FLYING SAFETY
Toensurethesafety of yourself andothers, pleaseobservethefollowingprecautions:
Have regular maintenance performed. Althoughyour 7C protectsthemodel memorieswithnon-volatileEEPROM
memory(whichdoesnotrequireperiodicreplacement) andnotabattery, itstill shouldhaveregular checkupsfor wear
andtear. Werecommendsendingyour systemto theFutabaServiceCenter annually duringyour non-flying-season
for acompletecheckupandservice.
Ni-Cd Battery
Charge the batteries! (See Charging the Ni-Cd batteries, p. 14, for details.) Always recharge the transmitter and
receiver batteriesfor at least 15hoursbeforeeachflyingsession. A lowbattery will soondie, causinglossof control
andacrash. Whenyoubeginyour flyingsession, reset your 7C'sbuilt-intimer, andduringthesessionpay attention
tothedurationof usage.
Stop flying long before your batteries become low on charge. Do not rely on your radios low battery warning
systems, intended only as a precaution, to tell you when to recharge. Always check your transmitter and
receiver batteries prior to each flight.
Where to Fly
Werecommendthat you fly at arecognizedmodel airplaneflyingfield. You can findmodel clubs andfields by asking
your nearest hobby dealer, or intheUS by contactingtheAcademy of Model Aeronautics.
Youcanalsocontactthenational Academyof Model Aeronautics(AMA), whichhasmorethan2,500charteredclubsacrossthe

Always pay particular attention to the flying field's rules, as well as thepresenceandlocationof spectators, the
wind direction, and any obstacles on the field. Be very careful flying in areas near power lines, tall buildings, or
communicationfacilitiesastheremay beradiointerferenceintheir vicinity.
If youmustflyawayfromaclubfield, besuretherearenoother modelersflyingwithinathree-to-five-mile range, or youmay
losecontrol of your aircraft or causesomeoneelsetolosecontrol.
At the flying field
Before flying, be sure that the frequency you intend to fly with is not in use, and secureany frequency control
device(pin, tag, etc.) for that frequency beforeturningonyour transmitter. It is never possible to fly two or more
models on the same frequency at the same time. Eventhoughtherearedifferent types of modulation(AM, FM,
PCM), only onemodel may beflownonasinglefrequency at any onetime.
Toprevent possibledamagetoyour radiogear, turnthepower switchesonandoff intheproper sequence:
1. Pull throttlestick toidleposition, or otherwisedisarmyour motor/engine.
2. Turnonthetransmitter power andallowyour transmitter toreachitshomescreen.
3. Confirmtheproper model memory hasbeenselected.
4. Fully extendthetransmitter antenna.
5. Turnonyour receiver power.
6. Test all controls. If aservo operates abnormally, dont attempt to fly until youdeterminethecauseof theproblem.
(For PCM systems only: Test to ensure that the FailSafe settings are correct by waiting at least 2 minutes after
adjusting and then turning the transmitter off and confirming the proper surface/throttle movements. Turn the
transmitter back on.)
7. Start your engine.
8. Completeafull rangecheck (seep. 17).
9. After flying, bringyour throttlesticktoidleposition, engageanykill switchesor otherwisedisarmyour motor/engine.
10. Turnoff receiver power.
11. Turnoff transmitter power.
If youdonot turnonyour systeminthisorder, youmaydamageyour servosor control surfaces, floodyour engine, or inthe
caseof electric-poweredor gasoline-poweredmodels, theenginemayunexpectedlyturnonandcauseasevereinjury.
While you are getting ready to fly, if you place your transmitter on the ground, be sure that the wind won't tip
it over. If it is knocked over, thethrottlestick may beaccidentally moved, causing theengineto speed up. Also,
damagetoyour transmitter may occur.
Before taxiing, be sure to extend the transmitter antenna to its full length.
A collapsedantennawill reduceyour flyingrangeandcausealossof control. It isagoodideatoavoidpointingthetransmitter
antennadirectlyat themodel, sincethesignal isweakest inthat direction.
Don't fly in the rain! Water or moisturemay enter thetransmitter throughtheantennaor stick openingsandcauseerratic
operationor lossof control. If youmust flyinwet weather duringacontest, besuretocover your transmitter withaplastic
bagor waterproof barrier. Never flyif lightningisexpected.

