Chapter 3

Action Tip 6
As a kid, I have heard the phrase do not interrupt me while I am speaking. These words
normally came from an older person with the intention of teaching us patience and to not
interrupt. When listening to someone else speak, it is a good idea to hold our tongue before
interrupting. As the textbook says, we tend to interrupt when we get impatient. Sometimes
when communicating, a person that is listening may want clarification, but it is better to wait
until they have finished speaking. When a person interrupts it can damage the conversation. It
is more appropriate to ask questions after the person is finished because chances are that the
person speaking, will answer questions we wanted to ask.
I like the example the author uses in the book about interrupting. One of his friends was
asked, Who? just after she stated her name to the receptionist. This makes the receptionist
seem unexperienced and not capable of providing excellent customer service. Not interrupting
a person is also important because a worker might not get all the details that will help to satisfy
the customer. The textbooks says that this trait can be seen more in men than in women.
Women will most likely share feelings while men would rather get to the point. Though, both
genders can share each others aspects. Lastly, holding back our tongue while the customer is
speaking is a good form of manners. This shows that a person can be patient and listen well to
what another person has to say.
