Senator Rosenberg
By Christopher Lukasik
On March 28, 2014 at 6pm, Massachusetts State
Senator Stan Rosenberg became an honorary member of
our chapter! Senator Rosenberg was chosen by the Delta Delta
chapter to become an honorary member because of his contributions
to the Band program since becoming an alumnus of UMass in 1977. He
played an integral role in the Universitys Marching Band participation
in the 2013 Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
Honorary Membership in Tau Beta Sigma is given to those who make
major contributions to college and university band programs; Senator
Rosenberg did and continues to do exactly that.
I got the honor to be his Big Sister. I gave him the bid in
September 2013 and through working with his office, we were able to
find a date that worked for both him and the active chapter. We had
many alumni and honorary members of the Delta Delta chapter in
attendance on March 28th including Mikhaela Houston, Dr. John
Jenkins, and Dr. Timothy Anderson! The ritual went extremely well,
and Senator Rosenberg was so
happy to become an honorary
Sister! After the event, the Sisters,
along with some Brothers of
Epsilon Nu, went to have a formal
banquet at the Amherst Brewing
Company, and the food was
amazing! The night went flawlessly
and we became a stronger chapter
because of it.

From the Desk of the President

It has been a long year for Delta Delta. We had a very busy band season in the fall which ended with a once in
a lifetime performance in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The UMMB made their national TV debut and
will also be on TV again the 20th of April for a ceremony before the Red Sox game. As sisters and band
members, we have made some incredible progress and will only continue to grow in coming years. I have
absolutely loved being President this past year and would not change one minute of it. It hasn't always been
easy, especially bringing 11 new sisters into our bond in the fall! It's been a ton of fun and I could not have
done anything without the help of my executive board and other sisters as my support system. This year was
a learning experience for us all. It was very busy but also a ton of fun. We welcomed many new sisters active
as well as honorary sisters into our very special bond. We have strengthened our joint relations significantly
with the help of more joint social events as well as service events and fundraisers. Every sister worked to the
best of their ability to make themselves better people this semester and it truly showed. We all communicated

better and more often and that really helped us to become so successful this year. We had some changes
made to our membership process, but the change was definitely welcomed with open arms. It never hurts to
reevaluate yourselves and come out stronger on the other side.

I am truly sad to leave the sisterhood and UMass when I graduate in
May. I do look forward to coming back as an alumni and try to stay
as connected as possible with everyone.
I know I will be leaving the chapter in good hands when we select
our new officers. We do have 2 sisters on District Council, AND we
won the Spirit Award at District Convention! I can't wait to see what
we do next year!
It was truly an honor to be Delta Delta's president this past year.

Julia Givens

From the Desk of the
Vice President of Service
By Katie Jo Prendella
During the Spring semester we continued our
traditional projects such as receptions and Relay for
Life. While we continued to host receptions after
every major music event we also hosted a larger one
for the Concert Band. Relay for Life also occurs in the
Spring and we plan to have great participation and
reach our fundraising goals. We furthered our
community engagement by starting the
communication for future projects. For example we
reached out to the Girl Scouts and made the
connections to have an event with them next Spring.
We also reached out to such groups as Girls Inc. and
local hospitals in the hope that we can work with
their organizations in the future. We had wonderful
joint projects aimed specifically at assisting the
bands success in the future. We donated stands to
the Music Department, we provided enough stands to
accommodate both practice rooms and classrooms in
the FAC. We also donated mirrors to Grinnell, the
Drumline building. Finally, we continued our Women
in Music Speaker Series by having several great
events throughout the semester, which can be
further read about in the Women in Music Article
featured in this article.

From the Desk of the Historian and Groove
& Funk Chair
By Kirsten Peterson

The Northeast District Convention 2014 held at the University
of Connecticut seems like it happened only a day ago and the
end of the semester seems to close to bear so I begin
reflecting on my final days in office. I am sure we have all
experienced the excitement of a new adventure in the near
future but the dread of leaving what we have grown
comfortable with. As the two year historian and groove &
funk chair, I face this task at hand.
While in office I have seen four membership candidate
classes become sisters of our fine chapter and documented
their evolution as they became sisters to their first offices,
chairs, or even district offices. History is everything; it is what
we look at in amazement in old photos, scrapbooks, and
stories from our alumni. It is what has just occurred in this
very moment. It is the founding of this chapter and everything
it is to become and achieve.
We all unite together supporting service and women in
music, we create bonds that encompass this nation with
people we have never met but hope to meet. Whether its our
service projects to the band and community, our bonding
events, proudly singing our songs of sorority and university,
our leadership, or even our stepping, we are a constant
presence and influence to those around us. Sorry if I seem to
be dragging on here, but through my leadership opportunities
in the sisterhood I have learned more than I have ever
thought I would learn about the organization and myself.

