Hydrotesting Guide for Engineers

This document provides instructions for hydrostatic testing of piping works for an ammonia mitigation project at an existing water treatment plant. The piping will be tested in stages, starting at 25% of the test pressure and increasing to 50%, 75%, and 100% of the test pressure over 15 minute intervals. At each stage, the piping will be checked for leaks and abnormalities before increasing the pressure. The final pressure test at 100% of the test pressure must be held for 2 hours, with an allowable pressure drop of no more than 2 psi over that time. Table 1.0 lists the hydrostatic test pressures for different systems included in the project.

PROJECT : PIPING WORKS FOR THE PROPOSED AMMONIA MITIGATION OF THE

EXISTING 100MLD PUTATAN WTP

UPSTREAM IMPROVEMENT OF EXISTING 100MLD PUTATAN WTP
CONTRACT # : WS-13-WTP-02 & WS-13-WTP-03

PROJECT LOCATION : MAYNILAD WATER TREATMENT PLANT, PUTATAN, MUNTINLUPA CITY

HYDROSTATIC TESTING

1. Laminated joints should be allowed to cure for 12 to 15 hours before hydrotesting can be
performed.

2. Establish a test setting and the location of monitoring instruments (gauges). Please see table 1.0
below for the testing pressure per area.

3. Inspect the entire assembly to be tested, making sure that everything is in order. All opening
should be covered.

4. Carefully fill the assembly with water observing it for any sign of leaks or any abnormal
occurrences.

5. When the entire assembly has been filled up with water, open the highest point (at the
connection for air release valve) to release air and close again when water is already coming
out.

6. Start pressure build-up to 25% of the test pressure and hold for 15 minutes. Check for leaks or
any abnormalities. Record the result.

7. Increase pressure to 50% and hold for 15 minutes. Check for leaks or any abnormalities. Record
the result.

8. Increase pressure to 75% and hold for 15 minutes. Check for leaks, pressure drop and any
abnormalities.

9. Increase pressure to 100% and hold pressure for 2 hours. Check for leaks, pressure drop and any
abnormalities. Allowable pressure drop is 2psi. Outside temperature will also affect the final
pressure drop and should also be considered. Record the results.

10. Carefully flush the assembly to remove the water.
