The Goose
Is Loose!
By Michael Chanak Cincinnati Pundit & Commentator
Title this month: A Midsummer Goose
This time of year the Goose is never sure if she is in pride recovery mode or preparing
gladly for Fall. By now, we all know from my Goose song (sorta like a swan or swoon
song) on Fountain Square in June 2010 that heat and a Goose dont mix too well.
As a matter of doing my thing for community groups, I need to point out a few items.
I know that calendar can be a groaner, but Pride Night at Kings Island rolls up on
Friday, 5th September this year. Yes, that is correct - this marks the 18th time Kings
Island has helped our community by sponsoring this fundraiser along with the Gay
& Lesbian Community Centre Foundation. A percentage of the proceeds (more as the
attendance increases) go to the GLCC Foundation.
So, as a former board member, I can tell you the money raised goes to area
organisations that apply to the centre for a grant of monies (rules apply, of course).
Here is an opportunity to enjoy a great amusement park, have a good time and benefit
the community.
Now for more information, point the browser to www.cincyglbt.com There will be online ticket sales and other information. Your Goose will be attending did you expect
anything less?
Please thank On Broadway, Randy Bridges and crew along with the Court
(ISQCBBE) for doing a family dinner the second Sunday of each month to raise funds.
Dinners are at 6 p.m.
In addition, beginning the 3rd of August the New Spirit Metropolitan Community
Church at 4033 Hamilton Ave, Northside (Cincinnati) will be introducing a second
service on Sunday at 7 p.m., in addition to their 10 a.m. service. The ever-popular
potluck (yes, we know the gurls love to eat) will return to MCC on the 7th of August
as well, becoming a year round event, every first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. All
they ask is that you bring some food to share, or if you are not a cook, paper goods
or even a contribution to keep the outreach self-sufficient. As most know, this potluck
has it roots planted all the way back in the 80s and has moved around as ownership
changed.
Did you catch some of the post-pride comments from various communities? I did
and at the risk of becoming foie gras, it seemed the usual complaints were the usual
complaints. My ears (internal) heard some whining about (you insert the bitch) but
mainly accusations that Pride is only young people and largely commercial.

sisters have called Pride Fever. I piss and whine each year about it being the same
old, boring blah, blah with some old gas pigs, but then I get there and all of a sudden, I
forget about all that.
Isnt that exactly what happened in 2010 when I thought I was in my 20s in 99-degree
heat with a full load of BP meds on board? (Liquor is not a hydration drink!)
You see, the Goose has been treated like a proper lady so no matter what pride she
has decided to attend, people have been genuine and kind, plus (given what happened
in 2010) they all often check that I dont overheat. I feel that pride love. Maybe it is
because I spent so many years working with ordinary folks doing the great thing we
now call pride that I have a different point of view. I donno.
My solution to myself and anyone else, though, is if you dont find your pride
remembering our history or having events that are accessible to the whole age
spectrum then participate yourself! Get involved with your local pride! Be on a
committee! Find our own way and help out. The committee would love the extra hands
(and minds) and trust the Goose, theyd be thrilled if you brought a few dozen of your
closest friends along as well. It really is that simple.

Lets handle the last first. And, well, damn so we are succeeding in our message and
staking out our place in the marketplace. Sure, as an old timer (65 this year with
almost 30 years in on pride committees) I notice it but I
also know from that experience - not only does commercial
sponsorship keep costs low, it is rather a statement of pride.

Looking For A Place???

I worked for a company, Procter & Gamble, once viewed as so

conservative that folks wondered how I survived and retired
there. Now I hear from Michael James Wilson, the Cincy Pride
publicist, that over 400 P&Gers marched in the Cincy parade.
Surely, they all cant be venture capitalists?
Now if the core of this complaint is that we need to be mindful
of our his/herstory and be proactive in preserving it, praise the
goddess! My hunch is that when people complain about change
they dont see their part in change respected.
Now let us talk about this whole beast of a mess about pride
being only for young people.
If I may read here, yes, the walking makes my orthotic webbed
feet sore, my sciatica kicks in if I dont get moving, and it is
too damned hot, but I have a chronic disease that many of my

Black Boar Inn Is Maine Thing

On Midwest Couples Minds...
OGUNQUIT, MaineWhat happens when two Hoosiers head east, find the perfect
spot and open a bed and breakfast in a home so historic that parts of it pre-date the
founding of the United States itself?
Well, if that couple is John Joanette and Dwain Underwood and the spot is the Black
Boar Inn, you not only have a lot of your Midwest friends visiting and booking, but
you become an integral part of the village (population 1,226) and you get yourself
elected to the town council, serve on committees and in under a year become so
much like native Mainers (some use the term Maineacs but its considered insulting
to the locals here) that it is as if you have lived in town and run an inn here for
decades.
The Word got the chance to sit down with John and Dwain recently and found that
running an inn is a long-time goal of the couples. Joanette was a PR and marketing
and lobbying guru in Indiana and Underwood was an exec with a major electronics
retailer, so the transition was as stark as the change from the flat Midwest of Indiana
to the rocky, lobster-filled coast of Maine, but somehow they have not only made the
change, but they have embraced it.
The couple run the B&B with smiles and with respect not only for their home and
environment, but for their guests, whom they go out of their way to please with
modern conveniences (like some damn fast WiFi, flat-screen cable TVs and a guest
fridge in the lounge) all combined with the charming mansion, parts of which do
indeed predate the 1776 founding of the United States.
This being crime-free Maine, doors remain unlocked 24/7 and the couple is proud to
be one of the handful of all-year B&Bs in this town, which split from neighbouring
Wells, Maine, in 1980 over the issue of commercialism.
It seems locals wanted to ban all chains and the Wells town fathers disagreed, so the
folks in the southern part of town petitioned the state and Ogunquit as an entity was
born. The first by-law on the town books was, not surprisingly, no chain anythings
and to this day its why one has to go a bit north to find a CVS or Holiday Inn in
Wells and a bit south to find Hannafords, one of the coolest grocery chains in the
northeast, outside the town limits.
Imagine a place with not a single famous name anywhere (Not even a Wally World
to be seen!) and having those gaudy big box signs and establishments replaced with
local shops selling everything from gourmet meals and some pretty funny (and crass)
lobster-themed t-shirts to places to stay.
And it is the latter where the Indiana duo excel as they took the building, which had
been a B&B but a few years back became a single-family rental which was usually
only occupied in the brief Summer season of June through October, and turned it
back into its former use.
Fireplaces dot the lounges and other rooms including some of the individual
suites. A huge one, which still includes hooks where pots were hung for cooking in
colonial days, graces the breakfast room and the mantelpiece above is clearly handcarved. Local woodworkers made the log tables and the duo do their best to preserve
and expand upon all of the original looks they can.
So what was the hardest part about making a job and location change?
People may not believe this, but the most difficult thing for us was the division of
responsibilities so we both could share the work and still enjoy living here, John
noted.
The way thats been accomplished is with each of the couple getting a me day a
week off while the other manages the house, cooks the breakfast (although there are
two part-timers who help in the duties as well) and then one day a week both of them
take an us day together while the staff manages solo. That gives John and Dwain
a day a week to explore the nearby area there are things from secluded beaches
to gay clubs and outlet malls within an hours drive, as well as (at 66,214 souls)

Its Limbo!!

