Susan: Hi. Welcome back to Susan's Gardening Show. I'm Susan, and we're ready to take
our next caller. We have ark !rom Seattle. "re you still there, ark#ark: $h. %eah,
but maybe not !or long.
Susan: So, how can we hel& you today#
ark: 'kay. $h, my wi!e is really intogardening, and about !ive years ago, she received a
beauti!ul climbing rose bush . . . I think an "gatha (hristie )*hat's a nice one.+ !rom her
mother who has &assed away. "nyway, the rose &lant seems to be on its last leg.
Susan: ,eally# -omally, that rose is really .uite hardy )I know.+, and it's very disease/
resistant, too. )I know.+
ark: %eah. Well, this situation IS-'* normal. %ou see about a week ago, I was doing
some yard work, and I was using some weed killer )$H/oh.+, yeah, to try to get rid o!
some terrible weeds and . . .
Susan: 0id you s&ray the roses#
ark: $h, well, not exactly. I set the s&ray container down near the roses while I was
trimming a bush, and the container must have gotten knocked over, and the weed killer
soaked into the ground near the roses.
Susan: How much weed killer are you talking about#
ark: $h, about six or seven .uarts 1about six liters or 2.3 gallons4, I think. )'h, that's a
lot.+ %ou know, I mean when you &ut . . .
Susan: "nd the roses# What do they look like now#
ark: 'h, 0ead, real dead. 0ead as a doornail dead, but my wi!e hasn't seen them yet.
Susan: ,eally# What have you done# 5lind!olded her#
ark: Well, I've ke&t her away !rom that side o! the house where the roses are, but she is
bound to see them at some &oint.
Susan: %eah, yeah. %ou've got a &roblem.
ark: I mean, is there anything I can do to revive them#
Susan: -ot unless you're a magician.
ark: Well, can you recommend a .uick/growing variety that can take its &lace#
Susan: arc. I'm sorry. %ou've made a mistake . . . " big mistake.
ark: . . . exce&t that my wi!e warned me this could ha&&en . . . 'h, man.
Susan: 'h, shoot. 6isten. %ou made a blunder. " big mistake. " really big mistake. 5ut
unless you wi!e goes on vacation !or a cou&le o! years, you're not going to be able to
re&lace the roses that !ast.
ark: So, any recommendation# I mean, what do I do#
Susan: %ou need to talk to her.
ark: "re you kidding# %ou don't know my wi!e.
Susan: I'm sorry. 6ook. %ou've waited long enough. 0on't let the grass grow around your
!eet. Say something, but be sure to hide the garden shears be!ore you do. 7nell down8 ask
!or !orgiveness now.
ark: 5ut that's what I did when I killed her &ri9ed a&&le tree last year.
Susan: -o way. ,eally#
ark: 'h, man. 'h: She's coming in !rom outside )'h, no, oh no.+.
Susan: 'ne !inal word: Hide the weed killer. )5ut . . .+ *hanks, ark. *hat's all the time
