Experiment#3:FLAME COLORS OF METAL
ACTIVITY#3

GOALS/PURPOSE
To observe the characteristic colors produced by certain metallic ions when vaporized in flame. To
identify unknown metallic ions by means of its flame test

MATERIALS * REAGENTS
Watch glasses, clean and dried
1 glass dropper
1 thin glass stir rod ( this glass is very fragile, so handle gently!)
100mL beaker containing methanol
Alchohol lamp
1 paper towel
Lab notebook
Pencil

PROCEDURE
1. Do Cleaning procedure for nichrome wire by dipping the end of the wire into concentraded HCI
and heating it in the Flames hottest region until there is no visivle color
2. 2. Repeat the cleaning procedure before dipping the nichrome wire into the different salt
solution
3. Dissolve a pinch of CaCL
2
crystal in 3-4 drops of distilled water contained in watch glass
4. Dip the pre-cleaned nichrome wire into the dissolved salt solution and heat it in the flame
hottest region. Observe the falme color produced
5. Repeat the same procedure for the other salt solution
6. Calculate the v(Hz). Wavelength(nm).and E(J).