Travel season!
By Brianna Hurley
Travel season as a neophyte definitely took me by surprise. I was not expecting the long days, the long car
rides, and the blow to my paycheck as I spent a million dollars buying all the awesome crafts they had for
sale. But I also didn't expect to have as much fun as I did. I met so many new sisters during travel season
whom I never would have met if I didn't go. I became friends with many sisters from Marist College, our little
sister chapter, as they were just a name in my MC packet from last semester before I went to northerns. It was
really special and one of my favorite parts.
Centrals was my first precinct and it was so much fun. I would say it was my favorite but every traveling
event was awesome and became my favorite for a new reason! Centrals was held at West Chester University,
the school Mr. Parks went to. That alone was really exciting! That precinct was great because we had some
great bonding time with the epsilon nu brothers. I'll never forget how much fun we had sharing a meal with
them. It was great! It was also the first time I wobbled, oh my! It was really fun and now whenever I hear the
song I think of .

Next came Northerns held at Syracuse University. The sisters there were fantastic and well organized which
made the day seem a little less long. I loved Northerns because this was the precinct that I met the most
sisters. Here I met sisters from URI who were incredibly friendly and I also became friends with sisters from
Marist. It was awesome! I learned so much about the sisters there as well as the organization as a whole.

Finally we have districts. What a weekend to
remember! Here I went to my first election, my first
Northeast District ritual, my first everything! I'm
speechless when it comes to describing my thoughts
on districts. All I can say is that it was absolutely
incredible. Ritual. I loved ritual. It was hands down my
favorite part of districts because it was so special.
There was so much love in the room that you could
almost see it in the air. I just loved it. Elections were
awesome too! My big sister, Morgan McGrane was our
delegate so it was really exciting to watch her do
something new in the sisterhood. Here, 2 of our own sisters became part of the NED council, Shannon Mackey
and Christopher Lukasik, and we are confident in their ability to do great things there. Lastly, one of my
favorite parts of districts was winning the spirit award. It was really exciting to be noticed for our enthusiasm
and love for Tau Beta Sigma. It was a really special moment and I'll never forget it.

I cannot wait to do this all again next spring. It was a fantastic experience and I would not change a second if
it for the world!
From the Desk of the Recording Secretary
By Christopher Lukasik
"Ok so you'll text the President, then the President will text the Exec Board and each exec member will have 3 Sisters to text,
then Big Sisters will text their littles." That was the common story for the phone tree, up until I became the Recording
Secretary. I found this new app for your iPhone (thanks to Western District Counselor, Trevor Angood) where you send a
message over the app and it mass texts everyone that's subscribed to it! You can have a smart phone or a not so smart phone,
it doesn't matter, it works for everyone! It's literally amazing and it has fixed a lot of the miscommunication issues that we've
had! Delta Delta has come leaps and bounds with our communication problems that we identified at the beginning of last
semester, and I can tell that the phone tree fix was part of that! Now if someone has a phone tree message, they would text me
and ask me to send a message over about whatever they want to get to the chapter, and from the moment I hit send it takes
about 10 seconds to get to everyone. #communication!

From the Desk of the Treasurer
By Morgan McGrane

This semester was a great time of growth in the Delta Delta chapter. The
chapter was active in helping the fundraising committee prepare for our
biggest fundraising time, District Convention. We had craft nights as means
to create things to sell, but it was good fun and a good de-stressor. The items
sold were a great success at the University of Connecticut and helped
promote our chapter. Before Districts, the sisters held a bake-sale outside of
our local Walmart. This too was a great success due to active sister
participation and the community's support of UMass bands! There are ideas
in the works for future fundraising initiatives and I look forward to sharing
them with the community to better our chapter.
From the Desk of the Parliamentarian
As my time as the Delta Delta Parliamentarian draws to a close, I can honestly say that
we had a very successful semester in terms of updating our Chapter Documents. We
have made measurable steps to updating both our Chapter Operations Manual and
our Constitution. At the last set of meetings this year, the chapter will pass updates to
both documents. There has also been an increase in the understanding of
parliamentary procedure and Roberts Rules of Order. Sisters are now actively
involved in learning the information and ask questions when they do not understand
concepts, a change from previous years. I hope that the Chapter continuous to grow in
its understanding of Parliamentary Procedure next year!
Respectfully,