Judge Overturns Indiana Marriage Ban, But State Gets Faux

Emergency Stay Leaving Hundreds In Limbo, Others Unwed
Continued From The Front Page

have been left in limbo at best in a state where nobodys quite sure if or when our
ceremonies will be recognised.
If you are old enough to recall a TV show called Queen For A Day then you will really
be able to identify with how we gays and lesbians are feeling here in the Hoosier State,
because for three days in late June that magic window opened and same-sex marriages
were, by court order, allowed.
Many hundreds of us slipped through that open window, with my partner of almost 22
years, Ivan Howard, and I hearing the big news over lunch on Wednesday 25th June
and deciding as we had nothing better to do afterwards that wed walk over to the CityCounty Building and get married.
While I say that flippantly, in truth, it was a really electric day. There were hundreds of
friends (and some we met that day and are friends with now) in line to get the needed
paper because even at that moment, wed heard a loud rumbling that Indianas rightwing Republican governor Mike Pence, who always seems to love to cozy up to the Tea
Party (especially as hes rumoured to be in the running for a presidential nomination)
would stop at nothing to get our marriage pipeline shut off as soon as he could.

chance to show the world (or at least our small corner of it) that we were free to get
married and after over two decides together to commit to one another. Happy weve
put our love out there for all to see.
But sad. Sad we live in such an uninformed area where people feel the only way they
can be held in high respect is to degrade others and in a country where its taken us
years to get this far. Years right next door to Canada where World Pride was held the
last week of June (see our photo pages in this issue) and where gay marriage has been
the nations law since 2005.
It all makes me look back at my 1950s childhood when so many of the same nay-sayers
said Blacks marrying whites was unnatural. These days the millennials look back
and cant believe we ever fought that fight. In 25 years their children will be doing the
same about gay marriage, regardless of what the family advocates and the governor
seem to believe.
You have my, and many others, word on it.

Turns out it took him and his Attorney General Greg Zoeller almost three days to play
the spoilers, but before they managed to do it hundreds (some reports say over 1,000)
of we happy gay and lesbian couples were saying our I Dos and walking hand-inhand out of all but one of the 92 county courthouses in Indiana. The lone nay was
Daviess County, where the clerk said it was against her beliefs and delayed handing
over even a single license until the gate was shut state-wide.
But on a happier note, we (and many others) have the paper. We had the ceremony
and we are married, despite what Gov. Pence or Attorney General Zoeller wish to
believe. A posting on my Facebook that wed wed brought us 219 likes (not bad for me
having only 665 friends on there, huh?) and the mailbox has been filled with cards, the
friends we see on the street have been hugging us and everyones wanted to see (and
laugh at) our wedding photo (Its on the front page.) as we have on Word shirts and
Im clad in bright red shorts as wed been delivering papers right before the news came
through!
The larger meaning of marriage is that we are finally federally official. We were in
Canada in mid-July and when the Canadian border guy at Buffalo/Fort Erie asked our
relationship, not an eye was batted or a smirk seen when we said We are a married
couple. Happily the same was the case with the U.S. border patrol when we returned
to the country at Sarnia/Port Huron on the Michigan/Ontario border and offered the
same reply.
We can file our federal taxes together and if one of us gets run over by a bus the other
gets his Social security, IRA and other benefits so its a start.
State-wise we are both disgusted to live in Indiana, not only because the attorney
general went after an emergency order to stop the marriages and last I looked
a flood, fire, blizzard or tornado are emergencies, not the happiness of a few folks
feeling the sweet breath of equality but now we are in Indiana limbo until the final
case is decided; likely ultimately by the Supreme Court and maybe a year from now.
Until then, we are all men (and women) without a country because anything the state
gets a say in is yet denied us, while the feds say we are married.
So how do we and our friends and acquaintances who sneaked through that brief
window feel? First, truly and really happy and proud. Proud that we jumped at the

Outside
The Box
By Dr. Fred Schloemer, LCSW / Louisville
Dear Dr. Fred:
My partner and I have been together over 20 years in a monogamous, committed
relationship. While we support marriage equality and have many gay friends who
have married in other states, weve never felt the need to get married or even have a
commitment ceremony ourselves.
For one thing, we dont feel we need a formality to legitimise our commitment to each
other we know we are going to be together for the rest of our lives and thats enough
for us. Also, we have wills leaving everything to each other, so it wouldnt affect our
inheritances in any way.
For another thing, it feels to us like trying to measure up to the heterosexual lifestyle. We
feel marriage is something straight people do, and one of the reasons we came out as gay
men was to differentiate ourselves from the straight world. So why try to pattern our lives
after theirs?

in this regard, when they talked about declaring your love to the world. If a couple
honestly feel the need to marry in order to enhance their relationship in some way or
to formally announce it to the world, I say go for it.
Everyone should have the right to express their love in the ways that feel best for
them, and I sincerely hope youre correct about Governor Pence being thwarted in his
latest anti-gay efforts.
Considering the financial and legal ramifications, I normally counsel clients to explore
these thoroughly with their attorneys and accountants and to do whatever seems most
advantageous to them based on the expert advice they get.
On a more personal level, I tend to share your thinking about marriage not being
especially relevant to me and my partner as gay men. We too have a deep, lifelong
commitment to each other, and while weve discussed the option of marrying several
times over the years, we always land on the side of not doing it.
It just doesnt seem necessary to us emotionally, legally or financially. We support
our friends who have married and are very happy for them to have done so. However,
for now at least were in no rush to get to the altar although maybe we would
reconsider that if it would frustrate Mr. Pence.
Fred Schloemer, Ed.D., LCSW is a gay psychotherapist and author in Louisville. Send
him your questions at FredSchloemer63@gmail.com

Finally, our accountant, who is a gay man in a long-term, committed relationship, has
advised us that in our particular financial circumstances, marrying not only wouldnt
give us any tax benefits, but would actually hurt us. My partner makes a great deal
of money, while I am retired with my chief income being my monthly social security
payments. Presently my social security isnt taxed, but if we marry it would be, so I would
actually have less income at the end of the day.
Recently, however, weve begun to have questions about all of this, and many of our
friends have been pressuring us to reconsider our stance on marrying. Our home state
of Indiana briefly lifted its ban on gay marriage, and then reinstated it, thanks to archconservative Rethuglican governor Mike Pence. But signs exist that he will be overruled
on this and that gay marriage will prevail here.
Another consideration is FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) policies and my health. I am
quite a bit older than my partner, and while Im in excellent shape now, I can imagine a
time when I wont be. As an unmarried couple, my partner couldnt take FMLA benefits
to take care of me in the event of any health problems I might develop, but if we were
married he could.
Last, but not least, our families and friends are really after us to marry. We dont socialise
a lot but over the course of the last month, have been to four or five different parties.
At every single one of these events the conversation eventually got to gay marriage, and
people turned to us and asked, So when are you two getting married?
When we replied that we didnt intend to, they confronted us with all kinds of questions
and arguments: Well, why in the world not? Dont you love each other and want to
declare that love to the world? What if someone contests your wills and tries to disinherit
you?
And on and on this went until we had to firmly change the subject. But its gotten us
thinking nonetheless that maybe we ought to get married after all. What is your advice on
the topic?
Sign us,
Thinking Twice in Tell City
Dear Thinking Twice:
Your question is certainly a timely one and one that I can relate to personally both
in my own home life and my therapy practice as well. The issue has come up several
times with clients in my office, and a recent Fourth of July picnic my partner and I
attended turned into a lively debate on the topic. Frankly, I have a divided opinion on
the matter, based partly on personal feelings and partly on professional training and
beliefs.
Starting with the professional angle first, I believe the decision whether to marry or
not needs to be grounded primarily in emotional factors, rather than financial or
legal ones, (although the latter also deserve careful consideration). In the process of
pestering you to marry, you friends have actually expressed some of my own thoughts

All across the country courts are handing us monumental victories yes even in
conservative Indiana and Kentucky. The Marriage Equality fight has consumed 95% of
our time, our political capital and our resources. But it cannot define us.
Whenever theres a big political elephant in the room (OK, or a donkey) it requires
our attention. In Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois and Michigan, that fight has taken
multiple tracks. And the victories are varied but positive. Ask around there are
multiple other issues which need to be addressed. Notably:

IN YOUR
CORNER

** Workplace equality and rights: You shouldnt be able to be fired just because youre
lesbian, gay, bi or trans.

BAIRD

One of the biggest criticisms of the lesbian, gay, bi & trans political movement is
that too often we fiddle while Rome burns. This month its time to open the lid and
examine that concept.

