Sheryl Ehrman,
My name is Iman Ahmed, and I am a junior high school student at Al Huda School in College
Park, Maryland. Rahma Zakaria, a classmate and close friend, introduced me to your work,
which I have taken a particular interest in.
I am writing to you to inquire about a possible summer internship under your instruction. While
aware that it is uncommon and unusual for high school students to intern with university
researchers, I write hoping you will make a few exceptions. Biology, chemistry, physics,
physiology and all others sciences are to me what flavors of cake are to a cake lover. It would
truly be my heart's desire to learn more about your work; I have no objection to keeping records,
filing papers, or just watching.
I cannot say that I am a 5- time winner of the state science fair or was President of the Science
Club (because our school has no clubs). Honestly, I have no extraordinary qualities or prodigious
skills, except for a pretty good GPA and an abnormal love of science and reading. I volunteered
at Twinbrook library every summer since I was 13, and am now a part of the Teen Advisory
Committee at MCPL (Montgomery County Public Libraries). If I could live there, I would.
Karate has been my second love ever since my first class when I was 12. Now, I am a third
degree blue belt in Tang Soo Do and Japanese Jujitsu and have placed in the 2013 United States
Eastern Regional Karate Championship for whatever that's worth. Finally, I have massive school
pride, so I fought and competed for my school since freshman year at the DC Muslim
Interscholastic Tournament, which is held annually at University of MD. Thankfully, our team
won first overall every year, but I never go to nationals because it's too far to travel.
I will await your reply with anticipation, God willing. I hope you seriously consider taking me
under you tutelage this summer, as you would any other student. I have attached my resume for