Tech, in order to put on a great show at the end of this month. The Delta Delta step team
is also excited to announce that it will be showcasing a new chapter step as well.
Additionally, the UMass Feature Twirlers will also be performing along with a variety of
other ensembles from the surrounding areas.
The 28th annual Color in the Cage event will take place this year on Saturday,
April 26, starting at 2:00 PM in the Curry Hicks Cage on the University of Massachusetts
Amherst campus.

Maddie Gordon
Hi my name is Maddie Gordon! I am a freshman from
Franklin, Massachusetts. I am currently undeclared but
my plan is to major in math and double minor in
education and Spanish with the hope of getting a Masters
in Elementary Education in five years. I became a
Membership Candidate because I want to help the band
as much as it has helped me throughout my life. Band is a
passion of mine and I think Tau Beta Sigma is a great way
to get involved. I play the flute in Marching Band and
Concert Band and I am also learning how to twirl in
UMasss Twirler Tech class. My proudest band
achievement is receiving the John Philip Sousa Band
Award. Aside from band I also like tennis, food, and video
games. I am looking forward to spending the rest of my
college career with the band and (hopefully) Tau Beta
Sigma!
MaryCatherine Lynch
My name is MaryCatherine Lynch and I am a
sophomore from Millis, MA. I am in the Isenberg School
of Management and my major is Hospitality and
Tourism Management. I am a member of the tuba
section in the UMMB and I play trombone in the Hoop
Band and euphonium in the Concert Band. I am very
excited to be a membership candidate for TBS. I have
loved my process and especially getting to know all of
the awesome sisters! Giving back to the band is
something I truly love and I hope to continue serving
with the sisters of Tau Beta Sigma!
Emily Stetson
Hi! My name is Emily Stetson. Im a freshman
Political Science major and Chinese minor at
UMass Amherst aspiring for a career in
International Relations. Im originally from
Brockton, Massachusetts. Currently Im a
mellophone in the Minuteman Marching band,
and I also participate in concert band on French
horn. Ive always been really involved in band,
so being and MC and learning about Tau Beta
Sigma has been a great experience that has
made me feel a lot closer to the band. I hope to
continue my involvement with the band and the
organization in the future!
Jenna Woodward
My name is Jenna Woodward! I am currently a
freshman from Burlington, CT. I am double
major in Food Science (concentration in food
safety) and Public Health on the science track
and am also in the 5 year masters program for
Food Science with the hopes of working for the
Center of Disease Control in the Foodborne
Illness and Outbreak branches. I became an MC
so I could serve and give back to the band as it
has done wonders for me ever since I began
playing the flute in 4th grade and joined the
flag squad in high school and now the Color
Guard in the UMass Marching Band. I look
forward to continuing to get to know the sisters
and the band as I continue here at UMass!
On Saturday April 12th, the four
lovely ladies of the Gamma Mu
class became sisters of Tau Beta
Sigma! We are so incredibly
proud of all of their hard work
and are so excited to welcome
them into the bond. <3

