From Rice Paddy to Rubber (Small) Plantation: Market Economy and Economic
Transformation of Southern Thailand in Memories of Local People

Abstract
The paper attempted to survey the characteristic of market economy and economic
transformation in set of memory of local people in Southern Thailand, via utilising Karl Polanyis
theoretical framework. The data of the paper are extracted from oral history that
manifests/manifested in project of Youth Research in Local History of Southern Thailand, which
was supervised by Thailand Research Fund (TRF.). The paper illustrated that memory on
economic transformation of local Southern people usually relate to the change in economic
activities, especially paddy field and rubber plantation, because both of them has different
kinds of pattern of integration. Additionally, local people have not resisted the market economy
transition, and comfortably adjust to the new economy.