WHILE ROME BURNED

** Transgender rights: this segment of our community often gets left at the altar. Their
patience is remarkable. Its got to stop.
** Lesbian, gay, bi & trans seniors: as we age we face new challenges and
opportunities.
** Education: its imperative that the lesbian, gay, bi & trans movement become part of
every schools curriculum.
** Substance abuse: way too prevalent in our community.
** Our youth they need proper guidance, support and mentoring.
And theres more... How do we win smaller battles on these and other issues? Most
often, if civil rights history is any indicator, the larger victory will pave the way for
more wins. But fate favours the prepared. And weve got to be ready. This delicate
public policy dance requires a balance among issues. And constituencies. Were best
when we include all who want a place at the table and who want to constructively
participate.

You, too, can be a part of it. It takes only a few seconds to reach out to folks and offer
thanks. So heres a small step in that direction a nudge, if you will.
** All the folks at Indiana Equality who have laboured for a couple of decades, all told:
Don Sherfick, Chris Paulsen, Kathy Sarris, Walter Botich, Jon Keep, Mark St. John,
Chris Becker, Randy Studt, Dino Sierp, Linda Ponterio, Tara Betterman, Jessica Wilch,
and many morethe problem with naming names is, well, you know.
** Allied organisations, like the Transgender Alliance: Jessica Wilch and Vivian Benge
have performed remarkable tasks over the last several years and each was heavilyinvolved in IE, too. The Indiana Stonewall Democrats fought tough battles going back
several years, only recently to get a full voting seat on the Democratic State Committee
in 2013.
Lori Morris and many Democratic allies spent lots of time working to get that parity.
A full voting seat. Where decisions are made. So simple yet it took so long.
** Equality groups in multiple cities whove proven their worth in the local trenches:
Wally Paynter in Evansville among others. Catherine Pittman in South Bend. Terri
Cole in Terre Haute. And many more folks you know who you are.
** Legal friends whove tried their best to help. ACLU-Indiana helped good friend
Ruth Morrison challenge our states Defence of Marriage Act a decade ago and
although they lost, it was a memorable challenge that helped pave the way for the
current lawsuits. Now, Lambda Legal, ACLU-Indiana and Indiana Equality Action
have sponsored three separate federal lawsuits that are being legally-briefed to the 7th
Circuit Court of Appeal as this column is being written.

By Bill Elliott / Word Critic
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the sequel to 2011s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with
more ape films in the pipeline. The new series takes the classic film franchise of the
1960s and 70s and refits it for a 21st century audience raised on CGI. Changes in film
and computer technologies make for more expressive and dexterous apes (The apes
in the original films looked like the monkey puppets I had as a child.) but I am not
sure that the new series emulates the ambitious scope, narrative power or wit of the
originals.
Like its precursors, the new Planet of the Apes films are allegories suffused with
contemporary social and political issues. But whereas 1968s Planet of the Apes and its
spin-offs took a lighter and more satirical touch in dealing with topics such as racism,
slavery, military power and the misuse of technology, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
feels darkly bleak in its depiction of mans inhumanity toward his fellow creatures
(whether man or his evolutionary predecessors).
In the first Planet of the Apes, a group of astronauts land on an unknown planet (later
revealed as a post-apocalyptic earth) after travelling through space for more than 2000
years. Highly evolved apes are in control while devolved humans are mute and kept in
slavery or hunted for sport.
In the Planet of the Apes Mark II series, the apes have evolved as a result of genetic
experiments. At the same time, most of humanity has been wiped out by a strain of
simian flu.
As Dawn begins, apes roam the forests off the northern California coast while
surviving humans are ensconced in a fortified tower in a dilapidated San Francisco.
A group of human scientists seeks to restore a broken hydroelectric power plant
to bring electrical power back to the city. One of the scientists shoots a roaming
adolescent ape out of fear. The humans are quickly confronted by a band of apes and
their leader, Caesar (Andy Serkis), warns the humans to leave the area.

harm speech strikes a false note. When Caesar points and says, Go, the hair stands
up on the audiences neck.
The use of sign language as the primary means of simian communication is a deft
touch, making the interactions between the apes seem both intimate and plausible.
The stilted use of English by the apes, on the other hand, seems forced and a little
ridiculous.
In the original Planet of the Apes, we assume that several thousand years of evolution
have brought heightened intelligence and verbal facility to the apes. If we are expected
to believe, in these remakes, that a genetic experiment has brought apes to a similar
level of intelligence in just a decade or so, then why not go the whole hog and
have them talk in fully formed grammatical sentences? Would that appear any less
believable than having them construct pidgin-English sentences like Ape not kill ape?
One of the films most insightful (and funniest) moments occurs when Koba is
cornered by two heavily armed rednecks in a makeshift armoury. Should we
shoot him?, they ask each other. Koba goes into performing chimp mode, blowing
raspberries, waving his hands over his head, making hooting noises. They decide to let
the dumb ape go. When Koba returns for a second time to confront the two men, the
consequences of Kobas playacting are much more serious.
The final act of the film is given over to an overlong battle sequence between apes and
humans, followed by a more personal battle for supremacy between Caesar and Koba.
In both instances, the forces of good win out over the forces of evil. After Malcolm
tells Caesar to lead the apes out of San Francisco and back to the forest, warning that
if they stay there will be a full-blown war between humans and apes, Caesar replies,
Apes started it. Humans not forgive apes. War has already begun.
The starkness of the conclusion rescues the film from the clich and predictability to
which it had fallen victim. It also, of course, leaves the door open for multiple sequels.

Need A Space? We Got Them From Just $99.

Give Us A Call: 317/632.8840.