CHARGING THE Ni-Cd BATTERIES
Charging Your Systems Batteries
1. Connect thetransmitter chargingjackandairborneNi-Cdbatteriestothetransmitter andreceiver connectorsof thecharger.
2. Plugthecharger intoawall socket.
3. Check that thecharger LEDlights.
The initial charge, and any charge after a complete discharge,
should beat least 18 hours to ensurefull charge. Thebatteries
shouldbeleft onchargefor about 15hourswhenrechargingthe
standardNR-4J, NR4F1500andNT8S600B Ni-Cdbatteries.
We recommend charging the batteries with the charger
supplied with your system. Notethattheuseof afastcharger
may damage the batteries by overheating and dramatically
reducetheir lifetime.
You should fully discharge your system's Ni-Cd batteries periodically to prevent a condition called memory. For
example, if you only maketwo flights each session, or you regularly useonly asmall amount of thebatteries' capacity, the
memoryeffectcanreducetheactual capacityevenif thebatteryisfullycharged. Youcancycleyour batterieswithacommercial
cyclingunit*, or byleavingthesystemonandexercisingtheservosbymovingthetransmitter sticksuntil thetransmitter shuts
itself off. Cyclingshouldbedoneeveryfour toeightweeks, evenduringthewinter or periodsof longstorage. Keeptrackof the
batteries' capacityduringcycling; if thereisanoticeablechange, youmayneedtoreplacethebatteries.
*Note that your 7C transmitter systemis protected fromaccidental reverse polarity, power surges and other electrical
damagebyadiode. Thetransmitter batterymust beremovedfromthesystemtocycle. Thebatteryeasilyunplugsfromthe
battery compartment andhasastandardJ -plugfor easy cycling.
DO NOT attempt tochargeyour 8-cell transmitter pack onthe4-cell receiver plugof thewall charger!

RADIO INSTALLATION
Whileyouareinstallingthebattery, receiver, switchharnessandservosintoyour model'sfuselage, pleasepayattentionto
thefollowingguidelines:
Use the supplied rubber grommets when you mount each servo. Be sure not to
over-tighten the screws. If any portionof theservocasedirectly contactsthefuselageor
the servo rails, the rubber grommets will not dampen the vibration, which can cause
mechanical wear andservofailure.
Servo Throw
Once you have installed the servos, operate each one over its full travel and check that the pushrod and output
arms do not bind or collide with each other, even at extreme trim settings. Checktoseethat eachcontrol linkagedoes
not requireundueforcetomove(if youhear aservobuzzingwhenthereisnotransmitter control motion, most likelythere
istoomuchfrictioninthecontrol or pushrod). Eventhoughtheservowill tolerateloads, any unnecessary loadappliedto
theservoarmwill drainthebattery pack quickly.
Switch Harness Installation
Whenyouarereadytoinstall theswitchharness, removetheswitchcover anduseit asatemplatetocut screwholes
andarectangular holeslightly larger thanthefull strokeof theswitch. Chooseaswitchlocationontheoppositesideof
the fuselage fromthe engine exhaust pipe, and pick a location where it cant be inadvertently turned on or off during
handlingor storage. Install theswitchsoit moveswithout restrictionandsnapsfromON toOFF andviceversa.
Receiver Antenna
It isnormal for thereceiver antennatobelonger thanthefuselage.
DO NOT cut or fold it back on itself --- cuttingor foldingchanges theelectrical lengthof theantennaandmay
reducerange. Securetheantennatothetopof thevertical fin, andlet theexcesswirelengthtrail behind. Youmayrunthe
antennainsideof anon-metallic housingwithinthefuselage, but rangemay suffer if theantennaislocatednear metal or
carbonfiber pushrodsor cables. Besuretoperformarangecheck beforeflying.
Receiver Notes
When you insert servo, switch or battery connectors into the receiver, note that each plastic housing has an
alignment tab. Be sure the alignment tab is oriented properly before inserting the connector. To remove a connector
from the receiver, pull on the connector housing rather than the wires.
If your aileron servo (or others) are too far away to plug into the receiver, use an aileron extension cord to extend the length
of the servo lead. Additional Futabaextensioncords of varyinglengths areavailablefromyour hobby dealer. Always usean
extensionof theproperlength. Avoidpluggingmultipleextensionstogethertoattainyourdesiredlength. If distanceisgreaterthan
18" or multipleor highcurrentdrawservosarebeingused, useFutabaHeavy-Dutyservoextensions.
Receiver Vibration and Waterproofing
Thereceiver containsprecisionelectronic parts. Besuretoavoidvibration, shock, andtemperatureextremes.
For protection, wrap the receiver in foam rubber or other vibration-absorbing materials. It isalsoagoodidea
to waterproof thereceiver by placingit inaplastic bagandsecuringtheopenendof thebagwitharubber bandbefore
wrappingit withfoamrubber. If youaccidentallyget moistureor fuel insidethereceiver, youmayexperienceintermittent

End Point of servo travel adjustment (E.POINT , also called EPA): the most flexible version of travel adjustment
available. It independently adjusts each end of each individual servos travel, rather than onesetting for theservo that
affectsbothdirections. Again, for CCPM helicopters, besuretoseeSWASH AFR (seep. 63) prior toadjustingendpoints.
Adjustability:

Canset eachdirectionindependently.

