Grade Level: 2
nd

Common Core: CCSS.Math.Content.2.G.A.1 Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such
as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals,
pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
Book: Maccarone, D. (1998). Three pigs, one wolf, and seven magic shapes. Scholastic Reader: Cartwheel
Productions.
Materials: The book Three pigs, One Wolf, and Seven Magic Shapes, ruler, paper, pencil, and coloring
utensils.
Description of Activity: After reading the above book, we will discuss as a class the different shapes that
we have learned. We will go over these shapes thoroughly so that the students are equipped for their
assignment. I will show the students an example of the assignment that we will be completing. The task
is for the students to use the shapes that we learned about such as triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons,
hexagons, and cubes to design a picture. Examples could include the students house, the playground,
their favorite place to shop, etc. The catch is that everything in the picture has to be drawn as a shape!
Students can use as many shapes as they want, but they must include the 5 shapes from the Common
Core Standards and the book. Students can use rulers to form their shapes cleanly. They will also color
their picture once they have completed all their shapes! The students will then present their picture to
the class.