This sets a conflict of interests in motion. The humans want to reboot technology and
electrical power is a necessary step in the return to pre-virus levels of civilisation. The
apes want to live in seclusion and have no interaction with humans.
Fear and mistrust become the order of the day. Humans and apes each form
ideological factions, with one group wishing to live harmoniously with the other
species while the other is intent on destroying them.
While Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is visually impressive, there is not a great deal
of depth or nuance in the characterisation of both apes and humans. The film seems
a little tired and even clichd in places (Why, for example, are the only two female
characters of note an ape mother and the human medic who nurses her back to
health?).
Caesar and his human counterpart, Malcolm (Jason Clarke), may anguish over the
moral dimensions of war, but renegade ape Koba (Tony Kebbell), and the leader of the
human colony, Dreyfus (Gary Oldman), seem to be almost cartoonish depictions of
power used to excess.
Despite the use of motion capture digital technology to transform human actors into
apes, it is hard to accept the apes as anything other than humans playing apes.
Early images of apes moving effortlessly through the forest are striking enough. But
the opening sequence, featuring a group of apes hunting deer, looks like what it is:
computer trickery designed for maximum 3-D effect. Id much rather the filmmakers
had focused on the story and dialogue (more on that later) and less on long, drawn-out
battle sequences or the obligatory one-on-one standoff that provides the film with its
climax.
That is not to say Dawn of the Planet of the Apes doesnt have some promising
moments. For example, during their first encounter with the forest-dwelling apes, the
small group of human scientists find themselves surrounded.
Since one of the scientists has just shot an adolescent ape, Malcolms We mean you no

Finances
In Focus
By Michael Wright / Edward D Jones
It probably doesnt happen as much as youd like, but from time to time, you have
some extra disposable income. When this happens, how should you use the funds? Assuming you have adequate emergency savings typically, three to six months worth
of living expenses should you pay off debts or fund your IRA or another investment
account?
Theres no one correct answer and the priority of these options may change, depending on your financial goals. However, your first step may be to consider what type
of debt youre thinking of paying down with your extra money. For example, if you
have a consumer loan that charges a high rate of interest and you cant deduct the
interest payments from your taxes you might conclude that its a good idea to get rid
of this loan as quickly as possible.
Still, if the loan is relatively small, and the payments arent really impinging on your
monthly cash flow that much, you might want to consider putting any extra money
you have into an investment that has the potential to offer longer-term benefits. For
instance, you might decide to fully fund your IRA for the year before tackling minor
debts. (In 2014, you can contribute up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500
if youre 50 or older.)
When it comes to making extra mortgage payments, however, the picture is more complicated. In the first place, mortgage interest is typically tax deductible, which makes
your loan less expensive. Even beyond the issue of deductibility, you may instinctively feel that its best to whittle away your mortgage and build as much equity as possible
in your home. But is that always a smart move?
Increasing your home equity is a goal of many homeowners after all, the more equity you have in your home, the more cash youll get when you sell it. Yet, if your homes
value rises which, admittedly, doesnt always happen you will still, in effect, be
building equity without having to divert funds that could be placed elsewhere, such as
in an investment. In this situation, its important to weigh your options. Do you want
to lower your mortgage debts and possibly save on cumulative interest expenses? Or
would you be better served to invest that money for potential growth or interest payments?
Heres an additional consideration: If you tied up most of your money in home equity,
you may well lose some flexibility and liquidity. If you were to fall ill or lose your job,
could you get money out of your home if your emergency savings fund fell short? Possibly, in the form of a home equity line of credit or a second mortgage, but if you were
not bringing in any income, a bank might not even approve such a loan no matter
how much equity you have in your house. You may more easily be able to sell stocks,
bonds or other investment vehicles to gain access to needed cash.

Getting some extra money once in a while is a nice problem to have. Still, you wont
want to waste the opportunity so, when choosing to pay down debts or put the
money into investments, think carefully, and then make a decision and stick with it.
Along the same lines, but with a bit of a twist, did you know that September is National Preparedness Month? Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA), National Preparedness Month seeks to educate Americans on preparing for
natural disasters and other types of emergencies. But youll also need to prepare for
unexpected events in many other areas of your life particularly those events related
to the financial security of you and your partner, should you have one.
Here are some of the most important of these events, along with possible preparations
for them:
Unanticipated early retirement If you encounter a downsizing or other occurrence that results in the loss of a job, or even the end of a career, before you expected
it, would you be able to avoid major disruptions to your lifestyle?
To help prepare for such a loss of income, make sure to fully fund your IRA each year.
The maximum contribution is $5,500 per year plus an additional $1,000 for those age
50 and older.
Disability Even a short-term disability can seriously harm your finances and a
long-term disability could prove devastating. Your employer might offer some form of
disability insurance, but it may not be sufficient. So you may need to explore private
coverage. And do not say only old folks have this happen because something as silly
as a bicycle riding crash, car accident or fall while camping or hiking can result in a
crippling injury. This really does affect all ages of my readers!
Personal liability If someone were ever injured on your property or due to some
action of yours, you could face legal actions demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars. To help protect yourself, consider adding umbrella liability insurance.
Changing family situation Changes in your life marriage, divorce, remarriage,
children, stepchildren things which as more and more states allow we gays and
lesbians to marry can drastically affect your estate plans and the type of legacy you
want to leave are now coming into play. To prevent unpleasant surprises for your partner, make sure you periodically review beneficiary designations on your investment
accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k), and work with your tax and legal advisors to
update your estate-planning documents will, living trust and so on as needed.
Right now, gays and lesbians are especially prone to problems betwen estates and
families and even with the latest changes, you and not some sister you dislike in Orlando should decide who gets your money and home. Get things in writing, get the Ts
crossed, the Is dotted and keep the info updated or maybe an ex or that evil sister will
end up with your money and not your current spouse!
Outliving your money Once you reach retirement, your greatest concern may be
that youll outlive your money. To help prevent this from happening, create a sustainable withdrawal strategy that is, determine how much you can take out each year
from your investment and retirement accounts, and stick to this amount. As a friends
dad (who lived to be 84) said often in the last few years of his life he retired at age
54 If Id known I was going to live this long, I would have saved more money! No
truer words have ever been spoken!
Need for long-term care You cant predict whether you will ever need to enter a
nursing home or require the assistance of a home health care worker, but one thing is
for sure these services are extremely expensive.
Consider this: The national average for a private room in a nursing home is nearly
$84,000 per year, according to a recent survey by Genworth, a financial security
company. To help prepare for these costs, you may want to consult with a professional
financial advisor who can suggest appropriate solutions.
Untimely death Your absence could jeopardize your partners and familys financial
security, particularly if you passed away while your children (if you or your partner
had kids) were still at home. To help ensure that your family could remain in the home
and that any children could go to college, if they choose, make sure you have adequate
life insurance.
Your passage through life will be filled with twists and turns, and you cant always see
what lies ahead. But you can ease your journey by preparing yourself for the unexpected.
Enjoy the rest of your Summer and see you in September!

By Mz. Pink / Word Columnist
Dear Mz. Pink,
My girlfriend started working out a while ago and has been really dedicated. Although Im
proud of her, I thought she would be more into sex and wanting to be with me intimately
once she started to feel more energised and better with her health. It seems that the
opposite has taken effect and she has no interest in me whatsoever.
I dont know what to do or what to think because we have been together so long and I
encourage her to do what she wants and needs to make herself feel better, even though I
think she is beautiful all the time.

Lets Get Physical-Indy
Physical,
Im sorry youre going through this because it seems that once someone starts to
become healthier then they will start to do healthier things and become more active
with their partner. To me this should be a no-brainer. There could be many factors
contributing to her not wanting or lack of interest in having sex, so lets explore some
possible reasons:
You didnt mention cheating, so that dosent seem to be a huge worry, but lets
communicate and make sure that this isnt a deciding factor on why she doesnt want
the intimate time with you. Im not saying she is playing around, but Im just saying
make sure she isnt.
Maybe shes not where she wants to be health-wise or physically and that could take
some time. Getting fit and to the point where you feel you want to be takes longer than
a few months its actually an on-going process. I suggest you talk to her about it and
ask her what her goals are. Find out if she is reaching them, tell her she looks great
and all her hard work up to this point is paying off. Offer to give her a hot bath after
her workout.
She could be so into her working out that she has just pushed everything else out of
her mind. Is she still working, taking care of home, the kids, the animals? Is everything
slipping or just your sex life? I suggest, again that you talk to her about it.
As aggravating as it is, keep trying to get her in the mood. Dont give up, because
Lesbian Bed Death is a very real thing and once your attraction and will to have sex
goes, it is very hard to get back.
It will however, take both of you to make the sparks happen. I dont expect all the work
to be put on you, but right now until the issue is brought to light with your partner
then you have to do what you have to do.

