SNETHEN FAMILY WOMENS HISTORY

By Gary Snethen,
The Ninth Snethen

INTRODUCTION
This chapter was written as a companion piece to the Snethen Family History: Short
Biographies of Ten Generations of Snethen Family Men and Notable Uncles and Nephews from
1597-1964 Beginning with the Grandfather of the First Snethen and Continuing to the Father of
the Author of this Work, which concentrated primarily on the males of the family line. This
current work is focused on the females of the same family line, i.e. those who were the sisters
and daughters of the males. The wives and mothers were mentioned in the first work and are
alluded to here as well, but as they were Snethens by marriage and not by blood, they are
treated peripherally rather than centrally. Also, the order here is reversed, and the characters
are treated from most recent to most ancient rather than the other way around.

COMMENTARY:
It appears to me that Nicholas Snethen I, son of the first Snethen and older brother of
the second Snethen, may have first married Rachel, the woman who later became the second
Snethens wife and had a child with her who was named Jeremiah. Something happened,
perhaps an accident took the childs life, that caused Nicholas I to leave New Jersey and
abandon his family there. Maybe there was some kind of divorce. Joseph, Jr. then took Rachel
for his wife and had additional children with her while Nicholas moved back to New York,
invented the story about being the son of an immigrant widow and married Deborah Weeks. I
am basing this on the fact that Ancestry.com lists Rachel as the name of the spouse of both
Nicholas I and Joseph, Jr., Jeremiah as the name of Nicholas Is only child, and then loses
contact with both Nicholas I and the child, and on the fact that Ancestry.com lists the father of
Barack Snethen incorrectly as Nicholas Sneathan even though it lists his two children correctly
as Snethen, and that it lists this Nicholas Sneathans parents as unavailable. Ancestry.com
doesnt quite have it figured out. My opinion, of course, is that Ancestry.coms Nicholas
Sneathan, the father of Barack, and Nicholas Snethen, the son of Joseph, Sr. are, in fact, one
and the same person.
Furthermore, it is interesting to note that none other than Benjamin Franklins first
pseudonym was a woman named Silence Dogood, whom Franklin presented as a widow and
mother recently arrived in the colonies. Such a personality obviously elicited a natural, positive
sympathy and goodwill among colonists of good standing. This fact seems to lend credence to
my notion that Nicholas I made up the story of being an immigrant widows son to gain
sympathy with his community.
Finally, contributing to the notion that the line of Nicholas Snethen, the US House
Chaplain leads all the way back to Claes and Marie Sneden rather than to some unnamed
immigrant widow is the fact that two of their daughters married a man named Garrett and that
Nicholas, the chaplain, named one of his sons Worthington Garrettson.
