place a %undamental amount o% trust in %oods that have been certi&ed as organic by the
!"! +epartment o% Agriculture and its National Organics Program!
,ave you ever have noticed that organically grown %ruits and vegetables are being
segregated %rom conventionally grown %oods in your local mar(et- .his is because there is
a /10$000 &ne i% %ood represented as organic is contaminated with non0organic
compounds! "eparate tubs are used to trim and clean the produce and i% organic %oods
are displayed in an area that previously displayed non0organic produce$ the mats on
which they are placed must be replaced and the area thoroughly cleaned with a mild
bleach solution! 1% these %oods accidentally become contaminated during their handling$
they are sold as conventional 2non0organic3 produce!