FREE

In the meantime, maybe you could start working out with her, maybe if she sees you
putting in as much work as she is and you are doing it with her, that might be a big
turn on. Besides the both of you will be breathless, hot and sweating, which is sexy.
Who wouldnt like to be in that situation?

Also, masturbate. Dont shy away from yourself. If things are getting grim then take
care of yourself when the urge is too strong. Masturbation is healthy, but shouldnt be
your only source of satisfaction if you are in a relationship.
Finally, try and talk to her, but dont bitch about it: talk about it. Tell her you feel really
left out and miss her. Ask her what you can do to her newly fit body that would turn
her on. Explore together because maybe since shes been working out her tastes in sex
have changed and she likes other things now. If none of this stuff works, then maybe
its time to re-evaluate to see if your relationship is worth trying to save or stay in, even
if its sexless. How important is sex to you? How important is your partner?
Good Luck,
Mz. Pink

Sheila's
Column
By Sheila Suess Kennedy
Call this one a Life Lesson.
Every once in a while, in the midst of our daily routines and our complaints about lifes
minor aggravations, an unexpected loss shocks us into realising just how very fragile
and very precious life is.

When It Comes To
Downtown Living
We Got All The Bases
Covered!

My friend Paul Chase died last month in a senseless automobile accident. He was
only 58. I attended his memorial, along with a huge crowd of mourners. Paul
wasnt famous, wasnt a celebrity and he wasnt rich. He wasnt the sort of person
whose memorial attracts wanna-be hangers-on or people who are there to be
seen. The people who attended were there because they were grieving the loss of a
genuinelygoodperson.

What can I say about Paul? How do I describe his impact for people who didnt know
him? Even for someone who writes all the time, its hard to find the words.

Paul was a handsome, brilliant lawyer who chose to work for social justice and
sound public health policies rather than joining a silk-stocking law firm and making
a lot of money. But he was never strident, never holier-than-thou, never anything
but incredibly funny and thoughtful and kind. A look around the crowd confirmed
the breadth of his impact legislators from both parties, statehouse lobbyists,
representatives of non-profit organisations, and lots and lots of friends white, black,
gay, straight, young and old.

As coworkers, friends and relatives shared their memories, I couldnt help thinking that
Paul Chase should have been a poster child for the family values that intolerant folks
insist they are protecting by discriminating against lesbian, gay, bi & trans people.
Hed met his partner Terry when they were 18-year-old college students and theyd
been a devoted and loving couple for 40 years. They were close to their respective
families, and those families even four decades ago supported and embraced them
both. At the memorial, Terrys sister reminisced that her mother had adored Paul so
much that she made every dessert he liked when they came to visit and served them all
at the same meal!

The day of his death, the Federal Court struck down Indianas ban on same-sex
marriage and Paul was thrilled that he and Terry could finally get married. It wasnt to
be. I dont know whether to be happy he knew about the ruling or incredibly sad that
he died without taking advantage of it, or both.

There was no hate in Paul, no evident resentment of the people who would deny him
a place at the civic table, no vitriol for the vitriolic just an abundant kindness, an
inner serenity and a killer sense of humour.

The memorial programme carried a favourite quote from the Dalai Lama: To be kind,
honest and have positive thoughts; to forgive those who harm us and treat everyone as a
friend; to help those who are suffering and never to consider ourselves superior to anyone
else; even if this advice seems rather simplistic, make the effort of seeing whether by
following it you can find greater happiness.

Paul lived by that creed. He left us much, much too soon, but very few people even
those who have lived much longer have left as enduring a legacy in the hearts and
minds of those left behind.

His (all-too-short) life is a reminder to all of us that we should try to live so that others
will be inspired by our example. He will be terribly missed.

Hackin
The Net
By Ted Fleischaker / Word Publisher
Someone not too long ago asked if we were a computer column and I told them
not totally, but I asked them why they were inquiring. I was told that computers
are fun and interesting, but what about other things electronic.
It got me to thinking, and I sat there trying to think what these days does not have
a computer (or several smaller ones or chips) hidden somewhere in the innards. I
really, aside from a jar of ketchup and a pound of meat was pretty hard-pressed to
come up with anything. In fact, the ketchup and meat might have RFID chips on
or in the packaging to let inventory control systems and cash registers which use
such items work.
But lets look at things which are a bit more obvious. Or maybe not. This all came
to mind recently when our washer broke down. Its a 2009 model made by a major
manufacturer and its packed with chips and computer controls which make it
almost impossible to fix or work on (per the repairman the local shop sent).
The days when one selected regular wash and timed the cycle with a big dial
are long gone, aside from a very few base bottom-of-the-line models. These
days instead the machine wants to think for you (and I) and often this results in
disastrous consequences.
No longer do we throw in the jeans, select a water temperature, turn a dial and hit
start, but instead theres a jeans cycle. Theres one for woolens, delicates, permapress, whites and things one wishes to sanitise and all of that information about
spin speeds, water temperatures and whatever else the machine needs to know
(or thinks it does) are hidden in computer chips somewhere in the bowels of the
washer. The issue is what if you do not want to use what someone in some factory
has been told to programme? Or what if something goes wrong whilst the cycle is
underway like a power glitch or water issues or worse?
The latter happened to us recently with a door latch breaking, dumping soap,
bleach and all the towels we were washing in the middle of the laundry room
floor all while the drum continued turning and water continued to run and the
machine continued to spin like some plot from a 1954 I Love Lucy show.
The matter is made yet worse because appliances want to think for us. This
washer thought everything was A-OK and went right on. And the timer showed
had we not been home to catch it, the whole process would have continued
another half hour!
Theres also the matter of timers. They are computer-generated numbers, too, and
are estimates. If you have used a dishwasher, washer or dryer which puts up the
time for a cycle to complete, all we can say is do not believe it. If you do I have a
bridge to sell you.
A load of towels, which the computer chip in a friends washer (at right above)
attempted to balance, rebalance and balance again left the time to go indicator
at two minutes for almost an hour recently all while we twiddled our thumbs
waiting for the final beep!
And do not think I am singling out washers and dryers. The computer chips to
make things think for you are in everything.
Our microwave asks whether we are thawing beef, chicken, fish or bread and
what the weight is, before putting up a time when one hits start. Problem is, the
estimate is just that a guess and often not too educated. Lets be logical here:
How good can it be because the machine doesnt know if the item being thawed
has been frozen two hours at -10 degrees or two weeks or two months at +20
degrees, therefore how CAN it possibly know what time will be needed for it to
thaw?
To avoid hungry guests revolting, buy fresh, thaw a day ahead or give yourself
some extra time. And keep an eye on things because if that chip thaws your food
too long, your chicken breasts will come out of the thaw cycle half-baked before
you ever start cooking.

