody can perfectly predict stock price movements, the three
economists, through their own independent research, have been
instrumental in providing those crucial nuggets of information that have
changed the way both academics and practioners view financial markets.
FOOD BILL PASSED:
The Lok Sabha on 26th August 2013 approved the Food Security
