ABSTRACT
The basic mechanical design of boiler or turbine has not changed much over the
years. Nor has the modified Rankine steam cycle for coal-fired thermal power
plants been modified any further. But modern power plants indeed differ radically
from old counterparts as far as ontrol ! "nstrumentation is concerned# thanks to
the fast-growing electronics and computer industries as well as emerging
$istributed ontrol %ystem concepts.
ma&$N' is a state-of-the-art $istributed ontrol %ystem developed by (etso
'utomation# )% for comprehensive power plant automation. The system has many
uni*ue features like decentrali+ed control# modularity of software and hardware#
high-speed network with open architecture# subscription-based data transfer and a
user-friendly man-machine interface.
This pro,ect is an attempt to compile the salient features of the ma&$N'
$istributed ontrol %ystem. This report encompasses the vast system at a shallow
depth# keeping simplicity in mind. 'fter the introduction to ma&$N'# the report
discusses hardware in the form of network architecture# distributed processing
units# input-output subsystem and workstations. Then it covers the software in the
form of building blocks and configuration tools.