Reducingthepercentagesettingsreducesthetotal servothrowinthat direction.

Examples:

Adjust thethrottlehighendtoavoidbindingat thecarburetor, andlowendtoallowfor proper carburetor closure.

Adjust flapsouptravel isonly sufficient for straight andlevel flight trimming, withfull downtravel.

END POINT may beadjustedto0 tokeepaservofrommovingonedirection, suchasflapsnot intendedtoalsooperate

Retract servosarenot proportional. ChangingEND POINT will not adjust theservo.

END POINT adjustsonly theindividual servo. It will havenoeffect onany other servothat isoperatedinconjunctionwith
this servoviamix or preset programmingsuchas FLAPERON, etc. This is sothat eachindividual servocanbe
carefully fine-tunedtoavoidbindingandother conflicts. Toadjust thetotal travel of afunction suchas FLAPERON, make
theadjustmentsinthat function'scontrols. For CCPM helicopters, adjust thetotal travel of thefunction, suchascollective
pitch, inSWASH AFR.
Adjust the linkage or the END POINT? It is nearly always best to adjust your linkages to get as closeas possibleprior to
utilizingEND POINT. Thehigher theEND POINT setting, thebetter positionaccuracy and themoreservopower availableat
nearly any position (except if using digital servos). Higher END POINT values also mean longer travel timeto reach the
desiredposition, asyouareutilizingmoreof theservo'stotal travel. (For example, using50%END POINT wouldgiveyou

with travel settings of 75% (normal),
25% (slow roll) and 140% (extreme
aerobatics) andexponential settingsof
0%, +15%, and-40%respectively.
NOTE: This normal rate has no
exponential so it has a very linear,
normal feel. This slow roll rate has
positive exponential (the opposite of
what most people normally use),
which makes the servos more
responsive around center. This makes
theservos feel thesamearoundcenter
in the normal and low rates, but still
givesavery slowroll rateat full stick.
The3Drate(extremeaerobatics) hasa
very high distance of travel B nearly
twice that of the normal rate.
Therefore, using a very high negative
exponential setting softens how the
servos respond around center stick.
This makes the servos respond
similarly around center stick for a
morecomfortablefeel.
Many modelers like to set up all 3
triple rates on a single 3-position
switch, creating a "slow and pretty

ELEV-FLAP mixing (ACRO):
ELEV-FLAP mixing is thefirst pre-programmed mix we'll cover. This mix makes the

Special Additions, Functions, And Added Equipment Commonly Used On Powered Aircraft
Gyros: J ust astorquerotatesanaircraft ontherunwayduringtake-off, helicoptersstrugglewithtorquetwistingthemodel
every time throttle is applied. For many years gyroscopes have been used on model helicopters to control this. In
competitionaerobaticsandscaleaircraft competitionalike, theusefulnessof gyroshasrecentlycometolight. For in-depth
informationongyrotypes, pleaseseep. 72.
For aerobatics, gyrosonrudder andelevator fix over-rotationof snapsandspinsaswell astail wagginginstall turns. (Futaba
offersatwin-axisgyro, GYA-352, thatcontrolstwoaxeswithasinglegyro.) For 3Daerobatics(belowstall speed, suchastorque
rolls), heading-hold/AVCS gyros on rudder and elevator dramatically simplify thesemaneuvers. For scalemodels, gyros are
frequentlyusedtosimplifytake-offsandlandingsbykeepingthemodel straightduringthrottleapplication.
Always becareful if usingaheading-hold/AVCS gyro, as it will correct any changeinyawthat is not causedby
movement of the rudder (like making a turn with just aileron and elevator). Typically, modelers use heading-
hold/AVCSsettingsonlyfor specificmaneuvers, suchastake-offsandtorquerolls, thenswitchtonormal modeor
OFF for theremainder of theflight toavoidthisrisk.
Whilethe7C's ACRO programmingdoes not offer gyro-specific programming, simply adjustingtheEND POINTs of
thechannel that isusedtocontrol thegyro'sgainwill adjust thegyro'sperformanceinflight. For detailsongainandother
gyrofunctions, pleaseseetheHELI GYROprogramming, p. 72.
Retracts: Retractablelandinggear isoftenusedonscalemodelsfor increasedrealismandonhighperformancemodelsto
decreasedrag. Thegear servoistypically pluggedintoCH5, whichdefaultstoa2-positionswitchfor simplicity.
Mechanical retracts requiretheuseof aspecialized non-proportional retract servo. Retract servos go fromfull
travel onedirectionto full travel theother direction, thenmechanically holdthegear into thelockedposition. A
regular servo usedfor mechanical retracts will continueto drawfull power theentiretime, prematurely draining
thebattery andriskingcrashof your model. Endpoint will not adjust aretract servo.
Pneumatic(air driven) retractsuseastandardservotocontrol anair valvewhichdirectsair intoor out of theretract units,
movingthegear upor down. Pneumaticsareeasier toinstall but requireaddedmaintenanceof theair system.
Gear Doors: Somescalemodels withretracts also haveseparategear doors to cover thescalegear. For oneexampleof
howtooperatethegear doorsseparately fromtheretracts, pleasevisit our website: www.futaba-rc.com\faq\faq-7c.html.
Smoke Systems: Many scale and aerobatic models use smoke systems to provide increased realismor a more impressive
demonstration. Therearemanysmokesystemsavailable, withvaryingtypesof control. Mostuseaservotoincrease/decreasethe
flowof smokefluidintothespecializedsmokemuffler. Theoil isheatedinthemuffler, creatingsmoke.