But again it doesnt stop here. We thought we were being clever and bought a
major manufacturers radio for our car. We had a photo and wrote about it in this
column a month or three ago. Its one that connects to the internet, has a screen to
allow GPS and also lets the driver answer calls hands-free and does everything but
mop the floor.
Problem is that they spent all our cash on the whizz-bangs and gimcracks, and
there was not much leftover for the radio circuits.
On a recent long-distance trip we found station after station we tuned to distorted
and lasting just a few minutes before being over-run with static.
Fearing the radio was defective, when we returned home, we contacted the shop
where we bought it a few months ago and were told, Oh, thats a great set but
they dont have much of a tuner in it because most people use it to play from their
iTunes playlist or through their phones so the radio is not very good.
Again, those computer chips and the cost factors are at play. And again the
consumer loses.
And finally, dont get me started about cars and motorcycles and other modes of
transport.
The chips in them are big brother and know (and can tell your insurance
company, police or government safety folks, too) how fast you were going, if you
hit the brakes and a lot more if you have a wreck and claim damages.
Others are equipped for everything from breath tests to see if you have had too
many drinks to drive and locks to keep folks who dont know your code out.
There are also chips which tell us to check engine (When that lights I open the
hood to see if someone stole the motor before calling the auto club!) and others
to say tyre pressure might be low when usually its not anything serious but when
Fall and cold weather arrive tyres naturally lose a bit of buoyancy, fooling the
sensors and that **%!@@@ chip into thinking you have a flat. Of course, those
smart computers often cannot tell whats really up, and report an issue which is
sure to send you to the tyre shop or service garage.
So the chips and mini-computers are everywhere and sadly, in my way of thinking,
the more we allow them to be the brains behind our lives, the less likely we are
to get things done, but the more likely we are to have unnecessary repair bills and
the definite likelihood we have of being stranded in the laundry room for 45
minutes waiting for that 2 minutes to go load to finish.
Of course that means machines have beaten man and our time is now useless,
right?

our community have earned a special place of respect: former Senate Dem Leader Vi
Simpson of Bloomington.

Maine Thing Is Happiness...

Portland, Maines largest city which has the closest Sams and BJs (another warehouse
club, so dont get too excited though the name is fun). There are also a plethora of
restaurants both in town and nearby and when they go out John noted, We always try
somewhere we havent been. That way when a guest asks about where to get the best
lobster or Mexican or pizza we have not only an answer, but a place to say we have
been there and this is what we found. All of their recommendations with us were spot
on, so wed say the research is working!

** Allied groups like the Interfaith Coalition on Non-discrimination and clergy from
around the state, especially The Rev. Jeff Miner.

Speaking of research, John told The Word that hes constantly looking for local items
to put on the breakfast tables. My goal is to be able to walk to buy and not even to
drive, so instead of the grocery, the strawberries with the French Toast come from a
stand a couple blocks away. We buy eggs from a local farmer and as much as we can
thats locally sourced. If we support the town, they support us and we are our own little
organisation here.

Other allied institutions are critical to any success our community will enjoy. This
newspaper is a very important player. So are the pride organisations around the state.
Their collective reach surpasses any other communications tool available to us. In
2014, the coalition included those participants for the first time ever.

Another thing the couple pointed out is that while they watch and worry about their
friends in Indiana on the issue of gay and lesbian marriage, Maine was the first state
for the issue to go on the ballot and gay marriage rights to be approved by voters, not a
judge or legislature.

NEXT: HOW DO WE CONTINUE THE MOMENTUM?

One thing is certain. A victory invites questions:
Whats next for our community?
How can each of us help?
Solid questions both and there is no one answer. Rather, I feel, that a hybrid approach
works:
What subject area noted above sparks your interest? Or is there another subject not
mentioned in the lesbian, gay, bi & trans rainbow which I failed to mention and which
you feel needs help?
Find one of those subject areas and zero-in on it. This will require time and money so
do both if you can. And while youre helping with the cause, the following lesson can
be helpful. Its a solid and consistent by-product of the movement from state to state,
victory to victory:

Its so nice to live in a state where we are equal to everyone. Lets put it this way: Were
here. Were queer. And EVERYONES used to it! Joanette said with a huge grin.
So whats the Black Boar Inn cost for rooms? In season, a double is around $200 a
night, whereas out of season its about $125 a night. That does include some awesome
breakfasts, and things many of those nasty chains charge for are included. Thats stuff
like really fast WiFi, free parking at the door and the ability to leave your car and
walk everywhere from the towns best eateries to the beach (two blocks). Theres also
the towns famous Marginal Way, which stretches over rocky cliffs and along sandy
beaches with breath-taking views of the Atlanta Ocean. The walk starts under three
blocks from the Black Boars front door and is (Summer and Winter) a popular spot
for guests of the inn as well as those famous me days John and Dwain take each
week.
To find out more about the inn visit www.blackboarinn.com or give John or Dwain
a bell on 207/646.2112. The inn is at 277 Main Street in downtown Ogunquit, Maine
exactly 1,000 miles from downtown Indianapolis and a world away. To look in
from home (and see what you are missing) visit http://marginalwayfund.org/photoswebcam/lighthouse-webcam/ and check the live cam views. You will for sure want to
pack your car and head to Maine!

Make room for dissent, but at some time, of course, all the dissent needs to gel into
a cohesive battle plan. But dont be too quick to dismiss ideas from those with whom
you might disagree. Said one wise statewide leader from Illinois: constructive dissent
stabilises the battle plan.
When the HJR-3 battle began the coaching staff was small with little room for error.
Freedom Indiana and the successful statewide effort gave us a formidable talent pool.
Its ours to use.

Panthers
Perspective
By Panther Daddy / Word Columnist
Some of the fondest memories of my childhood are of the barber shop. Im not talking
about a hair salon or quick cuts type of business but an honest-to-goodness, brick-andmortar facility an all-male place where men went to get away.
Part of the ritual of the transition from boyhood to manhood was going to the barbershop. I was enthralled by the adult men who would sit around and talk about everything but at the same time talk about absolutely nothing. The swivel barber chairs
were much like a carnival rides in that the barbers had a certain rhythm, each different, depending on the barber as to how they prepared the customer for their individual
time in the chair. The barber had his own cadence as he fanned and popped the bar-

ber cloth to signal his preparedness for the next encounter in the chair. The nostril
assault of the aroma updraft of starch as the ascent of the chair to the proper cutting
position continued to signify the upcoming personal encounter that would unfailingly
mesmerize me for hours.
The smell of the elixirs, ointments, menthol and talcum saturated my nostrils, while
the rhythm of the straight razor slapping the sizable leather strap next to the chair,
gave me inexplicable sensations. As there was typically a wait to get a spot in the chair,
there were magazines to read and always a rather lively game of checkers going on to
add to the surprisingly sensual experience.
If all of the afore mentioned stations were occupied, there was another option available to the customer. In fact, coming in for a cut and a shave were only part of the
experience. No trip to the barber was complete until you went to the shoe shine station
and let the equally talented shoe shine boys, work their magic. These guys would
either be the foreplay or the climax of the decidedly masculine barber experience.
Like the barber, the dynamic of having your shoes shined was a combination of the olfactory, physical and oft times, spiritual scene. The chairs were usually sitting up on a
stand, allowing you to survey the activities and interactions in the
room. The boys, which is what they were called at the time even
though they were typically adult males, were especially tuned into
wanting to give the ultimate experience, usually with the reward
of a sizable tip being their focus. In their boxes there were a variety of cloths, polishes, brushes and creams that were utilised to
provide the customer with a complete, literally head to toe, afternoon of relaxation and male bonding. The intimate encounter of
not only having your shoes shined but of having your feet massaged really was the ultimate of being able to shut out the rest of
the world and for a brief slice of time, feel like you are truly were
The King of the World. The ritual of the cut, shave and shine is
and was all about the person being serviced.
Typically, men engaged in this ritual in preparation for an upcoming event. Whether it be as simple as church on Sunday, a big
party for some type of celebration or just a way to either begin
or end the week, it was an opportunity to release the cares of the
everyday world and escape to a place of calm and serenity.
In our community events, we have Boot Blacks who are trained
to be able to provide us with this zen of self centeredness. While
we now have any variety of gender identities involved in providing this service, it is something that we all could use from time to
time, if not on a regular basis.
Ive only had one occasion at a kink event to participate in having
my head shaved. Each state has very specific laws around safety
and health when it comes to hair cutting and shaving so many
times, the availability is limited. However, at most events, boot
blacks are readily available. We tend to use them to recondition
our leather gear, be it pants, vests, chaps or coats.
The boot blacks I know actually do love the challenge of being
able to restore an item to its original splendour. More often than
not, our spirits also need reconditioned. Sitting in the bootblack
chair does provide that opportunity. For a brief time, being able
to sit back and relax and allow the comfort of the moment to reenergise and restore the spirit is a very healing process. It allows
us the opportunity to just be, to be centered, to be relaxed and to
be the centre of our own personal world. I encourage you to try
it, it does make a difference.

