OVERCURRENT PROTECTIVE DEVICE COORDINATION STUDY


PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE
A. The contractor shall provide an engineering analysis and coordination study for the [entire
electrical system including existing equipment] [new portions of electrical distribution
system]. The basic analysis shall include a short-circuit analysis with protective device
evaluation a protective device coordination study. [n addition t!e study s!all include [a

!. The pro"ect shall begin at the point of utility service for the facility and continue down through
the syste# to all downstrea# distribution and branch panelboards #otor control centers and
significant #otor locations.
C. The pro"ect shall include any new generators and any associated e#ergency power distribution
e$uip#ent including auto#atic transfer switches and generator ground fault protection.

A. All studies shall be perfor#ed in accordance with the latest applicable -EEE and A+S-
standards.

A. Preparer 1ualifications/ 4ir# e0perienced in the analysis evaluation and coordination of
electrical distribution syste#s and si#ilar to the syste# for this pro"ect. 4ir# #ust have at a
#ini#u# a 6 year record of successful in-service perfor#ance.
!. The study shall be prepared in accordance with the latest edition of +ETA Std. ATS +4PA 9:!
the 2+ational Electrical Code3 A+S- C%3 +ational Electrical Safety Code3 and A+S-;-EEE
.uidelines as well as #anufacturer5s reco##endations.
C. Short-Circuit Analysis and Coordination Study shall be perfor#ed by a registered Professional
Engineer. Study shall be signed and sealed by the Engineer. The Engineer shall have a
#ini#u# of eight years e0perience in the analysis evaluation and coordination of electrical
distribution syste#s.
(. The fir# conducting the study shall have one #illion worth of Professional 'iability -nsurance in
addition to standard general insurance.

A. Syste#atically calculate fault currents based on the available fault current at the facility service
entrance. Study preparer shall obtain the available fault current fro# the local utility.
!. Short-circuit calculations shall be prepared by #eans of a digital co#puter utili@ing a
co##ercially available software pacAage. *otor contribution shall be incorporated in
deter#ining fault levels. &esults of short-circuit calculations shall be presented in tabular for#
and shall include #o#entary and interrupting fault values for three-phase and phase-to-ground
faults.
C. Analy@e the short-circuit currents by preparing a tabulation co#paring the fault levels to the
device interrupting ratings. -ndicate areas in which integrated;series ratings are utili@ed. The

A. Prepare coordination ti#e-current characteristic curves to deter#ine the re$uired settings;si@es
of the protective devices to #a0i#i@e selectivity. The utility upstrea# protective device feeding
the facility shall be #aintained as the upper li#it for coordination. These settings shall be
obtained by the preparer along with any other protective device setting re$uire#ents. The
coordination curves shall be prepared on log-log paper and illustrate ade$uate clearing ti#es
between series devices. The curves shall be created through the use of the study software

pacAage but #ust reflect actual protective devices to be installed. Ade$uate ti#e-current
curves shall be generated to depict coordination. -n addition protective device characteristics
shall be suitably deter#ined to reflect calculated short-circuit levels at the location.
!. A narrative analysis shall acco#pany each coordination curve sheet and describe the
coordination and protection in e0plicit detail. All curve sheets shall be #ulti-color for i#proved
clarity. Areas lacAing co#plete coordination shall be highlighted and reasons provided for
allowing condition to re#ain or provide solution to resolve situation. Syste# coordination
reco##ended ratings and setting of protective devices shall be acco#plished by a registered
professional electrical engineer with a #ini#u# of eight years of current e0perience in the
coordination of electrical power syste#s.

review and approval. Approved copies or the report shall be sub#itted to the (esign Engineer.

A. The contractor shall engage the #anufacturer5s service group or alternately a $ualified
independent testing fir# to perfor# field ad"ust#ents of the protective devices as re$uired for
placing the e$uip#ent in final operating condition. The settings shall be in accordance with the
approved short circuit study and protective device evaluation ; coordination study.
!. +ecessary field settings of devices and ad"ust#ents and #inor #odifications to e$uip#ent to
acco#plish confor#ance with the approved short-circuit and protective device coordination
study shall be carried out by #anufacturer5s service group.