exampleof asmokesystemsetup, pleasevisit our website: www.futaba-rc.com\faq\faq-7c.html.
Kill Switches: For safety reasons, it is strongly recommended that an electronic kill switch beinstalled in all gasoline-
poweredaircraft. Incaseof anytypeof in-flight problem(suchaspropfailure, exhaust vibratingoff, throttleservofailure,
radio interference), themodeler canshut theengineoff quickly andsafely inflight. Additionally, FailSafe(F/S ) settings
arerecommendedtoshut theengineoff incaseof sufficient interferencetotrigger thePCM FailSafesettings.
Lastly, an electronic kill switch set to "off" prior to theaircraft's power being shut off adds an additional safety should
someoneaccidentally turnonthemechanical kill switchontheexterior of themodel.
Bomb Drops, Paratroopers, and other Released Items: Many sport and scalemodels includeoneor moreof thesefun
add-ons. Typically, all arecontrolledby asimplemicro-switchpluggedintoCH7. TheswitchisassignedinPARAMETER.

Check receiver battery voltage! Always check voltage with a voltmeter prior to each and every engine start.
(Never assume being plugged in all night means your radio gear is ready to fly). Insufficient charge, binding servo linkages,
and other problems can result in a dangerous crash with the possibility of injury to yourself, others and property.

HELICOPTER SWASHPLATE TYPES:
The7C radios support 6basic swashplatesetups, including"singleservo" (H- 1 - most helicopters usethis type) and5
types of CCPM (cyclic and collectivepitch mixing). A "singleservo" swashplateuses oneservo for each axis: aileron,
elevator (cyclicpitch), andcollectivepitch. CCPM helicoptersutilizeacombinationof servosworkingtogether toachieve
the3axes of motion. Thereare5basic CCPM types, displayedbelow. CCPM has several advantages, themost obvious
of whichisfar lessmechanical complexitytoproperlymovetheswashplateof thehelicopter. Additionally, several servos
workinginunison(ex: HR3, all 3servostogether createelevator movement) dramaticallyincreasesthetorqueavailableas
well astheprecisionandcentering.
Pleasenotethat somehelicoptersaretypeHR3or HN3, except off by180degrees. For example, theKyosho

Caliber

is
HR3but withthe2parallel servostotherear of thehelicopter, not front. If your model'sswashplateisoff by180degrees,
you will still usethat swashplatetype, but also useSWASH AFR (p.63) to adjust thefunctions as needed until it operates
properly. Additionally, different anglesof CCPM mayalsobecreatedutilizingthefullyassignableprogrammablemixes.
(Seeour Frequently AskedQuestionsareaat www.futaba-rc.com\faq\faq-7c.html for specific examples.)
Not operating quite like you expected? Inmany CCPM installationsyouneedtoeither reversethedirectionof aspecific
function(SWASH AFR) or reverseasingleservo'sdirection(REVERSE). SeeSWASH AFR for details.(p.63)

