ZENER DIODE CHARACTERISTICS

AIM: To observe and draw the regulator characteristics of a zener diode at supply and load
side.

THEORY:
, zener diode is heavily doped p'n 1unction diode2 specially -ade to operate in the
brea3 down region. , p'n 1unction diode nor-ally does not conduct when reverse biased. /ut
if the reverse bias is increased2 at a particular voltage it starts conducting heavily. This
voltage is called /rea3 down "oltage. 4igh current through the diode can per-anently
da-age the device. To avoid high current2 we connect a resistor in series with zener diode.
5nce the diode starts conducting it -aintains al-ost constant voltage across the ter-inals
whatever -ay be the current through it2 i.e.2 it has very low dyna-ic resistance. 6t is used in
voltage regulators.
