Lesson Topic: Sacraments - Confirmation
Recent Prior Experience: Students in 4 Blue have learnt about the sacrament of Baptism and undertaken the sacrament of reconciliation. Majority of students within the
class have undertaken reconciliation in the local school Parish, have been baptised and are planning on doing their confirmation at the schools local Parish. This key
learning area will allow students to better understand the three sacraments of initiation, develop students knowledge on the first sacrament of baptism and allow students
to thoroughly understand the second sacrament of confirmation and its symbols and rituals and why Catholics undertake confirmation.Students have extensive knowledge
on Baptism and its rituals and symbols and have some knowledge (learnt over the past 4 weeks) on confirmation and its symbols and rituals. This is the third week of the
five week unit.

- Be able to identify confirmation as the second of the three sacraments
of initiation


- Be able to identify two of the three initiation sacraments and some of
their rituals and symbols


- Be able to explain in detail the meaning of confirmation and its symbols
and rituals

Intro (8 mins):

T will begin lesson with a Godly Play box on Jesus Baptism

T will instruct Ss to sit around in a circle and be quiet and respectful

T will ask Ss a series of I wonder questions

T will give Ss time to think and reflect on the I wonder questions

Main (15 mins):

T will create a class brainstorm with Ss of what they know on
Baptism

T will ask Ss to identify and name the symbols and rituals used
within Baptism

Students will be able use the brainstorm and
class discussion to refresh their memory on
previously learnt knowledge (learn in week
2) on Baptism and the rituals and symbols
used within the first sacrament of initiation

are three sacraments of initiation and why
and how Baptism is the first sacrament of
initiation and its importance in the three

Students learn in Baptism we begin a new
and extraordinary relationship with our God.
Conclusion (7 mins):

T will then ask Ss if they are aware of the three sacraments of
initiation

T will explain the three sacraments of initiation and explain in detail
how Baptism is the first initiation sacrament that begins our journey
and that the next step is confirmation which many Ss are looking at
completing

LESSON 2


The video presented is easy to follow and
understand and will allow students to
understand the sacrament of confirmation

Students will learn that confirmation is the
second sacrament in the three sacraments
of initiation and will be able to link this to
their prior knowledge learnt on the first
sacrament

Students will able to reflect upon the
knowledge learnt within the video in class
discussion and able to better understand the
importance of the second sacrament of
initiation

Students will begin to identify and
understand the 7 gifts of the holy spirit and
how they are received during confirmation

The 7 gifts of the holy spirit and their
importance will resonate within students
minds as they repeat a fun activity to help
students remember and identify the gifts











Intro (5 mins):

T will put on youtube video of sacraments 101 for Ss to watch

T will ask Ss to listen and pay attention to the video as we will be
discussing what was learnt as a class

Main (15 mins):

T will begin class discussion/brainstorm on what they learnt in the
video

T will extend upon the idea mentioned within the video of a stool
needing 3 legs (like the 3 initiation sacraments)

T will ask Ss to recall the 7 gifts of the holy spirit that we receive
when we do our confirmation

Conclusion (10 mins):

T will hand out a 4x4 table which has the different 7 gifts spread out
on the chart

Each chart T hands out will be different and given out randomly

Ss will be playing a game of Bingo whereas T will either say one of
the seven gifts or describe the seven gifts

First Ss to get 4 in a row wins

Students will learn in great detail and length
about confirmation and the rituals and
symbols used


Students will learn about the Mass
undertaken when completing confirmation
and the way the mass takes place and the
order it goes in


Through learning about confirmation, the
rituals and symbols used and the different
things required for confirmation students are
able to use this knowledge for when they
begin their confirmation


Students learn that entry into the Christian
community is ritualised within the parish
community through celebration of the
sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and
Eucharist
Students learn that the sacrament of
Confirmation confirms the gifts of the Holy
Spirit given at Baptism wisdom,
understanding, right judgment, courage,

Intro (5 mins):

T will begin lesson with a short prayer

T will discuss with Ss what they will be covering in the class

Main (20 mins):