SWASH AFR [HELI(H-2/HE3/HR3/H-3/HN3)only]:
Swashplatefunctionratesettings (SWASH AFR) reduce/increase/reversetherate(travel)
of the aileron, elevator (except H-2 ) and collective pitch functions, adjusting or
reversing the motion of all servos involved in that function, only when using that
function. Sincethesetypesutilizemultipleservostogether tocreatethecontrols, simply
adjustingaservo's REVERSE or END POINT wouldnot properly correct thetravel of any
onecontrol. SinceH-1usesoneservofor eachfunction, thereisnoneedfor AFR inH-1.
This is fairly hard to explain but easy to see, so let's set up Kyosho Caliber's swashplatesettings as an example. With
everythinginstalledper factory instructions, set themodel toHELI(HR3) . Nowlet'sadjust theswashplateproperly.
Sinceaileron always uses no morethan 2 servos, check it first. Either both operateproperly (no changeneeded), both
operatebackwards(reversethewholefunction), or oneservooperatesbackwards(reversethat servoalone).
Next check elevator. Remember, the aileron servo(s) operate correctly, so if elevator does not, we should only have 2
choicesleft - thewholefunctionneedstobereversed, or theservo(s) not sharedwithaileronneedtobereversed.
Last iscollective. If aileronandelevator areworkingproperly, theonly thingthat couldbewrongisthewholedirection
collectiveoperates(reversethewholefunction). Inour example, HR3 is180degreesoff fromtheswashplateof theCaliber.
Thecollectivepitchoperationisbackwards; but reversing all three servos would also reverse the aileron and elevator
operations. Changing the collective pitch rate, however, from+50%to-50%, will reversethecollectivepitchwithout
affectingtheaileronaction.

GYROS : Using electronics to take some of the complexity out of setups and flight.
What is a gyro? A gyroscopeis anelectronic unit that senses motionandcorrects for it. For example, if thewindblows
your helicopterstail totheleft, agyrowill sensethat motion(andconfirmthat noinput wasgiven) andwill correct for it.
How does it help in helicopter setup? A goodgyro will totally eliminatetheneedfor revo. mixing. Thegyro will sense
andcorrect theunwantedmotionfor you, soyoudon't havetospendtimetoget acomplex curveoperatingproperly.
Gyro sensor kinds: Therearemany different kindsof gyros. Early gyrosweremechanical, withaspinningdrumsimilar
to achild's gyroscopetoy. Thenext generation utilized aspecial typeof crystal, called piezoelectric, which sensed the
motionandprovidedanelectrical pulse. Thefinest gyros at thetimeof this writingareSMM technology. Thesesilicone
micro machines, or computer chips, sense the motion. SMM is far more accurate and less susceptible to inaccuracies
causedby temperaturechanges, etc.
Types of gyro responses:
Normal: sensemotionanddampenit (if thegyrorotatesoff coursefor 2seconds, it correctsfor 2seconds).
Heading-hold/AVCS: calculatetheangleof rotation(bytrackingthetime/rateof change) andthenprovidecorrection
until thesamerotationisachieved.
Stick priority: a feature on most high-end gyros. The more input given on the channel the gyro controls, the less
sensitivethegainisautomatically. Thisway, if yougivealargeinputfor astall turn, for example, thegyroturnsitself
off and does not fight thestall turn. As you easeoff therudder, thegain increases again, minimizing tail wag and
keeping the model straight. (If your gyro does not include stick priority, you can manually create it. Please see
www.futaba-rc.com\faq\faq-7c.html.)
Choosing the right gyro for your skills, your helicopter, and your budget:
Mechanical: somearestill available. They arevery challengingtoset upandnot asreliableaspiezoor SMM.
Non-Heading-HoldPiezo: thesearenowinexpensivegyrosthat arereliableandeasytoset up. Somehavedual rates
andremotegaincontrol toadjust sensitivity inflight. Lack heading-holdcapabilitiesfor precisionflying.
Heading-HoldPiezo: Until recently, thecreamof thecrop. Expensive, andmorecomplextosetup. AddsGPS-likeheading
recognition. Exhibitsminor difficultieswithtemperaturedrift(positionsettingvaryingwithunit'stemperature).
Heading-HoldSMM: 21st Centurygyrotechnology. Computer chiptechnology. Expensive, easier set up, higher durability.
Significant decrease in temperature sensitivity. Many include frame rate settings to allow faster response when using
specializeddigital servos. Examples:
GY401: Simpler set up. Ideal for learningaerobaticsthrough3D.
GY502: Better centeringthan401for moreadvancedaerobatics. Ideal throughClassIII competition.
GY601: Exceptional center. Extremely fast responsetime. Requiresspecializedservo.
GYRO: simplifies adjusting/selectingthegyrosensitivity, andcanprovidemorethan2gyrogainsettings. (Thehigher the
gain, themorecorrection thegyro provides and the"softer" or less responsivethehelicopter feels.) This function
makesthebest possibleuseof theinflight adjustablegainof most gyros..
