Q1
A system programming error in an
administrative application is causing
workstations to lock up in the HR department. A
software patch will fix this issue. When should
the patch be done?
A. immediately
B. that evening
C. that weekend
D. when normally scheduled
Q1
A. This will affect too many users adversely.
B. Resources may not be available, and a problem
with patching may affect a large number of users.
C. This makes more time available for system
patch and testing without impacting the users.
D. This should be handled on an urgent basis.
Q2
An organization that negotiates with vendors for
preferential pricing of products and services on
behalf of its membership is a
A. GPO.
B. PPO.
C. PPS.
D. APC.
Q2
A. GPO is a Group Purchasing Organization that
operates on behalf of its members to optimize
purchase prices.
B. PPO is a Preferred Provider Organization by
which healthcare insurers extend benefits to
their membership.
C. PPS is a Prospective Payment System, not an
organization.
D. APC is an Ambulatory Procedure Code, which
is an element of the PPS.
Q3
A CIO has been asked to give an IT strategic plan
update to the Board of Directors. Which of the
following is the BEST approach when presenting
a report?
A. slide presentation with a hard copy of the
executive summary
B. slide presentation with a hard copy of the IT
strategic plan
C. oral presentation with a hard copy of the
executive summary
D. oral presentation with a hard copy of the IT
strategic plan
Q3
A. When presenting reports, it is more effective to provide visual
presentation to the intended audience. Board of Director meetings
require brevity while still providing enough relevant information
for the Board. A visual presentation allows the presenter to
explain the key points and provides an opportunity to the
audience to ask questions on specific areas.
B. This is acceptable, but the Board would prefer an executive
summary rather than the IT strategic plan. The strategic plan is
a business document that determines the organizational mission,
vision, and objective over the next several years. It does not
explain the achievements and progress.
C. It would be preferable to have visual aids when presenting to
the Board.
D. It would be preferable to have visual aids when presenting to
the Board.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Certification helps employers evaluate potential new
hires, analyze job performance, evaluate employees,
select contractors, market services, and motivate
employees to enhance their skills and knowledge.
Evidence that the certificate holder has demonstrated
a certain level of job-related knowledge, skills and
abilities.
Documented level of assurance that employees are
competent in work practices.
Passing the CPHIMS examination demonstrates
mastery of a well-defined body of knowledge
considered important to competent practice in today's
healthcare information and management systems
field.
WHAT DOES CPHIMS CERTIFICATION
INVOLVE?
Eligibility requirements for participation in the
program;
A 115-item multiple-choice examination that tests
tasks that are performed regularly in practice and are
considered important to competent practice; and
A renewal requirement. Certification is valid for three
years at which time it must be renewed through
successful retest or documentation of participation in
continuing professional education.
Start the process by downloading the Candidate
Handbook and Application from the HIMSS web site
(www.himss.org/getcertified).
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO TAKE THE CPHIMS
EXAMINATION?
Baccalaureate degree and five years of
associated information and management systems
experience*, three of those years in healthcare.
Graduate degree and three years of associated
information and management systems
experience*, two of those years in healthcare.
WHAT IS TESTED ON THE CPHIMS
EXAMINATION?
The CPHIMS examination tests tasks that, through a
job analysis, were identified as being performed
regularly in practice and important to competent
practice.
The CPHIMS Content Outline groups tasks to be
tested into major content categories, and provides the
number of items dedicated to each category.
The outline also contains the number of test items
dedicated to testing recall or recognition of facts,
comprehension or application of knowledge, and
analysis or synthesis of information used to problem-
solve.
The CPHIMS examination consists of 115 multiple-
choice test items, presented during a 2-hour test
session. Fifteen of these items are "pretest" items that
do not affect your score.
HOW DO I STUDY FOR THE CPHIMS
EXAMINATION? IS A PRACTICE TEST AVAILABLE?
Successful candidates suggest that study should
begin with review of the CPHIMS examination
content outline to identify those tasks for which
your knowledge level is not particularly strong.
The online Self-Assessment Examination (SAE),
or practice test, is currently available for
CPHIMS candidates.
This practice test was developed by HIMSS to
simulate the CPHIMS certification examination
in content, cognitive level, difficulty and format.
After taking the SAE, you will receive valuable,
pragmatic feedback in detailed score reports. For
information on how to purchase the CPHIMS
SAE, visit www.himss.org/getcertified.
REVIEW MATERIAL
Self Assessment Exam
The questions on the SAE are presented in the same
computer format as the CPHIMS examination.
This 100-question online practice examination was
designed to match the cognitive and content areas of
the CPHIMS examination.
The SAE conforms to the exam specification, both in
terms of content and average difficulty level.
You may take the test in a 2-hour period to simulate
the exam or over a 90 day period from the time of
purchase. Once you complete the SAE, you will be
emailed the exam results and score reports.
$60 for HIMSS members and $75 for non-members.