Magic! Rude. I dont know what it is about this song, but I first heard it last June
in Denver and I just loved it. This reggae infusion band is made up of musicians
originally from Toronto, Ontario. Their lead singer, Nasri Atweh, also writes for many
other major label artists. The song charted well in several other countries before being
picked up by U.S. radio. Now there are dance remixes available for us deejays to play.
This song is just totally infectious to listen to and the remixes really liven up the party.
I have a feeling this will be one of the songs we all remember from the Summer of
2014.
Well that wraps it up for this month. On a personal note I have been really busy helping the bosses, below, to build the new MJs Caf club here in Dayton. We are hoping to
have it ready soon with some exciting performers and a whole new look. It has been a
long process to get this new club together, but I feel like everyone will be thrilled with
the results. If you are not from the area, we hope you will check us out. Be sure to
request some great new music at your local club as well!

Hey, what a great Summer for music in the States. We are seeing so much variety from
hip hop to house. The dance floor, radio and even your neighbourhood restaurants are
playing all kinds of variety.
I think this expansion of choice is partly due to a change in buying and listening habits
we currently see moving through the industry. While digital and physical music sales
continue to decline, streaming options are expanding rapidly. The quest by record
companies to reach a larger audience has presented an opportunity for a host of DJs
and producers to gain exposure they might not have received in years past.
Lets check out some new sounds for the club this month.
Iggy Azalea feat. Rita Ora Black Widow. As I mentioned in a previous article,
Iggy Azalea is continuing to dominate the airwaves releasing Black Widow as the 5th
single from her debut album. This song has a deeper, more underground sound to
match the subject, yet may not be as commercially viable as a stand-alone hit. Hopefully the remixes will filter out for the dance clubs soon.
Duke Dumont Wont Look Back. This song is going to be big in the clubs due to
the strength of the vocals. Its a soulful house record that will surely get more remixes
as the Summer progresses. The video is not as exciting due to the fact it is a little violent, but it should be tolerable for most. After a robbery, the masked thieves escape on
pogo sticks. They are chased by police on Segways to an ending that reads to be continued. Unfortunately, I am not all that excited to see part two. I think the age of the
storyboard video is over. People usually dont watch the entire video and to understand
them it is kind of a requirement. For those of you who remember videos like Cyndi
Laupers Time After Time, the story seemed so important back then. Today, people just
dont seem to follow anything for more than a minute, so whatever is on the screen
needs to be automatically interesting in a music video.
Dave Aude Feat. Andy Bell Aftermath(here We Go). Andy Bell from Erasure
teams up with the amazing producer/deejay Dave Aude on this anthem club mix thats
getting a lot of play in the gay clubs. Ralphi Rosarios remix is my favourite on this
one. I was blessed to get a video for the Ralphi mix as well. This is one happy deejay to
say the least.

by Matt Ponder
In the world of theatre there is a saying: dying is easy comedy is hard. Simply put,
it means that it is much easier to play a death scene than it is to make people laugh.
Comedy is a broad spectrum and what seems funny to one person, may not even be
the slightest bit amusing to the next. Well, Im going to paraphrase that old saying and
state an equally varied comparison: getting laid is easy making friends is hard.
We can all go out on any given night and hook up with a random person. But to
develop a relationship that transcends not only sexual but romantic feelings is
difficult. And just like the scope of comedy, friendship exists and thrives in various
planes and we all develop and perceive friendships differently.
In the gay community we socialise in divergent areas: clubs and bars, gyms and
restaurants or even on softball fields and basketball courts. There are friends whom
you make from the structured socialisation of work or school and friends you make
through other friends. There are also common interests that breed friendship,
like football, comic books or theatre. There are even friends you make through
happenstance, like that hilarious bartender who always makes your drinks.

someone is distilled into a bond even if it doesnt pan out the way you wanted. It just
means you have to climb through your hurt feelings and realise that being attracted
to someone on a friendship level can be even more rewarding. There was a reason
that you were attracted to this person in the first place, and if its not the blazing heat
of sexual attraction, then it must be because you sensed something else below the
surface.
After you pair up with someone and become BFFs, inevitably people will think youre
having sex anyway. Two gay guys being friends is the same as a straight guy and a girl
being friends. The relationships become so tight-knit that they take on characteristics
of romance and sexual chemistry. People always assume theres more going on. Cant
you hear it? Mmhmm.. Ill bet theyre just friends. My best friends and I are so close
that we have unspoken communication and know exactly what the other is thinking
or how each of us will react to any given situation. Friends know you better than any
boyfriend ever could. Maybe even better than you know yourself.
When it comes down to it, your friends are your family, and for some people their
only family. Think about your closest friends: how did you meet? What bonded you
together? Did someone initially want to get in the others pants?
Part of the homosexual experience is not only how we come together as a community
or meeting someone we cant wait to kiss, but its also about friendship and the
power it has to help us survive. Your true friends not acquaintances, not pals, not
someone you talk to in the club for 20 minutes, but true friends can save your life.
They will be the ones who break down the walls that you put up to keep other people
out. They will be there not when its convenient but when its difficult. And they will
be the ones who understand your past, believe in your future, and accept you. Just the
way you are.

You can also take the modern approach and meet people on the internet, through
Facebook and the like.
So how do you meet people online with the sole purpose of friendship? Well, I can tell
you what not to do. If you have a profile somewhere that says youre just looking for
friendship, you should probably take the pictures of your dick off of it. It lends itself
to a different kind of relationship when there are photos of you sprawled in a chair
in front of your computer fully erect...or am I wrong? I have some extremely goodlooking friends but trust me, I dont need to see their junk.
As you get to know someone you learn about them, laugh with them and confide in
them, talking about everything from soup to nuts. Literally. But while we spend time
with our friends, we scan the surroundings for the next love of our life or our next
conquest. When someone new enters the fold, we wait for our Spidey sense to tell us
how were supposed to feel. Is this a new friend? Or something else?
Most of the time we try to piece the story together through questions asked not only
of the person, but from the people who know him (or her in the case of my female
readers). If someone new is in a relationship, the gears can shift once you know that
person is already taken. If someone is single and you are attracted to them, that is
when the approach becomes delicate. This is especially true if youre not sure if this
someone is the one or if hes only interested in friendship.
You would think that the easy solution would be to say this stuff out loud, but thats
not necessarily the case. How would you feel if you were introduced to someone and
they said: Im Homo Joe and I just want to be friends. First of all, its not very subtle
and it also infers that they not only assumed you wanted to get into their pants, but
they have already rejected the notion. Nice, right?
Then theres the other side of the coin: Im Homo Joe and Im looking to hook up or
maybe get involved in a long term relationship. Can you imagine? Granted, there
are ways to allude to both of these things in a natural conversation, but things can
get sticky if one side is looking for love or sex and the other is looking for friendship,
especially if the two parties run in the same pack. The budding relationship is like a
soap bubble: colourful and fragile with the threat of popping and disappearing at any
moment.
Sometimes ties develop when one of these one-sided crushes burns out and an
amazing friendship rises from the ashes. This has happened to me a few times and
looking back, it seems it drew me closer because of it. The desire to be close to

