Sources of stress

What is the source of stress? Stress is caused by a stressor.

There are 5 major stressors in an individual`s life:

Personal life,
Job responsibilities,
Membership in work groups and organizations,
Work-life balance,
Environmental uncertainty.

Managing stress
There are two major ways or approaches of dealing/coping with stress:

- Problemfocused approach: focuses on the steps people take to deal
directly with and act on the source of stress. Examples for individuals
under this approach include time management, role negotiation, getting
help from a mentor. For organizations examples are job redesign and
rotation, job security, company day care and family friendly benefits.

- Emotionfocused approach: relates to the steps people take to deal with
and control their stressful feelings and emotions. Examples under this
approach include exercise, meditation, clinical counselling. Here for
organizations examples include organization support, employee fitness
centers, employee assistance programs.