T will discuss with the Ss the Catholic rituals of confirmation

T will list the rituals of confirmation, what happens and the order for
Ss on the IWB

List of the rituals of confirmation and what happens and the order

T will discuss and expand (if needed) on the main points below;
- The Confirmation ceremony may take place at Mass
- Bishop wears red vestments to symbolize the red tongues of fire
seen hovering over the heads of the apostles at Pentecost
- Each person wishing to be confirmed comes forward with his or her
sponsor
- When confirmed, you get to choose a Confirmation name to add to
your first and middle names or you can just use the names given
to you at Baptism. New name must be a Christian name such as one
of the canonized saints or a hero from the Bible.
Here's what happens at the actual ritual of Confirmation:

2. Your sponsor lays one hand on your shoulder and speaks your
confirmation name.

Anointing is rich in meaning
Students will learn that oil is a sign of
abundance and joy. It cleanses and limbers;
it is a sign of healing it soothes bruises
and wounds; it can make us radiant with
beauty, health and strength

3. The bishop anoints you by using oil of Chrism to make the sign
o the cross your forehead while saying your Confirmation name
and Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
4. You respond, Amen.
5. The bishop then says, Peace be with you.
6. You respond, And with your spirit or And also with you.
- Being confirmed in the Church means accepting responsibility for
your faith and destiny. Adulthood, even young adulthood, means that
you must do whats right on your own, not for the recognition or
reward but merely because its the right thing to do.


Conclusion (5 mins):

T will recap with Ss all the information and ask if Ss have any
questions
LESSON 4


Students will be able to revisit knowledge
learnt in previous lessons through class
discussion and answering of questions

Students will be able to develop their writing
skills and self-reflection skills on
confirmation as they write on the meaning of
confirmation and one (or more) personal
details included in the response

Students will learn that through Baptism and
Confirmation we are welcomed and initiated
into the faith community and enabled to live
as witnesses to the good news Jesus
revealed. The sharing of the gifts of these
sacraments helps build up the reign of God
made present in the lives of those who
make up the faith community







Intro (5 mins):

T will recap on previous lesson and ask Ss if they have any
questions that they may not have asked in the previous lesson

T will provide any answers for Ss who may have asked questions T
may not have known answers too and needed to research

Main (20 mins):

T will ask Ss to create a short response on confirmation within their
life and the meaning of confirmation

Ss are to write about the meaning of confirmation within the Catholic
faith and also add in some details about confirmation within their life

T will encourage Ss to add either all or some of the following details;

- What confirmation means to them
- Who they may chose to be their sponsor

- Ss ability to write a text that
covers most of the knowledge
learnt in the previous lesson




- Ss ability to ask/inquire for help
and assistance




- Ss ability to reflect on their own

Students will learn that Baptisim and
confirmation are the first two sacraments of
initiation

Students will reflect upon their knowledge of
Baptism and Confirmation and the rituals
and symbols involved in both sacraments

Students will be able to identify that Baptism
welcomes us into Gods family, the Church

Students will develop their understanding of
Baptism and confirmation and that in these
sacraments we celebrate the gift of Gods
Holy Spirit.

Students will learn that at Mass, Jesus is
present in the people, in the priest, in Gods
Word and in Holy Communion.

Students will learn to work in a team and co-
operation skills as they work together to
create the mimes for the class

Intro (8 mins):

T will play a game called popcorn with Ss

T will ask Ss the rituals and/or symbols of Baptism and Ss are to call
out the answers whenever it comes to their mind for T to write on the
board

T will repeat this game with the rituals and/or symbols of
Confirmation

T will then rub out the answers and pair Ss into groups of 3-4

Main (15 mins):

T will ask Ss to create a mime within their group the first two
sacraments of initiation

T will ask Ss to remember the rituals and symbols and make sure
that they are in order

T will ask Ss to remember that they need to make sure the two
sacraments out of the three are also presented in order when
performing to the class

T will give Ss sufficient time to rehearse and give a pre-warning
when time is nearly up