Gossip
Cats

Food For
Thought

By Gossipcats Britain & Sydney

By Ted Fleischaker / Word Publisher

Ah, August. The dog days of Summer and sadly not a whole lot of folks we need to
dog this month, but do not get the idea that the mailbox and phone have been totally
idle, because, well, they havent. Lets start off right here at we pussies home, shall
we? And the big news here is that the rumours are true: Ivan and Ted just got back
from two weeks in Portland, Maine, had a grand time seeing old Hoosier friends
John and Dwain at their Black Boar Inn in Ogunquit (story is elsewhere in this issue)
and then stayed a few days at a less-grandiose hotel while Ivan worked at the Portland
Maine Mall Apple store where, after spending time in town with Ted, the owners (and
we cats) plan to move sometime in early 2015. That means The Word is really for sale,
as is our (and we are kind enough to let Ted & Ivan live with us) condo in downtown
Indianapolis. Anyone wanting to buy a condo or newspaper or both, please be in
touch. Now, before we pack, here are some other tidbits... It appears the three-some
idea is catching on around the Midwest as we cats have heard at least three
(ironic number, huh?) reports recently of trios on dates in various cities. We were
sworn to secrecy on names and towns, but lets just say we find it refreshing and wish
all the polys well. It can and does work, but it takes work, as does any relationship, so
keep that in mind!... Speaking of work, what IS the true tale of a well-known Indy
couple who seem to be working the gossip channels too hard as theyre reported
to be on and off more than the light switch on our porch light? We heard from
one that it was over cause his ex was having way too much fun helping anonymous
men in their time of need after finding them in an online classified section, but then
48 hours later the very same guy posted on his Facebook that they were now officially
in a relationship. We cats wish theyd figure out which end of the dick, er, ah, stick
they were playing with and get settled, but these are gay guys so chances seem slim
and nil... Speaking of nil, our chances of survival would be about that were we
not to wish local lawyer supreme Jeff McQuary a belated happy b-day. This boy
(er, ah, man) has himself a really smart and cute new relationship, a hot new car and
life seems good, which is great news to all of us who count ourselves as friends. Heres
to many more, Jeff!... And speaking of many more, how do you tell an old, old
friend when hes had too many not to text drunk? And more important when he
texts gibberish while
so doing that you
cannot understand
what hes doing or
saying and therefore
cannot reply even
if you are awake
as the drunken
texts seem to hit a
peak most weekend
nights about 11 or
midnight? A certain
Kentucky boy we
know has been
guilty of blowin up
his friends phones
now for awhile,
and has been showering his buds with midnight messages. All we cats can say is we
are fortunate to have iPhones which have do not disturb functions so we get to
see incoherent texts next morning and sleep happily thru the night!... Speaking of
sleeping, we know some mattress shops have a try before you buy plan, but
to an Ohio guy we cats know that means the mattress not the salesmen and
every boy you pick up at the club! Wed say a lot more, but this dude does have some
legal beagle friends we hear tell!... Speaking of hearing and telling, rumour has it
that a newly-minted couple this column knows well has been doing great in the
kitchen (and other rooms, too) as they have both been learning to cook via the
internet for recipes and the Food Channel for examples. Trouble is, sometimes
things just do not work out as in the photos posted and then it seems a lot of laughing
and finger-pointing goes on. We heard a recent tale about a marinated steak which one
marinated and the other cooked. Seems, from the word we got, the cook treated his
new boyfriend like a Greek God by presenting him with a burnt offering! Make ours
extra rare, please!... And finally, speaking of rare, its rare not to have a month go
by without drama from a certain Indy club, but we seem to have made it. At least
we cats think we did. Of course we were out of town with the owners checking out
Maine (and lobsters!) for two weeks, but we did have the phone forwarded. Could it
really be that drama free over there? Must be the heat! Meow!

TORONTOWe recently were in Portland, Maine and decided to cut back home via
this Canadian city, which has now passed Chicago as North Americas 4th largest
metropolitan area. Among the jungle of condos, stores, hotels and a lot of leftover sale
items we found from World Pride, which was hosted here in June, are some really nice
restaurants; top among them quite literally, is 360, the revolving eatery atop the CN
Tower, with the ground 1,151 feet below.

Page 62

This is a venue we have been to many times on visits to Toronto, and while we always
adore the view, Ivan and I usually come away with a bad feeling about high-priced
food and sloppy service. As we were recently in Toronto for a weekend with friends
and they suggested we go on a Friday night as one of them had never had the chance
to ascend the CN Tower we figured what the hell, wed go for the view, but prepared
for sky-high pricing and so-so eats, despite hearing things had been improved.
Instead of coming away disappointed, we were blown away and will be back anytime
our travels bring us to this city. The food is now gourmet, would easily rank in the top
10% of meals I have ever had, the service is superb (Many restaurants need to take
note good service without a staffer hovering over the table and being obnoxious
is a good thing.) and the view is still the best from any restaurant table in North
America, possibly only being challenged by the Signature Room at the 95th atop
Chicagos Hancock Tower.
The evening started with us arriving early, as despite a four-day advance reservation,
word is apparently out and all we could get was 9.30. We showed up about 8.30, and
they gave us admission to the other tower levels, including the glass floor observation
desk, the lounge area and outdoor observation area, where we watched the sunset over
Lake Ontario....a very pleasant way to wait and one wed planned so we could watch
the sun go down!
We returned to
the hostess stand
about 9.20, were
immediately
seated, and were
promptly greeted
by a smiling waiter
who brought bread,
water and menus.
The best deal here
one of the two prix
fixe meals...one at
$65 and one at $75.
We all chose the
more costly, but
found the whole
experience worth
every penny (though Canada no longer has cents in circulation!). The menu included
a pre-appetiser (French name for the course Amuse Bouche), an appetiser, main
with starch and veg and a full dessert. Things offered ranged from Lobster & Shrimp
Ragout to Halibut to a 10 ounce steak.
The appetisers included some awesome smoked salmon (served with cucumber salad,
capers and dill pollen, which was a new one on me), a fresh seafood chowder and
more...and everything was prepared as ordered, served with correct temperatures
and all the while we rotated to magnificent (by then night) views of the city and Lake
Ontario. One revolution is 72 minutes and dinner was about one and a half, so a real
gourmet meal in a reasonable time, but never a rushed feeling.
Bravo to the folks at the 360 for being the new and improved that was promised...and
our one-word comment is: GO! Do bring money as its not cheap, but you get what
you pay for both in the windows and on the plates these days, which was not always
the case! Info & reservations (best made in advance unless you like dinner at 9.30) are
at www.cntower.ca/en-ca/360-restaurant/overview.html