Women in Music
By Morgan McGrane
This semester we have been honored to have several guest speakers for our Women in Music speaker series, which is a
national initiative. The first of our guests was Mary Paris, the UMass Marching Band's secretary, who is now an honorary of
the Delta Delta chapter. She spoke of being a woman in the administrative aspect of marching band. Our next speaker was
Chris Sirard, an honorary of the chapter, and a past member and instructor of the UMass color guard. She spoke of her career
in music and how to conquer your fears of new opportunities. Our last speaker in this semester's series was Mrs. Jean Parks,
who is a director at an inter-city school. She spoke to us of how to help students in such school districts and her trials as a
woman who was part of the first class at West Chester University, her alma mater, to allow women into their marching band
program. These three women are an inspiration and had wonderful stories to relay to the sisters of Delta Delta. They are a
valuable asset to the band society and we were blessed to have them be able to speak to us.
Concert Band
By Cecelia Barnes
In the spring semester of 2014, 18 sisters and 3 MC's of our
chapter participated in our concert band. Conducted by our
band director Timothy Todd Anderson, we played a range of
pieces including a march and large ensemble orchestral piece
arranged for band. Here at UMass, concert band is a great
way for non-music major sisters to participate in a large
ensemble who otherwise would have no chance to. Everyday
at 4:40 the first note is played by the band, but for the sisters
band starts at 4, which is when we start our service of setting
up stands and chairs. Then the rest of the ensemble will
trickle in and start warming up, then rehearsal starts. With
some lip slur exercises for the brass and slur two tongue
two's for the woodwinds, the band is ready to go! With our
concert on April 6thhave been more excited to not only
perform our repertoire for the semester, but to also play with
the local community band, the Florence Community Band of
Amherst. There were smiles all around as the Florence
Community Band joined us to play our final piece, an
arrangement of Amazing Grace. Musicians old and young
came together to create beautiful music, and create it we did.
Hoop (Hey-O) Band
The UMass Hoop Band had a great run this season, thanks
to some great play by the UMass Mens Basketball team!
Both the Mens and Womens teams made it into the A-10
tournament and the Mens team made it to second round of
the NCAA tournament. We added some great new charts,
such as The Man by Aloe Blacc, Suit and Tie by Justin
Timberlake and My Songs Know What You Did in the
Dark by Fallout Boy. The Hoop Band was fortunate
enough to perform at the Mass Mutual Center in
Springfield, Richmond Virginia, the Barclays Center in
Brooklyn, and PNC Arena in Raleigh North Carolina. With
three starters and many members of the Hoop Band
returning, it looks like next season will be an exciting one
for UMass Basketball and the UMass Hoop Band!

From the Desk of the Vice President of
Membership
I am honored to have served at the Vice President of Membership for
this year. It is an office that I have always have aspired to. Being a
super senior, I got to see many sister grows and succeed in this
position, so I knew I had some big shoes to fill. At retreat before
band camp started, we discussed what it means to actively recruit;
getting to know your sections, being positive at band camp, seeking
out prospective MC's to bring to rush. We made sure sisters
understood that we all have a major part in recruiting our future.
After a longer and later rush period, we had the most successful
Informational Tea that I have seen during my time at UMass. The
Gamma Lambda class is now eleven strong and are doing absolutely
amazing in the sisterhood. In the Spring, we had a smaller MC class
of four, but equally just as strong. It has been a joy helping them
through their process and watching them grow with each week.
After this year, I am proud to say that we have welcomed fifteen
new sisters in the bond. On a district level, I have loved traveling and
attending VPM officer round tables. I got to hear from VPM's all
across the district and communicate ideas and problem solving skills
with them. Also, post membership education had been finalizes, and
I believe our new system is here to stay, since it helps everyone
retain information while adapting to different sisters learning styles.
I can honestly say that this office had allowed me to grow into
stronger person. It was very challenging at times, but also more
rewarding than I ever though possible. Watching the excitement and
enthusiasm of the new sisters gives me all the confidence in the
world that the bond is as strong as ever.
MLITB,

From the Desk of the Assistant Vice
President of Membership
This semester I had the pleasure of serving as the
AVPM for Delta Delta. My biggest worry was
whether or not PME would be successful. Despite
this, I was faced with my chapter who knew their
information almost flawlessly. I was extremely
excited to have four wonderful people interested in
becoming Sisters and working with them
throughout their MC process. I could not have been
more proud of them for all of their hard work and
success and now welcome them as Sisters in the
bond.

Letter from the Editor/Corresponding Secretary

My what a year this has been! From a packed marching band season to
an exciting travel season, this has been by far one of my favorite years
at UMass. This year, I was elected as the Northeast District Secretary
for Tau Beta Sigma and I could not be more excited to work with the
NED and continue to learn about and get to know other chapters on a
more personal level. I have enjoyed my time as Corresponding
Secretary for Delta Delta over the past year by staying in touch with
other chapters, keeping our lovely alumni up to date, and putting
together our semesterly newsletter, Delta Delta Delivers! I hope you
have enjoyed this edition, thank you for reading, and I hope you have a
wonderful summer!
