Format Guidelines

1 inch margins
12 point, Times New Roman
Double spaced (block quotes are single spaced)
Page numbers
o Not on title page
o Lowercase Roman numerals in front matter (preface, etc.)
o Normal numbers for main body
o First page: Number is centered as footer; all others: Aligned right as
header
Block quotes are quotes of five or more lines.
o Single spaced
o Indented
o No quotation marks
o Footnote at the end
Paper should have three main sections:
1. Title page
Two types: Class paper & dissertation
No page numbers
2. Main body
No strict format for headings and/or subheadings
Uses footnotes
3. Biblioraphy
Footnotes
o Can refer to the original source of information
o Can further explain a section of text
o Can refer to further information on a subject
o First footnote includes full bibliographical info.
Later footnotes us only authors name, title.
Ibid. used for consecutive citations.
Ibid, page number if different page of source.
o 10 or 12 point font.
o Single spaced.
o Indent first line.
Bibliography
o Bibliography centered at the top of the page
o Alphabetical order by last name
o Hanging indent
