Problem Statement

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been one of the greatest threats to human health
and development. Researches have been made on the antidote of this virus for how many years
already. One of the latest discovery is an antiretroviral treatment which can suppress HIV and can
delay the illness for many years however it cannot clear the virus completely.
Maahiya (Mimosa pudica) is a common weed widely distributed in the !hilippines especially in
various areas of Mindanao. "he plant has been proven to have great medicinal value. #ach part of the
plant has different uses. "he roots are used as diuretic$ also for dysentery and dysmenorrhea.
!owdered seeds and bruised leaves are applied to wounds and sores. Hence$ this study aims to
determine the effectivity of Maahiya (Mimosa pudica) against HIV. %lso to identify the chemical
substances present in Maahiya (Mimosa pudica) and in what parts of the plants that can cure the
disease.
